164.	JOHN, SON AND HEIR OF PETER MAUVEYSIN of Berewyk.
	Writ to the escheator to take the proof of age of the said John, 20 Feb. 31 Edw. I.
SALOP.	Proof of age made at Berewyk on Monday after St. Gregory the Pope, 31 Edw. I.
	Henry de Garmeston, aged 60, says that the said John was born at Astleye by Berewyk and baptized in the church of St. Mary there, 6 August, 9 Edw. I, and was 21 on that day last past; and this he knows because he had a daughter Anable who was born at the feast of All Saints in the same year; who is of that age. Walter de Burton, aged 50, says the like, and knows it because he had a godson (filiolum), Stephen de Felton, who married his daughter, who was born in the same year and in the present year proved his age before John de la Lee, of whom he holds his tenements. Richard Braz, aged 41, says the like, and knows it because in the same year he bought the tithes of corn of the church of Upton under Haghmon, and in returning through Astleye he heard that the said John was born. Henry del Ree, aged 45, says the like, and knows it because his father died in the preceding year. William Payn, aged 43, says the like, and knows it because in the following year he married his wife. Roger Fox, aged 52, says the like, and knows it because he had a son Reginald who was born in the same year. Roger de Neubolde, aged 70, says the like, and knows it because he had a daughter Alice who was born in the same year. Geoffrey de Morton, aged 47, says the like, and knows it because in that year he came to dwell with Sir Robert Corbet at Morton where he has stayed until now, and in coming through Astleye he heard that the said John was born. Hugh de Norton, aged 52, says the like, and knows it because he had a daughter Petronilla who was born in the same year. John Robylot, aged 44, says the like, and knows it because in the same year died his uncle, Godfrey the chaplain, whom he was serving. William the smith (faber), aged 52, says the like, and knows it because he had a daughter Edeline who was born two years after. John Russel of Donynton, aged 45, says the like and knows it because in that year he was with one Sir Thomas Botereal, who had a son John who died in the same year.

165.	RICHARD, SON AND HEIR OF HUGH LE HERYZ.
	Writ to the escheator to take the proof of age of the said Richard, whose lands &c. are in the wardship of Richard le Casteleyn by the demise of the executors of Edmund sometime earl of Cornwall, to whom the king committed the same, 9 April, 31 Edw. I.
NOTTINGHAM.	Proof of age made at Notingham, 15 July, 31 Edw. I.
	William Torkard of Chilewelle, aged 45, says that the said Richard was born at Stapelford, in his father’s house, on the day of Holy Trinity, 10 Edw. I, and on the morrow was baptized in the baptistery of the church there, and brother Richard de Normanton, abbot of La Dale, brother William de Jorz, friar of the order of preachers, and Helen (Elena) who was the wife of Benedict de Stapelford lifted him from the sacred font; and this he recollects because for three years before the said birth he was of the household (familiaris) of Hugh the father, and in the last year in which he served the said Richard was born, and at the feast of St. Michael following he withdrew from that service; and in that year the king was in the war of Wales, and Llewellyn sometime prince of Wales was taken and slain after the feast of St. Martin, 21 years ago immediately after that feast next to come. Robert le Macon of Stapelford, aged 50, says the like and recollects because on the day of the Ascension Joan mother of the said Richard, then pregnant with him, lifted his daughter from the sacred font, and called her by her own name, 21 years ago. Geoffrey son of Ralph of Stapelford, aged 46, agrees, and recollects because one Richard son of Beatrice, who married witness’s mother, and held two bovates of land in Stapelford of his inheritance by the courtesy of England, died on the morrow of the Ascension before the said Richard’s birth, and on the day of the said birth he did fealty to his lord the prior of Newstead (de Novo loco) for the said land, 21 years ago at the feast of Holy Trinity last. Robert Aubrey of Stapelford, aged 45, agrees, and well recollects because Avice his mother died on the day of St. Thomas the Martyr at Christmas following, 21 years ago at Christmas next. Nicholas son of Richard of Stapelford, aged 50, agrees, and recollects because he went with Geoffrey de Stapelford, knight, his lord, to the war in Wales at the feast of St. Michael after the said Richard’s birth, 20 years ago at the said feast last past, and in the following year Llewelyn prince of Wales and David his brother were taken and slain. Simon de Breydeston, aged 55, agrees, and recollects because he demised two bovates of land in Breydeston to one Nicholas de Breydeston, at the feast of St. Michael following the said Richard’s birth for 20 years, which land nearly a year ago came to his hands by lapse of the term. Roger de Mamecestre, aged 50, agrees, and recollects because he was impleaded by one Henry Balcock at Lincoln before the justices in their last eyre by a writ of trespass, immediately after Holy Trinity, 21 years ago. Elias Torkard in Hukenhale, aged 60, agrees, and recollects because on the day of the Nativity of the Blessed Mary next after the said Richard’s birth he married one Alice, daughter of Geoffrey de Heriz of Stapelford, 21 years ago from the said feast next to come. William Torkard in Boneye, aged 50, agrees, and recollects because in Whitsun week before the said Richard’s birth, Margery his wife taken with great weakness bore a son scarcely 6 thumbs in length, who nevertheless lived until he was baptized and then died. Robert son of Gervase of Stapelford, aged 60, agrees, and recollects because Avice his wife died at Stapelford in Easter Week before the said Richard’s birth, 21 years ago last Easter, and he married Margery now his wife in Whitsun week in the following year. John de Breydeston in Stapelford, aged 55, agrees, and recollects because he married Felicia his wife on Wednesday in Whitsun week (next) before the said Richard was born. John son of John of Stapelford, aged 41, agrees, and recollects because John his father was in the war of Wales with Sir Peter de la Mare and was drowned with his lord and many others, as well knights as others, in the water of Conewey on the day of St. Leonard next after the said Richard’s birth 21 years ago.

	Weststaford. A capital messuage &c. 80a. arable, 6a. meadow, a common pasture, 7s. rent of two free tenants (named), 18s. 11d. rent of customers and cottars, and 2s. pleas &c. of court, held of the king in chief by service of 1/2 knight’s fee as of the manor of Weye Bayose, which manor the king acquired of the heirs of Stephen de Bayose, and rendering 6d. yearly at the same manor. Richard, son of Robert de Bingham, the younger, also deceased, aged 22 and more, is grandson (?) (nepos) and next heir of the aforesaid Robert.

	Wulcome Bingham. The manor (extent given), including a fish pond, held of Hugh Puynz for 1/3 knight’s fee, pertaining to the said Hugh’s barony of Cury Malet, and rendering to him 12d. and 1lb. cummin yearly. Heir as above.

The manor (extent given) with the advowson of the church held of the abbot of Waltham Holy Cross by service of 1/4 knight’s fee; and there are due 10l. yearly to the said abbot and 1/2 mark for suit at the king’s court of the honour of Boulogne, and for another tenement to the said abbot at his manor of Nettleswell 18d., 1/2lb. pepper and 1lb. cummin. Coppedehalle. A manor called ‘La Coppedehall’ (extent given), including a park of 60a., and 60a. of ‘Poeres Lond,’ held of the said abbot by homage; and 18s. 4d. are due to the said abbot (yearly). Shingledehalle. A manor called ‘La Shingledehall’ (extent given) held of the said abbot by homage; and there are due (yearly) 8s. 10d. to William le Madle, 2s. to Robert de Heyle, 4s. to John atte church (de ecclesia), and 4d. to John le Graunt. Waltham. The office of forester of the king’s forest of Waltham held of the king in chief by grand serjeanty, viz.—being forester of that forest. Heir as above, aged 24 and more.

The manor (extent given), including a third part of the market whereof the earl of Gloucester takes two parts, and certain amercements for breaking the assise of ale whereof a moiety pertains to the manor and the other moiety to the abbot of St. Edmund’s hundred of Ryssebreg, held of the king in chief by service of 1/2 knight’s fee; and 17s. 4d. assised rent whereof the said Henry and Alice his wife were enfeoffed jointly by their own acquisition. Henry his son, aged 3 at Christmas day next, is his next heir.

	Little Badewe. The manor (extent given) held jointly with Joan his wife of the heir of Philip Burnel, a minor and in the king’s wardship, by service of 6d. yearly. Terlyngg. A manor (extent given) held jointly with the said Joan, by the gift of Nicholas le Gras who enfeoffed them thereof together with the aforesaid manor of Little Badewe, to hold to them and the heirs of their bodies of the bishop of Norwich by service of a knight’s fee; and the said Joan had seisin until the day of the said Roger’s death. Nicholas le Gras his brother, aged 25 and more, is his next heir.
SURREY.	Inq. 28 Nov. 32 Edw. I.
	Littleton. The manor (extent given) held of John de Cobeham by service of entertaining him and acquitting his expenses for food and drink on his coming there with 5 horses twice a year, viz.—for two days and two nights, for all service. Yrtyndon. A virgate of land held of Henry de Guldeford by service of rendering 2s. 8d. yearly; and 4a. arable held of Andrew de Brayboef by service of rendering a clove (clavam galiofiri) yearly; and 12a. arable held of the heirs of Hamo de Gatton, rendering 10s. yearly at fee farm. Cheddyngefold. A virgate of arable land held of Robert le Dol by service of 1/12 knight’s fee. Heir as above, aged 22 and more.

ESSEX.	Inq. taken at Chelmersford, 8 Jan. 32 Edw. I.
	Little Badewe. The manor (extent given) held jointly with Joan his wife, by the gift of Nicholas le Gras, brother and heir of the said Roger, to hold to them and the heirs of their bodies, of the heir of Philip Burnel, a minor and in the king’s wardship; and Maud Burnel is dowered of the manor of Borham, of which the manor of Little Badewe is held, by service of 6d. yearly. Terlyngg. The manor (extent given) similarly held of the bishop of Norwich by service of a knight’s fee. Heir as first above.
	Writ of plenius certiorari, because the aforesaid Nicholas asserts that the said Joan was not enfeoffed jointly with her husband as stated in the above inquisitions, and that the sub-escheator at the taking of those inquisitions refused to accept his reasons and claims, and the said Joan has not come to seek her right, if she has any, and it appears that Ralph de Gras, ancestor of the said Roger was in the wardship of R. Bishop of Bath and Wells ancestor (sic) of the said Philip Burnel, by reason of the aforesaid lands &c.; the escheator is commanded to make enquiry &c. in the presence of the said Nicholas and Joan; 30 Jan. 32 Edw. I.
ESSEX.	Inq. made at Stratford in the presence of both parties, 16 March, 32 Edw. I.
	Roger le Gras on the day of the Nativity of the Blessed Mary, 30 Edw. I, enfeoffed Nicholas le Gras, his brother, of the manor of Badewe and lands &c. in Terlyng, who peacefully continued his seisin until the feast of St. Luke following, when by his charter he enfeoffed the said Roger and Joan his wife of the same, to hold to them and the heirs of their bodies, so that if the said Roger should die without such heir the said Joan should hold the same for her life, with remainder to the right heirs of the said Roger. The said Roger and Joan continued their seisin until Thursday after St. Michael following when the said Roger died. The manor of Little Badewe is held of the heir of Philip Burnel, a minor and in the king’s wardship, as of the manor of Borham by service of 6d. yearly; and the lands &c. in Terlyng are held of the bishop of Norwich by service of a knight’s fee.

LINCOLN.	Inq. Wednesday after St. Nicholas, 32 Edw. I.
	Cokewold. A manor (extent given) held of the king in chief by serjeanty and by service of finding a footman with a pike (cum una hach’ ad pyk) with the king in war in Wales for forty days at his own charges, and by service of 5s. to be paid to John Dalison. John his son, aged 12 and more, is his next heir.
LINCOLN.	Inq. Wednesday after St. Andrew, 32 Edw. I.
	Saleby. The manor (extent given), including a moiety of the tolls of Alford, held jointly with Juliana his wife, by the gift &c. of Eustace de Hacche to them and the heirs of their bodies by a fine made in the king’s court, of the heir of Walter Pedewardin by service of a knight’s fee; a bovate of land aforesaid (sic), save a sixth part, held by the said William and Juliana of William de Strubbi by service of 20d. yearly; and they rendered 10s. yearly to the prior of Sixil for a certain tenement aforesaid (sic) in Strubbi. Heir as above.
LINCOLN.	Inq. taken at Roulle on Wednesday before St. Lucy, 32 Edw. I. (defaced).
	Kellesey. The manor (extent given) held jointly as abovesaid by similar fine, of the mother church of Lincoln by service of 20s. yearly. Suth Kell(esey) and North Kell(esey). Two bovates of land pertaining to the manor aforesaid similarly held by the service aforesaid, and paying besides 16d. yearly to the bailiffs of the king’s soke of Thwangcastre. Heir as above.
WARWICK.	Inq. 2 Jan. 32 Edw. I.
	Hardeshull. The manor (full extent given with names of tenants), including a mill called Panckemilne, held of Ralph de Sapecote by service of a knight’s fee. Heir as above, aged 10 at the feast of St. Michael, 31 Edw. I.
	Extent or summary of the lands &c. taken into the king’s hand, viz. the abovesaid manors of Cokewolde and Hardredeshull, divided into a third part and two parts.

	La Schute. A decayed (debilis) hall and ox-house with garden &c., 20a. arable, 10a. pasture, 1 1/4a. meadow, a water-mill, a broken fulling-mill, and 8 free tenants rendering 13s. 4d. yearly, held of John de Oskereswell by service of 1/4 knight’s fee. He held nothing of the heir of William de Insula, a minor and in the king’s wardship. Robert his son, aged 5 1/2 years, is his next heir.

DORSET.	Inq. made at Dorcestre, 23 Jan. 34 Edw. I.
	Sturmenistre Marshal. A seventh part of the manor (extent given) held for life, of the grant of Eleanor sometime countess of Winchester deceased, of the king in chief in free socage by service of finding a seventh part of four men and of a tithing-man (decenarii) at the sheriff’s turn twice a year, for the whole manor shall find the said four men &c. The said Eleanor’s nieces Cecily de Bello Campo and Joan de Vivonia her sister, her nephews James de Bohun and John de Mohun, her sister Agatha de Mortuo Mari, and her kinsman Aymer de Archiaco, each aged 21 and more, are her next heirs.
	Writ to the escheator to enquire whether Sibyl the wife of Guy de Rupe Cawardi is a niece and one of the coheirs of the said Eleanor, as the king is given to understand, or not, 9 March, 34 Edw. I.

	The said Sibyl, aged 30 and more, is a niece of the said Eleanor, and coheir of the aforesaid Joan, Cecily, John, James, Agatha and Aymer.

SALOP.	Inq. Tuesday after the Assumption, 31 Edw. I.
	Hauerekercote alias Hauekercote. The hamlet held of the king in chief by service of finding a footman with a bow, two arrows and a bolt (uno bujone) in the king’s army if there shall be war between the king and the prince of Wales, who, seeing the king’s enemies, shall shoot his two arrows at them and then return to his own country unless the king wishes to retain him further at wages.

183.	ROGER, FATHER OF EDMUND DE MORTUO MARI, AND MAUD HIS MOTHER.
	Writ to the escheator to enquire what lands &c. the said Roger and Maud held, to be returned at the exchequer at York on the morrow of St. Michael at the escheator’s peril for default. Witness, P. de Wylughby, deputy of the treasurer, 5 June, 31 Edw. I.
HEREFORD &c.	Inq. made at Hereford on Thursday the feast of the Decollation of St. John the Baptist, 31 Edw. I.
	Wygemore. The castle and manor on the borders of co. Hereford, with its members, viz.—Leynthales Stalkare, Leynthale Earl’s, and Orleton, were held by Roger de Mortuo Mari, the said Edmund’s father, of the king in chief by a whole barony by service of 2 knights in Wales in time of war, and 1 knight in England in time of war. Radenore. The castle and manor on the borders of the said county, with its members, viz.—Kyngeslone, Erslone and Penebrugge, were held by Maud de Mortuo Mari, the said Edmund’s mother, of the king in chief for a fourth part of a barony, owing the service of 1 knight in time of war in Wales.
GLOUCESTER.	Inq. taken at Gloucester, 4 August, 31 Edw. I.
	The said Roger held nothing in the county except of the inheritance of Maud his wife. Aure in the hundred of Blydeslouwe. A messuage, 21 1/2a. arable, 4a. meadow, 2a. pasture, a pasture upon Auresand not measured, a fishery in the river Sevare, 21s. 2d. assised rent of 8 free tenants, 33s. 2d. rent of villains and cottars, and a moiety of the hundred whereof the pleas &c. are worth 60s. yearly, were held by the said Maud, mother of Edmund de Mortuo Mari, of the king in chief by homage.
GLOUCESTER.	Inq. taken at Cyrenc(estre), 12 Sept. 31 Edw. I.
	Herlingthon in the Liberty of Cyrenc(estre). Six virgates of arable land. Chyriton. 6a. arable. Hamptonet. Half a virgate of land. All held by the said Maud of the king in chief as parcel of the barony of Radenore.
SALOP.	Inq. Wednesday after the Assumption, 31 Edw. I.
	Clebur(y) Mortimer and Cheylmerch. The manor with its members, viz.—Ernewode and Huggeley were held by the said Roger of the king in chief by serjeanty, by reason of the lands &c. which were of Roger de Bedleem, sometime earl of Salop, now in the king’s hands, owing the service of being steward of the said earl’s lands throughout the whole of the county of Salop and being keeper of the castle of Bridgnorth (Bruges). Leyntwardyn. The manor, a member of the barony of Wiggemor, was held by the said Roger of the king in chief, service unknown, because the barony is in co. Hereford. The said Roger held no other lands &c. in the county. Maud, mother of the said Edmund, held no lands in the county, except in dower for a third part of the manor of Cleybur(y) and Cheilmerch.
SOMERSET.	Inq. 26 August, 31 Edw. I.
	The said Roger held no lands of the king in chief in the county. Bridgwater. The castle with a third part of the town, was held by the said Maud of her own inheritance of the king in chief, together with two parts of the manor of Odecomb by service of 1/3 knight’s fee, as the jurors understand.

184.	JULIANA DE WROKESHALE, AND JOHN DE HADDON AND ANASTASIA HIS WIFE.
	Writ (ad melius inquirendum) to the escheator; whereas in the inquisitions made concerning the lands &c. held as well by the said Juliana and Wenthlian late the wife of Eustace her son, as by the said John and Anastasia, it is contained that the said Juliana held nothing of the king in chief, but that the said Wenthlian held in dower certain lands &c. in Estbury of the king by knight’s service of the inheritance of the said Juliana; and that John son of Henry de Cerne, John son of Richard de Brokenebergh, Henry son of the aforesaid John and Anastasia, and Margery sister of the said Eustace, are next heirs of the said Juliana; and that Henry son of the said John and Anastasia is their next heir; nevertheless the king is given to understand that as well the said Juliana as the said John held lands &c. of the king and others of the inheritance of the aforesaid Juliana and Anastasia; he is therefore commanded to enquire into whose hands the lands of the said Juliana have come &c., what lands &c. the said John held of his own inheritance and of the inheritance of the said Anastasia, who is the next heir &c., and which of the said Juliana, John, and Anastasia died first, &c. 28 Jan. 31 Edw. I.
BERKS.	Inq. Friday the feast of St. Peter in Cathedra, 31 Edw. I.
	Estbury. A moiety of the manor (extent given) was held by the said Juliana of her own inheritance of the king in chief, by homage and service of 1/4 knight’s fee, and finding the king in his army in Wales and in England if there shall be war, a man and a barded horse, together with Joan, Amice, Anastasia, Alice and Agnes, daughters and heirs of John de Marisco, who hold the other moiety of the manor as of their pourparty of the inheritance, so that the heirs of the said Juliana and of John de Marisco shall do the service of 1/2 knight’s fee together for forty days at their own costs. Wenthlian, sometime the wife of Eustace son of the said Juliana, after the death of the said Eustace who died without heir of himself in his mother’s lifetime, on the day of the said Juliana’s death held the lordship of the said moiety of her in dower, by the assignment of the said Eustace, who dowered her at the church door, with the said Juliana’s assent, on the day he married her; so that after the said Juliana’s death the right of the said moiety descended, with other her lands &c. in other counties, to Joan, Rose, Anastasia, and Margery her daughters, the lordship of that moiety nevertheless remaining in the hands of the said Wenthlian. But in process of time she died, and the lordship with the right wholly reverted to the four daughters of the said Juliana, then married, viz.—Joan the eldest to John de Cerne, Rose to Richard de Brokenebergh, Anastasia to John de Haddon, and Margery to Geoffrey de Mohun, and that moiety was taken into the king’s hand as held of him in chief. John de Haddon held nothing in the county on the day he died except the right of the said moiety, which remained in the said Anastasia; but he held other lands in cos. Gloucester, Northampton and Dorset, as well of his own inheritance as of that of the said Anastasia, but how much and of whom is unknown to the jury. The said Juliana died about the feast of St. Michael, 11 Edw. 1, the said Wenthlian on the feast of the Assumption, 29 Edw. I, the said Anastasia within a month after the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 30 Edw. I, and the said John de Haddon on the third day after Anastasia his wife; and there is a watermill there held of Robert de la Ryvere in socage, rendering 20d. yearly for a moiety of the same. John, son of John de Cerne and of Joan his wife deceased, of full age, John, son of Richard de Brokenebergh and of Rose his wife deceased, of full age, Henry, son of John de Haddon and of Anastasia his wife deceased, aged 18, and Margery the wife of Geoffrey de Mohun, still surviving aged 40, are next heirs of the said Juliana; and the said Henry is next heir of the said John de Haddon and Anastasia.
DORSET.	Inq. made at Schyreburn, 27 Feb. 31 Edw. I (defaced).
	The said Juliana held no lands of the king in chief in the county. Ludelynch. A messuage &c., 86a. arable, 12a. meadow, a several pasture, 10a. wood, 5s. rent of free tenants (named), 27s. 1d. rents of customers, and 2s. pleas &c., were held by the said John de Haddon of Roger de Plumber by knight’s service, rendering 13d. yearly. Caundel Haddon. 1/4 knight’s fee, viz.—a capital messuage &c., 46a. arable, 4a. meadow, common pasture, 2a. wood, 1/2 water-mill, 2 free tenants (named), and customers, held by the same John of Robert Maleherb and his heirs, rendering a gillyflower yearly. (Caundel Haddon.) A messuage &c., 40a. arable, 2a. meadow, and rents of free tenants and customers, held of Oliver de Punchardon in socage, rendering a pair of gilt spurs yearly or 6d.; 1/2 knight’s fee (extent given) held of John Mautravers; 20a. arable, and 8s. 4d. rents and works of customers, held of John le Warener for 1/20 knight’s fee, rendering 6d. yearly; 12a. meadow and a pasture, held of John Mautravers in free marriage; 4a. arable, 1a. meadow and a tenant rendering 2s. held of Walter de Percy by knight’s service, rendering 3s. yearly; 72a. arable, 9a. meadow, a several pasture, 10a. wood, a water-mill, 4s. 1d. rents of free tenants, and 6s. 8d. rent of customers, held of the abbot of Shyreburn in socage rendering 13s. 4d. yearly, and suit at the court of Stapelbrygg. The said John de Haddon and Anastasia his wife, held certain lands &c. of her inheritance, at Wynterburn, co. Gloucester, service unknown; and a moiety of the manor of Estbury, co. Berks, after the death of one Wenthlian who held it in dower of the heirs of the said Anastasia and other her coheirs of the inheritance of Juliana de Wrokesale, reverted to the same John and Anastasia before their deaths: Henry de Haddon their son, aged 20 and more, is their next heir. The said Juliana died first, then Wenthlian, Anastasia died on Wednesday before St. John the Baptist, 30 Edw. I, and the said John on the Friday following.
GLOUCESTER.	Inq. made at Winterburne on Monday after Palm Sunday, 31 Edw. I.
	Wenthlian, the wife of Eustace son of Juliana de Wrock(eshale), held in dower a moiety of the manor of Estbury, co. Berks, of the inheritance of the said Juliana, whereof the right and fee remained in the said Juliana, who held it of the king in chief, service unknown. Winterburne. A moiety of the manor (extent given) was held by the said Juliana of Sir Gilbert son of Stephen by service of 1/4 knight’s fee. And after her death her inheritance descended to her four daughters abovesaid, who entered upon the said manor (sic) and parted it between them, and the abovesaid John and Anastasia on the day of their deaths held the pourparty of the said Anastasia (extent given) of the said Gilbert son of Stephen by service 1/16 knight’s fee. Heir as last above. The said Juliana died twenty years before the others; the said Wenthlian a year before the said John and Anastasia; and Anastasia two days before John.
