95. ELEANOR, LATE THE WIFE OF HERBERT FIZ JOHAN or LE FIZ JOHAN.
Letters patent to John de Annesleye and Robert de Aston, to examine into the petition of the said Eleanor, claiming her dower out of the under-mentioned manors and lands, &c. in cos. Gloucester and Berks and in Wales, 22 February, 1 Edward III.

GLOUCESTER. Inq. Wednesday before St. Gregory the Pope, 1 Edward III.
Herbert le fiz Johan, on Sunday next after St. Mark the Evangelist, 19 Edward I., on which day he espoused the said Eleanor at Harescombe, dowered her with the assent of his father, John le fiz Reynaud, at the door of the church of Harescombe of a third part of the manors of Barndesleye [or Bardesleye], co. Gloucester, and Crokham, co. Berks, with a third part of the castle of Blenleveny, with the honour of the castle of Bulkedynas, Talkard [or Talgart], Langellon, Kethedyn, and La Mare, in Wales, and the said John le fiz Reynaud, in consideration of 300l. which he received from Sir Roger le Rous, father of the said Eleanor, confirmed the said grant of dowery. And, after the deaths of the said John and Herbert, she was never seised of any part of the said manors, and never quit-claimed her right to the said dower to Hugh le Despenser, the elder, nor to any other lord of the manor of Barndesleye. The said Herbert died on the morrow of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 14 Edward II., and the said manor is in the king’s hand, by reason of the forfeiture of the said Hugh le Despenser, the elder, and it was held of the king in chief by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee.

Richard Tuchet, his brother, aged 45 years and more, is his next heir.

Welles. The manor, of which he was jointly seised with Ellen de Denarston, who now holds it for her life, held of Robert de Kendale by service of a knight’s fee.

Burreth. The manor (extent given), held of Allesia de Lacy, countess of Lincoln and Salisbury, and of the bishop of Lincoln, by service of a third part of a knight’s fee. And there are yearly paid to the sheriff of Lincoln 6s. 8d., and to Richard Tutchet for life 100s.
Sutherey. A messuage, 2 1/2 bovates land and 12s. rent which Alice, late the wife of Nicholas Tutchet, his father, held and still holds in dower with reversion to the right heirs of the said William, held of the prior of Bolington by service of 2s. yearly for all service.

Berkeleye. The castle (extent given) and hundred, with courts and leets.
Hamme. The manor (extent given), including a park with deer.
Camme. The manor (extent given).
Wotton. The manor (extent given), including a park with deer and a water-mill.
Radeclyvestret. 100s. rent and a hundred, with two leets and a court.
All held with their hamlets and with other lands late of the said Maurice de Berkeleye, in Somerset, of the king in chief by barony, doing service of three knights’ fees.
Upton by Gloucester. Two messuages and two virgates of land (extent given), whereof one messuage and one virgate are held of the king in chief by serjeanty, viz.—by finding at his own charges an archer for forty days in the king’s army within the four seas; and the other messuage and virgate are held of the king in chief by service of 20s. yearly.
The late King Edward II. holding the said Maurice as contrary to Hugh le Despenser, the younger, and a rebel, seized the said castle, hundreds, manors, lands, &c. into his hand in his 15th year, and kept the said Maurice in his prison at Wallingford, where he died.
Thomas, his son, aged 30 years and more, is his next heir.

99. HELEWISIA, LATE THE WIFE OF THOMAS DE BARKEBY.
Writ to the escheator, 6 May, 1 Edward III.
Whereas Ralph Basset of Drayton by fine levied in the king’s court, 6 Edward II., granted that a third part of the manor of Radeclyve-upon-Sore, which Thomas de Barkeby and Helewysia his wife held as her dower of the inheritance of the said Ralph; and which after her death ought to revert to the said Ralph and his heirs, should after her death remain to Peter Pycot and Joan his wife to hold for their lives, together with two parts of the same manor, of the said Ralph and his heirs, to whom the manor should wholly revert on the death of the said Peter and Joan, and the said Thomas and Helewysia afterwards did fealty to the said Joan for the same; and whereas now on behalf of John de Langeton and the said Joan, now his wife, it has been shown that although, after the death of the said Helewysia, they entered upon the said third part of the manor, and held the same for some time, the escheator, pretending that the same Helewysia was seized on the day she died of the said third part in her demesne as of fee, and that she held the same of the king in chief, removed the said John and Joan from the said third part and took it into the king’s hand; the king commands him to make further enquiry what estate the said Helewysia had therein, &c.
NOTTINGHAM. Inq. Wednesday after St. John ante Portam Latinam, 1 Edw. III.
Radeclive-upon-Sore or Radeclive. The said Helewisia held a third part of the manor in dower by the late king’s assignment, after the death of John Pygot, sometime her husband, and in her lifetime she did not change her estate therein. Joan, late the wife of Peter Pigot, did not change her estate in the said third part by any fine levied by Ralph Basset of Drayton. The said third part, together with two parts of the manor, is held of the king in chief by service of keeping a goshawk (hostorium) yearly for the king, at the king’s expense, for all service.

100. AYMER DE VALENCIA, EARL OF PEMBROKE.
Writ of certiorari, 12 February, 1 Edward III.
Whereas by an inquisition lately made after the death of the said Aymer, it was found that he was seised in fee of a messuage in Suthwerk, which is not held of the king, and whereas Walter de Huntyngfeld has asserted that Agnes de Valence, lady of Offaillye and Bailliol, granted the said messuage to him and his heirs, and that the said earl had no estate therein, save at the will of the said Walter, and has prayed for restitution of the said messuage, which is in the king’s hand by reason of the minority of Laurence, son of John de Hastynges, kinsman and one of the heirs of the said earl; the escheator is commanded to make inquisition concerning the premises.
SURREY. Inq. 15 February, 1 Edward III.
Suthwerk. The said Agnes de Valence on the eve of Holy Trinity, 27 Edward I., granted to Walter de Huntyngfeld a messuage in Suthwerk to hold to him and his heirs, by virtue of which grant the said Walter was seised thereof, and never changed his estate in the same. Aymer de Valencia had no estate therein, save only at the will of the said Walter, and that only for the said earl’s sojourn there.

101. ALICE, LATE THE WIFE OF WILLIAM DE OSEBURN, of York.
Writ of certiorari to Henry le Scrope and Adam de Hoperton, on the petition of the said Alice for her dower out of a messuage in York which the said William granted to the late king, 13 June, 1 Edward III.
Writ of venire facias to the sheriff of York, 13 June, 1 Edward III.
YORK. Inq. Thursday the morrow of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 1 Edward III.
York. The said William de Useburn was seised in his demesne as of fee of a messuage there after he married the said Alice, out of which she ought to be dowered. The said William granted the said messuage to the late King Edward (II.), to hold to him and his heirs for ever, and it is now in the king’s hand. The said Alice never quit-claimed her right to that dower, and never was dowered out of the said messuage or elsewhere, for the said William had no other tenement in fee. The messuage is charged with 9s. yearly to Juliana de Sancto Oswaldo, and John de Queldrik, chaplain, for ever.
Edmund le Maryner, keeper of the messuage for the king, had nothing to say why she should not be dowered thereof.

He held no lands &c. in his demesne as of fee of the king in the county on the day he died, but a fine was leved in the king’s court on the octave of St. Hilary, 10 Edward II., between Bartholomew de Greneville and Amy his wife, plaintiffs, and Margery, late the wife of Joyce (Jocei) de Dynham, deforciant, of the manor of Kylkampton, a messuage and certain lands, wood and rent excepted, to hold to the said Bartholomew and Amy for their lives, with remainder wholly to Henry, son of the said Bartholomew, and the heirs of his body. After the death of his father, the said Henry released to the said Amy, for her life, all manner of actions and demands which he had in the messuage and lands &c. above excepted, receiving yearly from the said Amy for her life 20l. dry rent.
The said manor of Kilkampton, together with the manor of Bydyforde, Bydeforde [or Bedford], co. Devon, now in the hand of the said Amy by fine as abovesaid, is held of the earl of Gloucester, as of the honour of Wynkelegh, now in the king’s hand by the forfeiture of Hugh le Despenser, the younger, by service of a knight’s fee.
Theobald, his son, aged 4 years at Whitsunday last, is his next heir.
Writ of plenius certiorari, the king being given to understand that the said Henry held divers lands &c. of which no mention is made in the above inquisition, 29 January, 3 Edward III.
DEVON [rectius SOMERSET]. Inq. taken at Honeton, 12 March, 3 Edward III.
Wemedon. The manor, held of John, son of John de Carreu, by service of a knight’s fee, doing suit at the court of the said John in Oteri Moon every three weeks; of which manor the said John de Carreu was seised as of wardship, by reason of the minority of Theobald, son and heir of the same Henry de Grenvill.
SOMERSET. Inq. taken at Brugewater, 6 April, 3 Edward III.
Wemedone. The manor, held of John, son of John de Careu, by service of a knight’s fee, and of doing suit at the said John’s court of Otrymoun every three weeks; of which manor the said John de Carreu was seised as of wardship, by reason of the minority of Theobald, son and heir of the same Henry de Grenevylle. He held no lands &c. of the king in chief in the county.

103. JOHN, SON OF CECILY SOMETIME THE WIFE OF RICHARD DE BERE.
Writ of plenius certiorari, 23 January, 1 Edward III.
On the complaint of Roesia daughter of the said Cecily, that whereas James de Bourne, by a fine levied before the justices of the Bench, 19 Edward I., granted to the said Richard and Cecily a moiety of the manor of Bysshopeston and the advowson of the church of the said town, for their lives, with remainder to John, son of the said Cecily, and the heirs of his body, with successive remainders in tail to Nicholas and William, his brothers, and to the said Roesia; and whereas the said Richard and Cecily, and the said John, Nicholas and William, died without heirs of their bodies, wherefore the said moiety and advowson by the said fine ought to go to the said Roesia and the heirs of her body; after the death of the said John the king’s escheator took the said moiety and advowson into the king’s hand, as if they had been held of the king in chief, where they still remain.
HEREFORD. Inq. 30 March, 2 Edward III.
Bisshopeston. The said Richard and Cecily his wife and John her son were seised, by virtue of the fine above-mentioned, of a moiety of the manor and of the advowson of the church; and the said Richard and Cecily deceased, and the said John, Nicholas, and William, sons of the said Cecily, died without heirs of their bodies; so that the said moiety and advowson ought to remain to the said Roesia and the heirs of her body. Neither the said Richard and Cecily, nor the said John, Nicholas, or William, or any of them, granted their estate in the above to any one. The said moiety and advowson are not held of the king in chief, but of the bishop of Hereford, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee.

104. BARTHOLOMEW DE BADELESMERE.
Petition of Margaret, late the wife of Sir Bartholomew de Badelesmere, to the king and council, that she may, by the goodwill of the king and queen, enter upon and enjoy her castle of Ledes, as her rightful acquisition with her lord, in exchange for the manor of Adderle; and, if it please not the king and queen that she should have the castle of Ledes, that they give order that she may have again the said manor of Adderle, with the advowson of the church thereto belonging. Endorsed:—“It seems to the council that she ought to have the one or the other; and, because the castle of Ledes is in the hand of the queen, she must be consulted (il fait a parler a la Roigne). Later, on the 27th day of February, Sir William de Clynton announced that the will of the queen is that the said Margaret should have the manor of Adderle; and, to that end, let this petition be delivered into the chancery, and let her have her charter.” (French.)

Aderdeleye. Margaret, late the wife of Bartholomew de Badlesmere, deceased, was enfeoffed jointly with her said husband and his heirs of the said manor and the advowson of the church there, by William de Monteforti, knight, in 5 Edward II.; and they continued their seisin for three years, until the said Bartholomew gave the manor and advowson to King Edward II., in exchange for the castle of Ledes, co. Kent. The aforesaid manor is held of the king in chief, by service of half a knight’s fee.

Badelesmere. The manor with the advowson of the church, held of King Edward II., in chief, by service of rendering every twenty-four weeks yearly 6s. 8d. for the ward of the castle of Dover; many parcels of land, which were formerly extended as parcels of the said manor in the time of the said king, are in the hand of Margaret, late the wife of the said Bartholomew, because she was enfeoffed jointly with him in the same; and 40a. land called ‘Coteslonde,’ were held by the said Bartholomew of the king in chief, by service of rendering every twenty weeks yearly 2s. 4d. for the ward of the castle of Dover.
Sheldwyche. A messuage, 3a. land, 2a. wood and 4s. rent, held of the abbot of Fevresham, by service of 30s. yearly.
Le Bleen. A messuage, land and rent, held of the queen of England, by service of 13s. 4d. yearly at her manor of Osprynge, and further, by rendering to the heirs of Richard de Rokesle, lord of Westwode, 2s., 11 hens and a cock yearly, at Christmas, at his said manor of Westwode, and by rendering to Margaret de Badelesmere 18 3/4d., 2 hens and a moiety of a hen, yearly at Christmas, at the manor of Whitstaple, and to Robert de Bleen 6d. yearly.
Sheldwyche and Sellyngge or Shellynge, viz.—in a field called Malemeynesfelde. A toft, 150a. land and a wind-mill, held jointly with Margaret his wife and the heirs of the said Bartholomew, of the abbot of Fevresham, by service of 20s. yearly at the said abbot’s manor of Fevresham, and also of rendering to the heirs of Richard de Rokesle 10s. yearly; and 10a. land and 5s. yearly rent held jointly as above of the abbot of Fevresham, by service of 6d. yearly to the aforesaid abbot and convent.
Badelesmere. 2a. land and a rood of wood in the park there, held jointly as above of the king in chief, as of the castle of Dover, by service of 1/4d. yearly, to be paid at the said castle at Michaelmas.
Trulegh, Osprynge, and Westwelle. A messuage, 150a. land, 18a. wood, 40s. rent, and also a rent of 6qr. barley, 36 hens, and 120 eggs, held jointly as above of the Roman Church, by service of 18d. Rome-scot yearly.
Cheleham. Land (extent given), and two water-mills called Abbodesmulle, held jointly with Margaret his wife, by divers purchases from several persons, of the king in chief, by rendering 6d. yearly at Michaelmas at the castle of Dover.
Chilham, Whitstapel, Kyngestone, and Hathfelde. The castle and manors and 70s. of yearly rent in Dover, held, by the grant of King Edward II., (fn. 1) jointly with Margaret his wife, to them and the heirs of the said Bartholomew. The said castle and manor of Chilham, Whitstaple, Kyngeston, and Rydelyngwelde, are held of the king in chief, by service of rendering at the castle of Dover:—for the castle and manors of Chilham, Whitstaple, and Rydelyngewelde, and for the rent aforesaid, every twenty-four weeks yearly, 10s.; and, for the manor of Kyngestone, every twenty weeks, 5s. The manor of Hathfelde is held of the Archbishop of Canterbury by serjeanty, viz.—by service of attending upon him with water to wash his hands, on the day of his enthronement at Canterbury; and he shall have the ewer and basin, and shall also be the chamberlain of the aforesaid Archbishop for the night, and shall have the Archbishop’s couch for his fee.
Chetham. A messuage and a carucate of land called ‘Snodhurst,’ held of the king in chief, as of the honour of Kreuker, by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee.
