[BEDFORD.] Inq. Thursday after St. Katherine the Virgin, 16 Edward III.
Sutton. 1/2a. land and 1a. meadow held of the king in chief by service of 1/2d. yearly of suit and ward, payable by the hands of the sheriff, and by coming twice yearly to the king’s hundred (court) of Bykeleswade; and a tenement and 9a. land there held of William le Latymer by service of 3d. yearly, in part value of a pair of gilt spurs; and now those tenements are held of Sir Robert de Offord, as of the inheritance of William son of William Latymer.
He died about the feast of St. Nicholas, 18 Edward II.
Reginald le Muleward, aged 22 years, is his next heir.

He held no lands &c. in his demesne as of fee on the day he died, as the jury understand; but in Brockeswode one John le Power delivered (tradidit) to master Roger le Power, parson of the church of Almalie, a messuage, a carucate of land, 3a. wood, 2a. meadow, 4a. pasture and 16s. rent, to hold for the said master Roger’s life, who delivered the same to the said Roger le Power, now deceased, to hold for the said master Roger’s life, with reversion to the said John le Power and his heirs. The said tenements are held of Roger de Mortuo Mari, son and heir of Edmund de Mortuo Mari, a minor and in the king’s wardship, by service of a tenth part of a knight’s fee.

CAMBRIDGE. Inq. taken at Badburgham, 15 June, 16 Edward III.
Shudicampes, Nostrefeld and Horseth. The said Eva held a messuage, 30a. arable, 1 1/2a. meadow and 1a. pasture (extent given), by the enfeoffment of Robert de Penfeld, her father, by the king’s licence, of the king in chief as in socage, and by service of 10d. yearly to the bailiff of the king’s hundred of Chilford, who (paid it) to the sheriff of Kent for the king’s use.
She died on this side of the Decollation of St. John, 9 Edward III.
John de Penfeld her son, aged 30 years and more, is her next heir.
Shudicampes, Nostrefeld and Horseth. The said Agnes held a moiety of the abovesaid messuage, land, meadow and pasture for her life, by way of dower after the death of the aforesaid Robert de Penfeld, lately her husband, as of the inheritance of the said John de Penfeld, of the king in chief, as in socage, and by service of 5d. to the aforesaid bailiff, who (paid it) to the said sheriff, as above.
She held no lands &c. in her demesne as of fee of the inheritance of John de Penfeld in the county on the day she died.
She died on Monday next before the Invention of the Holy Cross, 16 Edward III. The aforesaid John de Penfeld is her next heir in blood.

Brotherwyk. A messuage and 80a. land, which tenements are called the manor of Brotherwyk, and a water-mill there, held of the king in chief by service of 6s. 8d. yearly, to be paid at the king’s castle of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Tonge. A capital messuage, lands, a water-mill, rent &c. (extent given), held in dower of the inheritance of the heir of the said Richard, sometime her husband, of the king as of the honour of Pontefract, then in the king’s hand, by knight’s service.
She held no lands &c. of the king in chief, as of the crown, and held no other lands &c.

Certain lands and tenements, in the hands of certain of their bondmen, held by the said Oliver and Oliver his son, who still survives, to them and the heirs of the said Oliver, deceased, for ever, of the aforesaid bishop, as parcel of the said manor of Camelartone, by the services aforesaid.

GLOUCESTER. Inq. taken at Newenham on Tuesday after the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr, 16 Edward III.
Stanton. The said John in his lifetime gave a messuage, a carucate of land, 20a. meadow, 12a. wood, and 20s. rent, parcel of the manor of Stanton, and held of the king in chief, to Thomas Waldyng his son and Margaret his wife, with the king’s licence by reason of their marriage, to hold to them and the heirs of their bodies of the king and his heirs by the accustomed services, with reversion to the said John and his heirs: and the said John in his lifetime enfeoffed of the residue of the said manor, viz.—a messuage, a windmill, 80a. land, 6a. pasture and 100s. rent, and the advowson of the church, which likewise are held of the king in chief, John Waldyng, the younger, and Roger de la Hull, chaplain, by the king’s licence, to hold to them and their heirs; who, having had full and peaceful seisin thereof, gave the same to the aforesaid John de Stanton, to hold for his life, with remainders to the aforesaid Thomas and Margaret and their said heirs, and to the right heirs of the said John de Stanton, to hold as above. All the aforesaid tenements are held of the king in chief, by service of doing fealty, and rendering two marks yearly at the castle of St. Briavell.
Stanton in the forest of Dene. The bailiwick, held of the king by service of carrying the king’s bow before him in the said bailiwick, when he shall come there to hunt, and by homage, wardship and marriage; and he shall have, for the keeping of the said bailiwick, ‘hosbote’ and haybote, and an old dike (fossatum), and sparrow-hawks, and the barks of whatsoever trees are given or delivered by the king, also the oaks broken and overthrown by the wind.

Memorandum by the escheator that he went to the manor of Great Stanbrugge, which was of the said Petronilla, and is within the liberty of Philippa, queen of England, in the hundred of Rocheford, to take the manor into the king’s hand, and to do what was incumbent on his office, according to the king’s writ; and Geoffrey de Cotes, deputy of John de Monte Gomery steward of the said queen, with the bailiff of the said liberty and others unknown, did not permit him to fulfil his office. He commanded the said bailiff to bring before him jurors to make the inquisition, but he refused, asserting that the king’s escheator ought not to intervene in anything within the said liberty, wherefore the escheator could do nothing further in execution of the writ. The residue of the execution appears in the annexed inquisitions. [The said Petronilla] had no lands &c. in Middlesex on the day she died.

Chepyngtoriton. The borough is held of the king in chief by a fourth part of a barony; which fourth part is divided into five parts, whereof the said Richard held two of the king in chief by knight’s service, with the advowsons of the church of St. Michael and of a certain free chapel of St. James there.
Welcomb. A messuage, two mills and a carucate of land, held of John Daroundel in socage, as of the right of Joan his wife.
Suttecomb. A messuage, two mills and a carucate of land, held jointly with Joan his wife, to them and the heirs of the said Richard, of Eleanor de Hastyng,’ as of the honour of the castle of Barnastapol, by service of a knight’s fee, with the advowson of the church of St. Andrew, Suttecomb.
Poltimor. Half a knight’s fee held by John de Bamfeld of the said Richard by knight’s service, without other service, and the aforesaid Richard [held] of Hugh de Courtenay, earl of Devon.
Northlieu. A quarter of a knight’s fee held by John de Stouford of the said Richard by knight’s service, without other service, and the aforesaid Richard [held] of Hugh le Despenser.
Perellisford. A quarter of a knight’s fee held by William de Gorhywish of the said Richard by knight’s service, without other service, and the aforesaid Richard [held] of Richard Talbot.
Sauncton. A messuage and a carucate of land held by way of wardship by reason of the minority of John Stokhaie, kinsman and heir of Robert Stokhaie, knight, who held of the aforesaid Richard by knight’s service, on account of two parts of Toriton, of which the said Richard died seised; which wardship he bequeathed in his will to Joan his wife in the name of chattels.

Bradden. A messuage, 90a. land, 6a. meadow and 20s. rent, held of the prior of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in England by service of 15d. yearly.
Reginald his son, aged 30 years and more, is his next heir.

BUCKINGHAM. Inq. taken at Newport Paynel, 9 January, 16 Edward III.
Eton and Waterhall. He held no lands &c. in the county on the day he died, because, with the king’s licence, 11 Edward II, he gave the manors aforesaid to Reginald his son and heir, to him and his heirs by charter for ever; and the said Reginald, with the king’s licence, demised the same to the said Henry for his life, with reversion to the said Reginald and his heirs. The said manors are held of the king in chief, viz.—the manor of Eton, by service of keeping a falcon until the time of flight (usque at volatum), and, for that keeping, when he shall have brought the falcon to the king, he shall have the king’s riding horse (equitaturam), with all the king’s equipment (apparatu) and apparel (indumentis), and shall also have the said king’s table, with its trestles and cloth, and all the vessels with which the king shall have been served that day, and a tun (doleum) of wine immediately after the king shall have tasted thereof; and the manor of Waterhall is held by service of finding (vivendi) a man on a horse without a saddle, price 40d., a bow without a string, and an arrow (flactam) without a head, in his army when the king shall order, for his service of the said manor.

The manor, held for his life, of the demise of Reginald his son, with reversion to the said Reginald, by the king’s charter of licence dated at the Tower of London, 10 July, 11 Edward III; which manor is held of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee; a park called ‘le Hyd Park,’ held in form aforesaid of the prior of Christ Church, Canterbury, by service of 4s. yearly; certain tenements called ‘le Eyres’ and Southous, held in form aforesaid of the dean and chapter of St. Martin le Grand, London, by service of 4s. yearly; a tenement called Mareschaleslond, held in form aforesaid of Ralph de Ufford, as of the manor of Fambregg’, by service of 2s. 6d. yearly; and a tenement called Lalereslond, with a wood called Tryndheygrove, held in form aforesaid of the abbot and convent of Byleghe, by service of 4s. yearly.
Depeden. A messuage and two carucates of land, held in form aforesaid of Theobald de Verdoun by service of a pair of gilt spurs, price 6d.
Thunderle. 24a. land called Blauncheslond, with 4a. wood, held in form aforesaid of the heirs of Andrew de Thunderle, who are in the wardship of Andrew de Waleden, by service of 5s. yearly.

Gillyng. The manor (extent given) held in fee tail, because John de Dunmowe, parson of the church of Great Brikhull, and John de Preston, chaplain, gave the said manor to John de Grey and Emma his wife, and to Reginald de Grey and the heirs of his body; and after the said Reginald’s death the said manor descended to John his son and heir by the form of the aforesaid gift, and after his death to Henry his son and heir, and so the said Henry died seised of the manor, which he held of the earl of Oxford by service of a third part of a knight’s fee.
