195.	ANNABEL, LATE THE WIFE OF JOHN PAYNEL.

LINCOLN.	Inq. taken at Westrasen, 28 August, 23 Edward III.
	She was seised on the day she died of divers lands &c. in the county as dower, as of the right of Elizabeth the wife of Thomas de Fulnetby, daughter and one heir, and of John Pouger, kinsman and the other heir, of John son of Philip Paynel, nephew and heir of the aforesaid John Paynel as follows:— Westrasen. A ruinous messuage, 24 bovates of land, 80a. meadow, a water-mill which is worth 40d. yearly, and not more because of a yearly rent charge of 3s. sterling on the said mill for finding a lamp burning on all Sundays and feast days, and especially at night, before the high altar in the church of Westrasen, and divers rents and works of tenants, including 1qr. 2bus., London measure, of malt, or 2s. 6d., and 10d. yearly for a custom called ‘haysilver.’ Oselby. 2s. rent of free tenants or a sore sparrow-hawk. Medilrasen. Five bovates of arable land and 40s. rent. All held of the king in chief by service of half a knight’s fee. She was seised of no other lands &c. in the county. She died on 4 July last. Elizabeth the wife of Thomas de Fulnetby, aged 30 years, and John Pouger, aged 15 years, are heirs of John Paynill, sometime her husband.

SOMERSET.	Inq. taken at Mountagu on Wednesday after St. Peter’s Chains, 23 Edward III.
	He held no lands &c. on the day he died because, being alive and of good memory, he demised to William Knyght and Richard Oliver, chaplains, and Richard le Yonge a messuage and 20a. land in Lade, the manor of Milton Faucomberge and a messuage and a virgate of land in Assh, and a messuage, a dovecot, 37a. arable and 32a. meadow and pasture and a weir in la Bourgh and Werne by Langport. The messuage and land in Lade are held of the king in chief by service of 10s. yearly, and the said William, Richard and Richard acquired them of the said Peter without the king’s licence; the manor of Milton is held of William de Monte Acuto, earl of Salisbury, as of the manor of Mertok, by knight’s service; the messuage and virgate of land in Assh are held of the same earl as of the same manor of Mertok, rendering to the wardens of the church of Mertok three lamps burning in the said church to be filled four times a year; and the tenements in la Bourghe and Werne by Langport are held of the bishop of Bath and Wells by service of 20s. yearly. He died on the feast of the Epiphany last. Thomas Loterel, aged 25 years and more, is his kinsman and heir. Endorsed:—Let it be replaced amongst the escheats of 23 Edward III, part 2.

YORK; LIBERTY OF HOLDERNESS.	Inq. taken at Ryse, Thursday, 15 October, 23 Edward III.
	Ryse. The manor (extent given), including the advowson of the church, which is worth nothing yearly save only the presentation caritatis intuitu, held of the king in chief as of the honour of Aumale, now in the king’s hand, by service of an eighth part of a knight’s fee and doing suit at the king’s wapentake of Holdernesse every three weeks. Wythornwyk. Two and a half carucates of land in the hands of tenants at will rendering 10l. yearly, held of the king in chief as of the honour aforesaid by service of a twentieth part of a knight’s fee and doing suit as above. Catwyk. Two carucates of land. Catfosse. Six carucates of land. Drynghowe. Two carucates and three bovates of land. Ulram. A carucate of land. Estmerton. Three carucates of land. Southfrothyngham. Half a carucate of land. Bilton. A carucate of land. North Skirlagh. Two carucates of land. Hornseburton. Two bovates of land. Esthaytfeld. Three carucates of land. Seton. Three carucates of land. All held of the king in chief as of the honour aforesaid by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee and doing suit as above; which lands divers free tenants held of him by foreign service and rendering 8l. 12s. 1d. yearly. Beghum. Six carucates of land held of the heirs of Herbert de Sancto Quintino by foreign service; which lands divers free tenants held of the said John by foreign service. He died on Friday, 18 September last. Walter his son, aged 30 years and more, is his next heir.

YORK.	Inq. taken at York on Tuesday after St. Andrew, 23 Edward III.
	Estbrunne. A ruinous capital messuage, 20s. rent of free tenants, 12l. rent of customary tenants and tenants at will for divers messuages and 24 bovates of land, 12s. rent of cottars and 2s. perquisites of court only, because of the poverty of the tenants, held of the king in chief as of the crown by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee. Brantyngham. A capital messuage, ten bovates of land, 20s. rent of freemen, 10s. rent of cottars and 1a. meadow held of the king in chief as of the crown by service of an eighth part of a knight’s fee. Skirne. 5a. meadow held of the abbot of Meaux, service not known. He held no other lands &c. in the bailiwick except the castle and manor of Skelton with its members in the parts of Clyveland, of which no mention is made in this inquisition, because the jurors had no knowledge of them. Date of death and heir as above.
YORK.	Inq. taken at Gisburn, Tuesday the feast of the Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 23 Edward III.
	Skelton in Clyveland. The manor with its member of Mersk (extents given), including a castle at Skelton which cannot be kept, maintained and repaired for less than 10 marks yearly, 24 bovates of poor moor land in demesne, which were worth 4l. 16s. yearly before the mortality of men in those parts this year and two parks of Oaks with deer called ‘le Wespark’ and ‘Mangrey’; which manor by his charter he granted to Adam de Derlyngton, chaplain, who granted the same to the said John for his life, with remainder to Walter son of the said John and his heirs. The said manor, with its appurtenances, except two carucates of land, is held of the king in chief as of the crown by service of a knight’s fee and a half and by homage; and the two carucates are held of Henry de Percy by knight’s service. Langebergh. The office of bailiff (balliva) of the wapentake held of the king in chief by service of rendering 40 marks yearly at the exchequer by the hands of the sheriff of York, which 40 marks the present king by his charter granted to Thomas de Rokeby, Luncle, and his heirs, as the jurors understand. The said office is worth only 20l. yearly and so does not suffice for the payment of the said rent to the king. He held no other lands &c. in the parts of Clyveland nor elsewhere in the escheator’s bailiwick, except the lands &c. in Estbrunne and elsewhere contained in the inquisition hereto attached. 	She held no lands &c. in the bailiwick. She died on Whitsunday last. Robert de Holand, her son, aged 30 years and more, is her heir.

BUCKINGHAM.	Inq. taken at Aylesbury before Thomas Fermbaud or Ferbaud, escheator, on Saturday the feast of the Decollation of St. John the Baptist, 23 Edward III.
	Little Broghton by Aylesbury. The manor, held of Henry earl of Lancaster as of the honour of Leicester as dower after the death of Robert de Holand, sometime her husband, by service of a rose yearly. Date of death, and heir Robert de Holand, knight, as above.

DERBY.	Inq. taken at Dalbury, Wednesday after St. Lawrence the Martyr, 23 Edward III.
	Dalbury. The manor (extent given), the reversion whereof belongs to Robert son and heir of the said Robert de Holand, held for her life by the grant of Adam de Preston, of Henry earl of Lancaster by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee. Wirkesworth. Two messuages and a carucate of land held in like manner of the dean and chapter of Lincoln of the right of their church of St. Mary, Lincoln, by service of 6s. and suit at their court of Wirkesworth. She died on Saturday the eve of Whitsunday last. Heir as above.

	Denford. The manor (extent given), including a mill called a ‘toukyng mull’ and a several fishery, held of the earl of Hereford by service of a mark yearly. She held no other lands &c. in the county. She died on Whitsunday last. Heir as above.

LEICESTER.	Inq. taken at Shepesheved, 4 July, 23 Edward III (fn. 1).
	Shepesheved. A third part of the manor (extent given) held of the king in chief by service of an eighth part of a knight’s fee for her life, jointly with Robert de Holand, deceased, late her husband, of the gift of Adam de Preston and William de Wyrkesworth, who enfeoffed them thereof for their lives, with remainder to Robert their son and the heirs of his body, by fine in the king’s court. Bagworth and Thorneton. The manors and certain lands &c. at Halynghawe held in dower of the inheritance of Robert her son, of Henry earl of Leicester and Thomas earl of Warwick by definite (certa) services. She held no other lands &c. in the county. Date of death as last above. Heir as above, aged 30 years and more at Easter last.

NORTHAMPTON.	Inq. taken at Brackele, Wednesday the feast of St. Botulph, 23 Edward III.
	Hals and Brackele. The manor held for her life of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee of the gift of Adam de Preston and William de Wirkesworth to her and Robert, her late husband, for their lives, with remainder to Robert their son and the heirs of his body, which son Robert survives. Kyngessutton. The manor, with the hundred of Sutton, held to her and the heirs of the bodies of herself and Robert, sometime her husband, of the gift of Hugh de Denford, of the earl of Lincoln by service of a sparrow-hawk or 2s. yearly; the reversion belongs to Robert their son. She held no other lands &c. in the county. Date of death and heir as first above.

WILTS.	Inq. taken at Marleberwe, Thursday after St. James the Apostle, 23 Edward III.
	Wamberwe. The manor (extent given), held to her and the heirs of the bodies of herself and Robert, sometime her husband, by the gift of Hugh de Deneford, of Sir Edward, prince of Wales, as of the manor of Aldebourne which is parcel of the earldom of Salisbury now in the said prince’s hand, by service of mowing the meadows of Stoniham and Dokham of the manor of Aldebourne, for which service the lord of Wamberwe shall have ‘husbote’ and ‘heybote’ in the lord of Aldebourne’s wood in Bradene. She held no other lands &c. in the county. Date of death as first above. Heir as above, aged 25 years and more.

LANCASTER.	Inq. taken at Preston in Amoundernesse, 12 June, 23 Edward III.
	Holand. The manor (extent given), the reversion whereof belongs to Robert son and heir of Robert, sometime her husband, by the grant of Adam de Preston, held for her life of Henry earl of Lancaster in socage by homage and fealty and service of 12s. yearly and by suit at the county of Lancaster every six weeks and at the wapentake of Derby every three weeks. Hale. The manor similarly held of the same earl by fealty and by suit at the wapentake of Derby every three weeks. Samlesbury. A moiety of the manor similarly held of the same earl in socage by fealty and service of 6s. yearly and by suit at the wapentake of Clyderhowe every three weeks. Torysholm. The manor similarly held of the same earl in socage by homage and fealty and by service of 8s. yearly. Dalton. The manor similarly held of Roger la Ware in socage by fealty and service of 13d. yearly. Bryghtemete. A moiety of the hamlet similarly held of the same Roger in socage by fealty and service of 20d. yearly. Harewod. A twelfth part of the manor similarly held of the same Roger in socage by fealty and service of 1d. yearly. Haydok. The manor similarly held of Robert de Langton in socage by fealty and service of 6s. 8d. yearly and by suit at the said Robert’s court of Neuton in Makerefeld every three weeks. Goldeburn. A moiety of the manor similarly held of the same Robert de Langton in socage by fealty and service of 6d. yearly. Orell and Overderwent. The manor of Orell and a fourth part of the manor of Overderwent, similarly held of the same Robert in socage by fealty and service of 5s. 1d. yearly and by suit at the said Robert’s court of Neuton. She held no other lands &c. in the county. Date of death not known because she died outside the county. Robert de Holand, knight, son of the said Robert and Maud, of full age, is her heir.

LINCOLN.	Inq. taken at Spillesby, 10 July, 23 Edward III.
	Malbethorp. A moiety of a carucate of land held of the king in chief by homage and fealty only. Skyrbek. John de Neuton, parson of the church of Spillesby, and Stephen Tours were seised of a messuage and the lastage of Skyrbek; and they, by their charter with the king’s licence and by fine levied in the octave of the Purification, 18 Edward III, granted the aforesaid messuage and lastage to the said John de Wylughby and Joan his wife and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of the said John de Welughby. The said messuage and lastage are held of the king in chief by homage and fealty only. Orreby. Robert de Hamby, parson of the church of Hoggesthorp, and John de Mundene, parson of the church of Welughby, were seised of the manor of Orreby in fee and gave the same to the said John de Welughby and Joan his wife and the heirs of the said John. It is held of John de Orreby, knight, by homage and fealty only, and the said John holds it of the king in chief by the same service. Erysby. The inner site of the manor within the ditch, enclosed by a stone wall and houses, held by the said John of the bishop of Durham by homage and fealty only, and the said bishop holds it as part of the manor of Erysby of the king in chief by homage and fealty only. He was seised of no other lands &c. in the county on the day he died, because long before he gave all his other lands &c. to Thomas de Fryskeneye, parson of the church of Welughby, Stephen Tours, William de Orston, parson of the church of Wysspyngton, and John Caus, parson of the church of St. Peter, Malberthorp. He died on Saturday after Corpus Christi last. John de Welughby, knight, his son, aged 20 1/2 years and more, is his heir.

NORFOLK.	Inq. taken at Norwich, 24 October, 23 Edward III.
	Wethacre, Hoboys, Chategrave, Eggefeld and Walgote. A moiety of the manors held jointly with Joan his wife, who survives, to them and the heirs of the said John; and the other moiety of the said manors similarly held, as of the inheritance of the said Joan. The manors of Wethacre and Hoboys are held of John le fitz Water by service of a knight’s fee; the manors of Walcote and Eggefeld are held of Robert de Benhale, as of the manor of Horsforthe by service of a knight’s fee; and the manor of Chategrave is held of John le fitz Water by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee. He died on 2 July last, as the jurors understand. Heir as above, aged 20 years and more.

BERKS.	Inq. taken at Bastelden, 5 June, 23 Edward III.
	Bastelden. The manor (extent given) held of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee and four marks payable yearly at the exchequer by the hands of the sheriff of Berks. There used to be 100s. rent of bondmen and cottars, but now all their tenements are in the lord’s hands through the death of the tenants during this pestilence and the tenements are worth nothing, for almost all the people are dead this year, and all the said lands and tenements lie in common. He held no other lands &c. He died on Monday the morrow of the Invention of the Holy Cross last. Thomas le Botiller, his son, aged 30 years, is his heir.

SOUTHAMPTON.	Inq. taken at Winchester on Monday after St. Vincent, 23 Edward III.
	Wymeryng. The manor, worth 20l. yearly, held jointly with Margery his wife, of the grant of Robert de Wolverton and Robert le Warner, chaplain, for their lives, with remainder to John son of the said John and the heirs of his body, of the king in chief by service of 1d. yearly. Lokerle. The manor held of the king in chief by the service aforesaid and by rendering to the king at his exchequer 6l. 7s. 8d. yearly. He died on 20 December last. John his son, aged 30 years, is his heir.

SOUTHAMPTON.	Inq. taken at Winchester on Wednesday before the Purification, 24 Edward III.
	Wymeryngge. The manor held jointly as above, by the gift of the same Robert and Robert, who held the said manor of the gift of the said John le Boteler, and enfeoffed the said John and Margery thereof, to hold for their lives, as abovesaid, with remainder to John son of the said John and the heirs of his body, and further successive remainders to John le Boteler, knight, and Margery his wife (sic) (fn. 2) and the heirs of the said John’s body, and the right heirs of the said John le Boteler, knight. The said Margery survives and holds the manor for life by virtue of this feoffment. The manor is held of the king in chief by service of 1d. yearly at the exchequer by the hands of the sheriff of Southampton. It is worth 24l. yearly and no more, because many tenants have died in the present pestilence. Lokerle, Estuderle and Burghton. A messuage, a carucate of land containing 300a. arable, 10a. wood, 1a. meadow and 40s. rent held of the king by a fee farm of 6l. 11s. 9d. yearly at the exchequer by the hands of the sheriff of Southampton. He died on Sunday before St. Thomas the Apostle, 23 Edward III, without heir by Margery his wife. John his son by Joan his first wife, aged 30 years, is his heir.

	Grendon. A messuage, five cottages, 5a. arable and 1/2a. 1r. meadow held for her life, of the inheritance of the heir of Ralph le Boteler, of John de Haryngton, knight, by service of 12d. yearly and two appearances at his view of frankpledge. She died on 19 June. Edmund son of the said Joan and John, age not known because he was not born in the county, is their heir.

	Cudelyngton. The manor (extent given) held jointly with Elizabeth his wife and the heirs male of their bodies, by fine levied on the morrow of the Ascension, 19 Edward III, of the king in chief by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee. There used to be 14 bondmen, but six of them have died in the pestilence, and their lands are in the lord’s hand and he fallow and are worth nothing because they are in common. He held no other lands &c. in the county. He died on 2 September last. John his brother, aged 17 years and more, is his heir.

SOUTHAMPTON.	Inq. taken at Overton, Thursday in Whitsun week, 23 Edward III.
	La Stevenebury in Preston Candevere. He held no lands &c. in the county on the day he died, but his father William and Christina his wife held the manor of la Stevenebury in survivorship, with reversion to the said Thomas and the heirs male of his body. 	Fremantel. 240a. of several pasture near the king’s park of Fremantel held jointly by the said William and Christina, of the king in chief; which pasture King Edward II gave to the said William and Christina for their lives, without rendering anything to him, with reversion to himself; and afterwards the present king granted and by his charter confirmed to the aforesaid William that after the deaths of the said William and Christina the said pasture should descend to the right heirs of the said William, to hold of the king in chief by service of 40s. yearly. Polhampton by Assh. The manor (extent given), including the custody of a messuage and three virgates of land, by reason of the minority of William, son of William de Polhampton, who held by knight’s service, who is two years of age, held by the said William and Christina of the king in chief; which manor King Edward II gave to them to hold of him for their lives, and it was sometime the escheat of the king’s progenitors by the death of the count of Aumale who held it of the king by knight’s service, as parcel of his earldom; and afterwards the present king granted to the said William for his service long rendered to the king’s progenitors and to the king himself, that the said manor should after the deaths of the said William and Christina descend to the right heirs of the said William, to hold of the king as chief lord, without rendering him anything. The said manor was, before the death of the said William and Christina, seized into the king’s hand by the escheator, for what cause is not known to the jurors; but, notwithstanding this, the said William and Christina continued their seisin without interruption and died seised, claiming the demesne and fee thereof by the abovesaid grant of the present king. La Stevenebury in Preston Candevere. The manor (extent given) held of the lord of the manor of Bradefeld, co. John de Ros, knight, deceased, sometime husband of the said Margaret, was at one time seized of the manor of Turnumhalle (extent given) including a fishery in the river Ouse, and perquisites &c. of court, worth 2s. only because of the mortality and want of men, and tenements in Clif, and by his charter gave the same to George de Ros, knight, and Peter de Rither, parson of the church of Kyrkeby Misperton; who granted the same to the aforesaid John de Ros and Margaret and the heirs of the said John for ever. The said manor and tenements are held of the bishop of Durham by fealty and by service of rendering 9l. yearly. The reversion of the said manor and tenements, after the death of the said Margaret, belongs to William de Ros, a minor in the king’s wardship, son and heir of William de Ros of Hamelak, deceased, brother and heir of the said John de Ros. The present lung on 24 August last granted the said manor to the said William de Ros the son, under a certain form, and he thus holds it. Thornton in Craven. The said John de Ros, knight, was seised of the manor (extent given) and the advowson of the church, and by his charter gave the same to the aforesaid George and Peter, who regranted the same as above. The said manor and advowson are held of Henry de Percy by knight’s service and by doing suit at the said Henry’s court of Spofford every three weeks. The reversion after the death of the said Margaret belongs to Thomas son of William de Ros of Hamelak, deceased, because the said William was brother and heir of the said John; which William, long before his death, by his charter granted to the said Thomas his son, the reversion of the said manor and advowson, by virtue of which grant the said Margaret attorned in her lifetime to the said Thomas therefor, and did fealty to him as lord thereof. 	Lomene. One Reynold de Wilyngton was seised of the manor (extent given), with the advowson, and also of a carucate of land in Morlegh and Noreisheghes, and gave the same in the reign of the present king to the said Henry and Isabel his wife and the heirs of the said Henry; by virtue of which gift the said Henry and Isabel held the manor and advowson on the day Henry died, of the heirs of Hugh le Despenser, as of the honour of Gloucester, a third part of the said carucate of land in Noreisheghs of the same heirs by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee, and two parts of the said carucate of land in Morlegh immediately of Sir John Fitzpayn for a fifth part of a knight’s fee, rendering 12d. yearly to him as chief lord and 6s. rent sec yearly to Edmund de Saunford. He died on 23 May, 23 Edward III. Heir as above, aged 7 years and more.
