	Writ, 26 November, 23 Edward III.
YORK.	Inq. taken at Pokelyngton, Saturday after St. Hilary, 23 Edward III.
	Northgeveldale and Estgeveldale. A messuage and nine bovates of land at Northgeveldale and a bovate and a third part of a bovate at Estgeveldale, which lies waste because of the mortality of men this year, held of the king in chief, as of the crown, by homage and by service of a sixth part of a certain serjeanty, the whole of which is held of the king in chief by service of finding a crossbowman in the castle of York at his own charges for forty days, if there be war in the county. He held no other lands &c. in the county. He died on 25 July last. His sisters Alice, aged 26 years, and Agnes, aged 24 years, are his heirs.

	Holmeton. A messuage and three bovates of land held of the king in chief, as of the honour of Aumale, which is in the king’s hand, by service of a hundredth part of a knight’s fee. He died on 22 August last. John, son of William de Carleton, aged 40 years, Thomas, son of John son of Peter de Shirburn, aged 12 years, and John, son of Stephen Trippok, aged 6 years, are his heirs.

YORK; LIBERTY OF HOLDERNESS.	Inq. taken at Hedon, Monday, 26 October, 23 Edward III.
	Pensthorp. A messuage, three tofts and five bovates of land, including a toft held by William son of Ralph for his life by service of 1d. yearly, a messuage and a bovate of land held by Robert son of Ralph for his life by service of a clove yearly and a wind-mill held by John Moriel for his life by service of 6d. yearly, held of the king in chief, as of the honour of Aumale which is in the king’s hand, by service of a seventy-seventh part of a knight’s fee. Holmeton. A messuage, three tofts, and two bovates of land, including a cottage held by Evota Dodde for her life by service of rendering 12d. yearly, held of the king in chief, as of the honour aforesaid, by service of a hundred and ninetieth part of a knight’s fee; and nine tofts and nine bovates of land held in service of the king in chief, as of the honour aforesaid, by service of a fortieth part of a knight’s fee, which were held of the aforesaid Ralph by the foreign service. He died on 19 August last. Heirs as above.

	Kyngeseye. The manor, held for life, of the king in chief, as of the barony of Bulbek, by service of a knight’s fee, and by homage and fealty, by the grant of Robert de Marny, with the king’s licence by his charter, dated at Westminster, 16 November, 21 Edward III, and by a fine, with reversion to the said Robert and his heirs. She held no other lands, &c. in the bailiwick. She died on 20 March last. The said Robert de Marny, aged 30 years and more, is her heir.

HUNTINGDON.	Inq. taken at Brampton, 5 [6 in the exchequer inquisition] September, 23 Edward III.
	Brampton. A messuage, 86a. arable, 15a. meadow and 24s. 9d. rent held for life, of the king in chief, by service of 6s. yearly by the hands of the sheriff, with remainder to John, son of John Faron, of Neubury, deceased, and his heirs, by a fine levied with the king’s licence. He died on Sunday before the Assumption last. Richard, brother of John, son of John Faron, of Neubury, deceased, aged 20 years, is by the said fine heir of the said John de Farendon.

A knight’s fee, viz.—40s. rent and 20a. arable, and at Kocryde 20a., 400a. salt land at the sea by Apoldre of no value, and 33a. land uncultivated and bushy (susan’ et boscal’), and the advowson of the church; 100a. held of the abbot of St. Augustine’s, Canterbury, in gavelkind, by suit of court every three weeks and 15s. yearly rent; 7a. besides his tenants, held of the prior of Dover by suit of court as above, and rendering 15s. 8d. for himself and his tenants; 40a. held of Kenewardyngton by suit as above, and rendering 2s. 4d.; 6a. held of the court of Onekyng by suit of court as above, and rendering 2s. yearly; 6a. held of the archbishop of Canterbury by suit of court as above, and rendering 12d.; 80a. of gavelkind at Kocride held of Honychild by suit of court and 11s. rent; 15a. held of the archbishop of Canterbury by suit of court and rendering 12d.; and 6a. held of John Capel by suit of court and rendering 8s. 319.	JOHN RUSSELL.
	Writ to the escheator in co. Worcester touching the death of the said John, who held by knight’s service of the abbey of Westminster, which is vacant and in the king’s hand, 14 June, 23 Edward III.
WORCESTER.	Part of an inquisition (undated).
	Strengesham. As for another writ touching the death of John Russell, the aforesaid jurors say that he held no lands, &c. in his demesne as of fee in the said county of the said abbey, but he held the manor of Strengesham and the advowson of the church there, of the said abbey, according to the form of a certain fine in fee tail in remainder (in le remanere), by service of a knight’s fee, in form following— one Nicholas Russel, who lately held the said manor and advowson, enfeoffed Robert Russell, parson of the church of Strengesham, who re-enfeoffed the said Nicholas and Agnes his wife thereof, to hold to them and the heirs of their bodies, with successive remainders to John, son of the said Nicholas, and the heirs of his body, who died without heir of his body; Edmund, brother of the said John, and the heirs of his body, who died long before the said John, without an heir of his body, and Robert his brother, and the heirs of his body. He held no other lands &c. in the county. He died on Thursday in Whitsun week last. The said Robert brother of the said Edmund, to whom the manor &c. ought to remain, was 30 years of age and more at Easter last.

SOUTHAMPTON; ISLE OF WIGHT.	Inq. taken at Brerdyng, 10 October, 23 Edward III.
	Nonnewelle. A messuage and a carucate of land held of the king in chief, as of the honour of the castle of Carsbrok, whereof the said Reynold was enfeoffed jointly with Roberta his wife, who survives, by service of doing suit at the court of knights of Neuport every three weeks. He held nothing of other lords. He died on 14 May last. Robert his son, aged half a year, is his heir.

321.	WILLIAM DE LA CARVAILL.

NORTHAMPTON.	Inq. taken at Earl’s Barton, 16 August, 23 Edward III.
	Earl’s Barton. A messuage &c., 60a. arable, 12a. meadow lying on the bank of the Nene, a several pasture called le Hay and before this pestilence (pestilenciam istius seculi) there were 106s. 8d. rent and a pair of spurs, or 6d. yearly, held of the heir of Laurence de Hastynges, late earl of Pembroke, a minor in the king’s wardship, by knight’s service. The said William, seven years ago, granted to his sons Thomas, John, and Robert, for their lives, in survivorship, 60s. rent yearly from all the aforesaid lands, &c. Wolde. 40s. land and rent held of the earl of Oxford by knight’s service. He died on Wednesday, the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist last. Maud his daughter, aged one year and more, is his heir.

	Sutton Walrond. The manor (extent given), held in dower, of the inheritance of Laurence de Sancto Martino, of the king in chief by knight’s service. She died on 26 April last. Laurence de Sancto Martino, aged 30 years and more, is her heir.

SOUTHAMPTON,	Inq. taken at Est Deone, Friday, the morrow of the Ascension, 23 Edward III.
	(Unspecified.) A toft, 40a. arable, 2a. meadow, 15a. great oak wood which is common to many, 13s. 4d. rent and pleas &c. of court, held in dower, of the inheritance of Laurence de Sancto Martino after the death of Laurence de Sancto Martino her first husband, father of the aforesaid Laurence, of the king in chief, as parcel of the barony of Deone, by service of a twentieth part of a knight’s fee. She held no other lands &c. in the county of the said inheritance. She died on 26 April, 23 Edward III. Laurence de Sancto Martino, her son, aged 30 years, is her heir.

A messuage, a carucate of land, now worth only 20s. yearly because of the pestilence, and 1a. meadow held of Walter de Baskervile, as of the hamlet of Pikethome, by service of 13s. 4d. yearly. He died on 18 August last. Katharine, daughter of Hugh de Aldenham, his brother, aged 5 years at Easter last, is his heir.

La More. A messuage and a virgate of land held of the parson of the church of Alvedeley by service of 10s. yearly. He died on St. Margaret’s day last. Alice his daughter, aged 6 years at Easter last, is his heir.

329.	JOHN DE SANCTO MAURO of Herdwyk.

NORTHAMPTON.	Inq. taken at Herdwyk, 14 November, 23 Edward III.
	Grafton. He held no lands, &c. in the county in demesne as of fee &c., except certain in Grafton, because, long before his death, he demised all his lands &c. in Herdwyk and Irtlyngburgh to William de Sancto Mauro of Herdwyk, his heirs and assigns, by virtue whereof the said William was seised for a great time during the life of the said John. The said lands &c. are held of Simon Symeon, as of the manor of Grafton, by service of 1d. and doing suit at the aforesaid Simon’s court every three weeks, and other services. The said manor is held of the king in chief, by service of keeping a white brachet hound (bragettum) having red ears (aureus rubeas). He died on Tuesday before St. Margaret last. John his son, aged 13 years and more, is his heir.

NORTHUMBERLAND.	Inq. taken at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 10 September, 23 Edward III.
	Byker. The manor, held of the king, a moiety to himself and his heirs and the other moiety to himself and Juliana his wife, who survives, and to the heirs of the said Robert, by homage and fealty, and by service of 40s. yearly to be rendered to the sheriff of Northumberland to the king’s use, for the whole manor of Byker, and likewise by serjeanty, viz. by a sixth part of a knight’s fee, viz. receiving and keeping safe in his fold at Byker all distraints taken within the county by the sheriff for debts to the king. He held no other lands &c. in the bailiwick. He died on 12 August, 23 Edward III. Hugh de Byker, his brother, aged 40 years and more, is his heir.

He held no other lands &c. so far as the jurors can enquire. He died on Friday after the Nativity of St. John the Baptist last. Richard le Blount, his brother, aged 30 years and more, is his heir.

Conyngston. Two parts of a bovate of land held of the abbot of Thornton by fealty and by service of 8d. yearly; a toft held of Amandus Sourdevale by service of 1d. yearly; and 1a. land held of the heir of Richard de Helpston by service of 1d. yearly. He died on 4 August last. Adam his son, aged 30 years and more, is his heir.

HEREFORD AND THE ADJACENT MARCH OF WALES.	Inq. taken at Prendilgast, Saturday after the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr, 23 Edward III.
	The barony of Tallagharn. A barony of the March, including a castle, held of the king in chief by homage and service of two knights’ fees, viz. with two barded horses or eight footmen, according to the custom of those parts, for three days at his own costs, at the summons of the king’s bailiffs of Kermerdyn, as often as necessary in time of war, and doing suit at the county of Kermerdyn every month. Flechirhill in Dungledy. A knight’s fee held in service of Philip de Stanton, knight, by homage and suit at the said Philip’s court of Wyston every fifteen days by summons. He died on 17 June last. Guy de Bryan, knight, his son, aged 30 years and more, is his heir.

	Exford. A messuage and a carucate of land held for life of the king in chief in free socage by service of a pair of gilt spurs or 6d. yearly; the reversion whereof belongs to Henry de Merlaunde, son and heir of Henry de Merlaunde. She held no other lands &c. on the day she died. She died on the feast of St. Matthew last. Henry, son of Henry de Merlaunde and of the said Joan, aged 30 years and more, is her heir.

	Sandherst. A messuage and 100a. arable held of the king, as of the archbishopric of Canterbury which is vacant, by service of an eighth part of a knight’s fee; and a messuage and 120a. land and pasture at Betryngdenne in the same town held in gavelkind of the king, as of the same archbishopric, of the manor of Aldyngtone, by service of rendering 6s. 8d. yearly at the said manor. He died on 21 June, 23 Edward III. Joan his sister, aged 7 years, is his heir.

336.	MASTER ROGER CANTOK.

GLOUCESTER.	Inq. taken at Grymbaldesaysch, Saturday after SS. Peter and Paul, 23 Edward III.
	Derham. The manor held by the demise of Sir Theobald Russel, knight, for the life of the said Roger and for one year after his death to his executors, as appears by the king’s charter to the said Roger in confirmation of the said estate, of the king by service of a knight’s fee. He died on Monday in Whitsun week last. John de Acton, aged 40 years, is his kinsman and heir; and Ralph Bussel, aged 30 years, is son and heir of Sir Theobald Russel.

BUCKS.	Inq. taken at Aylesburi, Wednesday after the Assumption, 23 Edward III.
	Herdewyk and Wedon by Ailesburi. The manor, held for his life and a year, as above, by the charter of Theobald Russel, knight, of the king in chief by service of a third part of a knight’s fee. Date of death as above. Ralph Russel, aged 30 years and more, is son and heir of Theobald Russel, from whom the said Roger had an estate for life as above, which estate the said executors have surrendered to the said Ralph.

337.	BEATRICE, WIFE OF WILLIAM DE QUENETON, knight.

ESSEX.	Inq. taken at Chelmersford, Tuesday after St. Leonard, 23 Edward III.
	Whyterothyng. A messuage, a carucate of land and 36s. 8d. rent, called ‘Merkes tenement,’ with the advowson of the church, held by her and the said William, who survives, as of her right and inheritance, of the king in chief by service of grand serjeanty. They had a daughter Alice, who was heir of the said Beatrice and lived for fifteen days after her mother’s death. The said Beatrice died on Wednesday after SS. Peter and Paul last. John Wychebaud and Roger Grenekertol, of full age, are kinsmen and heirs of the said Alice and are now heirs of the said Beatrice.

338.	SERLO TREGANOUN.

YORK.	Inq. taken at Cotyngham, Thursday before the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 23 Edward III.
	Northdalton. A yearly rent of 6l. 13s. 4d. from the lands and tenements which Edmund de Hastyng’ holds in fee, held for the said Serlo’s life, by the king’s grant, with reversion to the king and his heirs. The said tenements are held of the heir of William de Roos of Hamelak, a minor in the king’s wardship, by service of a third part of a knight’s fee. The king by his letters patent lately granted to John de Stryvelyn among other lands &c. the reversion of the aforesaid rent after the said Serlo’s death. He held no other lands &c. in the county. Date of death not known, because he died without the county, but by hearsay the jurors understand that he died on 10 March last. Heir not known.

	Cawod. A messuage, 60a. land and 6a. meadow, which tenements, together with 60a. land in the same town which John son of the said John holds by the king’s licence, are held of the king in chief as of the crown by service of keeping the king’s forest between Use and Derewente and by homage. He held no other lands &c. in the county. He died on 20 August last. John de Cawod, his son, aged 26 years and more, is his heir.

	Holem. A messuage and four bovates of land held jointly with Mabel his wife, who held the same after the said Thomas’s death and died on Saturday, 5 September last, to them and the heirs of their bodies, of the king in chief as of the honour of Aumale, which is in the king’s hand, by service of a ninety-sixth part of a knight’s fee. He died on Sunday, 4 October, 22 Edward III. Isabel, aged 40 years, and Alice, aged 26 years and more, daughters of the said Thomas and Mabel, are his heirs.

	Oldelonde. There remained not (non remancerunt (fn. 1) ) in the king’s hand by reason of the said John’s minority the whole manor of Oldelonde, which is held of the king by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee. He held of no other lord in chief, except of the king. He died on 12 July, 23 Edward III. Cicely, daughter of the said William, is sister and heir of the said John, and was 14 years of age at the feast of St. Stephen last.

	Yarwell. No one of the hundred of Wilibrok, who held of the king in chief, died from the feast of St. Michael last to the Sunday before the same feast next following, except Robert de Yarwelle, who held a messuage, 26a. land and 3a. meadow in Yarwell of the king in chief by service of keeping the king’s wood called Sule in the forest of Clyve. The land is stony and the greater part lies above the said wood, and when it is ploughed and sown the corn growing thereon is destroyed by the deer (feras) of the forest. He died about the feast of the Ascension last. John his son, aged 30 years and more, is his heir.

The manor, held of the earl of Oxford and John Bottetourte, title and service not known. He died on Thursday after St. Margaret last. John his son, aged 15 years, is his heir.

	Stayngreve and Nonyngton. The manors, together with certain lands &c. in Westnesse, Westnonyngton and Muscotes pertaining to the said manors, which by his charter he gave to Henry Hubert and Robert de Foxele, chaplains, who gave the said manors and tenements to the said John de Pateshull for life, with remainder to William de Pateshull and Joan his wife and the heirs of their bodies, and failing such heirs to the right heirs of the said John de Pateshull, by fine levied in the court of the present king. The said William and Joan survive. The manor of Stayngreve is held of Andrew Lutterel by knight’s service, as are also the manor of Nonyngton and the tenements in Westnesse. The tenements in Westnonynton are held of the abbot of St. Mary’s, York, by service of 10s. yearly. The tenements in Muscotes are held of Gilbert de Aton by knight’s service.
