OXFORD. Inq. taken at Ewelme, 26 September, 25 Edward III.
Le Ewelme. The manor called ‘le Spenseres fee’ (extent given), including a wood called ‘Heycroft,’ and the advowson of the church of Ewelme, held of the king in chief by service of a twentieth part of a barony. Death of tenants by pestilence. A toft, a carucate of land, 2a. meadow and 21s. rent; and a messuage and a carucate of land at la Dene held of Gerard del Isle by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee; a moiety of a carucate of land and 15s. rent held of the earl of Oxford by service of a tenth part of a knight’s fee.
La Dene. A virgate of land held of the duke of Cornwall by service of 3s. yearly.
Tythrop. Two virgates of land and a dovecot held of William Was by service of 3d. yearly; half a virgate of land held of John Tony, John Colynes and Gilbert Rolves by service of 2s. yearly.
He held no other lands &c. in the county in demesne or service.
He died on 30 June, 23 Edward III. John de Burgherssh, his son, aged eight years and more, is his heir.

SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Aulton, 12 January, 24 Edward III.
Estworldham. The manor (extent given), whereof 120a. arable, 170a. pasture, 4a. meadow, and 62s. rent are held of the king in chief by grand serjeanty and by service of 113s. 8d. yearly at the exchequer by the hands of the sheriff of Southampton, and 130a. arable and 8a. meadow are held of the earl of Kent by service of 52s. yearly, payable at his manor of Aulton.
He died on Sunday the feast of SS. Peter and Paul, 23 Edward III. Heir as above, aged six years.

571. ALICE, LATE THE WIFE OF WARIN DE INSULA.
Writ, after the death of the said Alice, who held by knight’s service of the heir of William de Roos, a minor in the king’s wardship, 6 June, 24 Edward III.
YORK. Inq. taken at Pokelyngton, Thursday the feast of St. Martin in the winter, 24 Edward III.
Alice, late the wife of Warin de Insula, and Alice Tieys are the same person.
Brakene. Two parts of the manor, with the reversion of the third part thereof, which Margaret, late the wife of Henry Tieys, then held in dower of the inheritance of the said Alice. The whole manor (extent given) is held of the heir of William de Roos of Hamelak, late a minor in the king’s wardship, by homage and by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee and rendering 26s. 8d. yearly. This rent is parcel of the manor of Garton, which manor is part of the dower assigned to Margery, late the wife of William de Roos, who still receives the said rent.
She held no other lands &c. in the county.
She died on 2 August, 21 Edward III. The aforesaid Margaret died on 20 May, 23 Edward III. Gerard de Insula, knight, son of the said Alice, aged 40 years and more, is her heir.

572. ELIZABETH, LATE THE WIFE OF OLIVER DE INGHAM.
Writ, 10 November, 24 Edward III.
WILTS. Inq. taken at Stupellangeford, 18 November, 24 Edward III.
Stupellangeford. A moiety of the manor.
Hampteworth. The manor.
Both held by way of dower assigned in chancery after the death of Oliver her husband.
Estcodeford. A third part of the manor, held by way of dower, which she recovered in the king’s court against John Robert and Robert de Martham, who held the manor for the life of Katherine, late the wife of John son of the said Oliver, in this way:—Oliver demised the manor to his son John and Katherine his wife and the heirs of their bodies, with reversion to himself and his heirs. John died without issue of himself and Katherine. After his death she demised the said manor, with the king’s licence, to John Robert, Robert de Martham and John, son of Robert de Thorp, for her life, and after that demise she assumed the religious habit in the order of minoresses of the abbey without Algate, London, in which she is professed. The said John Robert, Robert and John son of Robert are dead.
The moiety of the manor of Stupellangeford is held of the king in chief by service of an eighth part of a knight’s fee. The manor of Hampteworth is held of the bishop of Winchester by service of half a knight’s fee. The third part of the manor of Estcodeford is held of the king in chief by service of a sixth part of a knight’s fee.
She died on 11 October, 24 Edward III. The reversion of all the aforesaid lands &c. belongs to Joan, late the wife of Roger Lestraunge, daughter and heir of Oliver de Ingham, who is of full age.

BERKS. Inq. taken at Wanetyng, 8 May, 24 Edward III.
Schaldeburn. The manor (extent given) held for her life by way of dower, after the death of Robert her husband, of the inheritance of Adam de Clifton and John de Orreby, both surviving, kinsmen and heirs of Robert de Tateshale, and of Robert son of William de Bernak, to whom John son of William de Bernak, the other heir, granted his pourparty, viz. a third part of the reversion of the said manor, after the said Eve’s death, to him and the heirs male of his body. The manor is held of Peter son of Herbert by service of a rose yearly.
She held no other lands &c. in the county in demesne or service.
She died on 22 March last. The aforesaid Adam de Clifton and John de Orreby, of full age, are her heirs. Robert son of William de Bernak is of full age.

LINCOLN. Inq. taken at Toft in Kesteven, 7 May, 24 Edward III.
Toft and Tidde St. Mary. The manors (extents given) held for her life by way of dower, of the inheritance of Adam de Clifton and John de Orreby, and of Robert son of William de Bernak as in the preceding inquisition. The manor of Toft is held of the manor of Folkyngham by service of half a knight’s fee and the manor of Folkyngham is held of the king in chief by homage and fealty only. The manor of Tydd is held of Henry, earl of Lancaster, by service of 5s. yearly, and the said earl holds it of the king in chief by homage and fealty only.

YORK. Inq. taken at Wentbrig, 4 August, 24 Edward III.
Darthyngton. The manor (extent given, shewing effects of pestilence), with tenements in Wentbrig pertaining thereto, held of Henry, earl of Lancaster, as of the honour of Pontefract, by knight’s service.
Emeley. The manor (extent given, shewing effects of pestilence) held of Edmund de Langele, as of the lordship of Wakefeld, by fealty and by service of rendering 13s. 4d. yearly.
Sprotburgh. The manor (extent given, shewing effects of pestilence), with tenements in Wombewell pertaining thereto, held of Philippa, queen of England, as of the honour of Tikhull, by service of a knight’s fee.
Dalton. Four tofts and 4 bovates of land, of which only one toft and one bovate are tenanted owing to the pestilence, held of Edmund de Langele by service of a pair of gilt spurs yearly.

576. NORMAN DARCY.
Writ (fragment). [Apparently a fragment of a writ of certiorari to ascertain whether Norman Darcy held other lands besides the manor of Nocton. See Vol. VIII., No. 315.]
LINCOLN. Inq. taken at Flixburgh, 27 August, 24 Edward III.
Nocton. The manor held jointly with Isabel his wife, by the king’s charter to them and the heirs of their bodies, of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee.
Flixburgh. Two cottages and 7a. land held of the king in chief by homage and fealty.
Flixburgh. The manor, except the said cottages and land, held in service because Roger Oysel, John Darcy, knight, and John son of Richard Darcy held the said manor, except as above, of the said Norman by service of a knight’s fee. The said Norman held the manor of the king in chief by the same service.

LINCOLN. Inq. taken at Nocton, Saturday after St. Andrew, 24 Edward III.
Flixburgh. A messuage and 7a. land.
Nocton. The reversion of a messuage and of a carucate of land, which Hugh Barbdor holds for his life by demise of John Darcy, father of the said Norman.
Croxby. 5s. rent.
Winterton. 2s. rent.
Burtonstather. 12d. rent.
Nocton. The manor (extent given), except 13 knights’ fees and a sixtieth part of a fee, held jointly with Isabel his wife by feoffment of Thomas de Halughton and Roger Belgraunt, sometime vicar of Nocton, to the said Norman and Isabel and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of the said Norman. The extent includes a fishery in the water of Wytham, extending towards Nocton for the length of a league and in breadth to the middle of the river.
He held all the said lands &c., together with the advowson of the church of Flixburgh, of the king in chief and 13 knights’ fees and a sixtieth part of a fee in the same manor as parcel of the fee of Arci, by an eighth, a thirty-second and a hundred and sixtieth part and a hundredth part of a hundred and sixtieth part of the barony of Arcy.
The said Isabel survived the said Norman. The premises descended after the death of Norman to Philip Darcy, his son and heir, who died without an heir of his body in the lifetime of Isabel his mother.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
Norman died on Friday after the Annunciation, 14 Edward III. Isabel died on Thursday after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, (fn. 2) 24 Edward III. There were no heirs of their bodies.
Philip de Lynbury, knight, son and heir of Juliana Darcy, one of the sisters and heirs of the said Norman, aged 30 years and more, and Agnes Darcy, whom Roger de Pedewardyn, knight, married, the other sister and heir of the said Norman, aged 50 years, are his heirs. The said Roger and Agnes have issue.
Writ of certiorari de feodis &c. 4 February, 25 Edward III.

He was seised alone of 13 knights’ fees and a sixtieth part of a fee, viz.:—

All held of the king in chief as parcel of the barony of Arcy by an eighth, a thirty-second and a hundred and sixtieth part and a hundredth part of a hundred and sixtieth part of the said barony, except the premises in Flixburgh, which are held of the king by knight’s service.
The said Isabel survived her husband, so the premises, including the reversion of the manor of Nocton after Isabel’s death, descended to Philip Darcy, son and heir of Norman, who died in the lifetime of Isabel without heir of his body.
The said Norman died on Friday after the Annunciation, 14 Edward III; and Isabel on Thursday after the Exaltation of the Cross, 24 Edward III, without heirs of the bodies of her and Norman.
Philip de Lymbury, knight, son and heir of Juliana Darcy the elder of the sisters of Norman, aged 30 years and more, and Agnes the other sister of Norman, whom Roger de Pedewardyn, knight, married, aged 50 years, are heirs of the said Norman.

Hampstede Cyfrewast. The manor and the hamlet of Aldeworth (extent given) held for his life of the inheritance of John son and heir of Robert de Ferrers, knight, by service of a knight’s fee.
Crokham. 12a. meadow held as above of the same inheritance of the earl of Salisbury by service of 8s. yearly.

He died on 21 December last. Katharine his daughter, wife of Giles de Bello Campo, aged 26 years and more, is his heir.

SOMERSET. Inq. taken at Somerton, Monday after the Conversion of St. Paul, 25 Edward III.
Bruham. The manor, and 24a. pasture and 100a. wood in Cherleton Mussegros held for his life, jointly with Hawise his wife, now deceased, of the grant of John de Solers, by fine levied in the king’s court, with remainders to Giles de Bello Campo and Katharine his wife and the heirs of their bodies, and, such failing, to the right heirs of Hawise. The said manor is held of John de Mohun of Donsterre by knight’s service. The pasture and wood are held by knight’s service of the honour of King’s Cammel, which is in the custody of the prior of Bustlesham, executor of the will of William de Monte Acuto, late earl of Salisbury, by the king’s grant.
Norton. The manor (extent given), with the hundred of Norton, held for his life by the law of England of the king in chief by knight’s service, of the right of Hawise late his wife, by reason of offspring begotten between them, of the inheritance of John de Ferariis, son and heir of Robert de Ferariis, deceased, son and heir of the said Hawise, a minor in the king’s wardship.
Cherleton Mussegros. The manor (extent given), except 24a. pasture and 100a. wood there, held by the law of England as above by knight’s service of the honour of King’s Camel as above.
He died on the feast of St. Thomas the Apostle last. Heir as above, aged 35 years and more.

Alvescot. The manor (extent given) formerly held for life of the inheritance of Richard son of Thomas de Munemuwe, but the latter by fine levied in 17 Edward III granted the reversion after the death of the said John de Bures and Hawise his wife, now long deceased, tenants for life, to Robert de la Beche and Simon de Assh, parson of the church of Lokyng, and the heirs of the said Robert. The said manor is held of the king in chief by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on 21 December last. Heir as above, aged 30 years and more.

GLOUCESTER. Inq. taken at Gloucester, Monday after St. Hilary, 24 Edward III.
Botynton and Longeford. The manors (extent given) held for his life of the gift of John de Solers by fines levied in 3 and 4 Edward III, between the said John de Burs and Hawise his wife and John de Solers, with remainder to Giles de Bello Campo and Katharine his wife and the heirs of their bodies, and further remainder to the right heirs of Hawise. He held a parcel of the manor of Botynton (extent given) of the heirs of the earl of Gloucester by homage, fealty and suit of the court at Tewkesbury every three weeks, a parcel (extent given) of the abbot of Westminster by fealty only, 40a. land therein of the prior of Durhurste by fealty and rendering 7s. yearly, and 20a. land therein of Thomas de Berkeleye of Coburleye and Joan his wife by service of rendering yearly 9s., 1lb. pepper and 1lb. cummin. He held the manor of Longeford of John son of Nicholas by service of a fifth part of a knight’s fee.
Teynton and Kilcote. The manor (extent given) held for life of the king in chief by service of half a knight’s fee.
Bykenore. The manor (extent given) held for life of the inheritance of Hawise de Ferres, his wife, of the king in chief by service of 15s. yearly at Newenham.
He died at Botynton on Wednesday the morrow of St. Thomas the Apostle, 24 Edward III.
The reversion of the manors of Botynton and Longeford belongs as above to the aforesaid Giles and Katharine.
John son of Robert de Ferrar’, aged 19 years, is heir of the said Hawise de Ferres.
Letter of Walter Dastyn, escheator in co. Gloucester, to the chancellor, stating that, John de Burs, deceased, having held the manor of Bykenore and other manors in his bailiwick of the king in chief, he went to that manor to take it into the king’s hand as an escheat, as the custom is, whereupon Walter de Vaghan, deputy of Guy de Bryan, keeper of the forest of Dene and the castle of St. Briavel’s, came saying that the said manor was held of the said castle and that the escheat thereof belonged to the said Guy as keeper and would not allow the escheator to enter upon the said manor or to make the king’s profit thereof. NORTHUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Morpath, 6 March, 24 Edward III.
Callerdon. The manor, held jointly with Agnes his wife, who survives, of the king in chief by homage and fealty and by service of 13s. 11d. yearly by the hands of the sheriff for the ward of the king’s castle of Newcastle upon Tyne on Sunday after St. Cuthbert in March, and also 14 1/2d. yearly for cornage by the hands of the sheriff.
Brampton and Brandon. The manors, held jointly as above of William de Felton, the elder, by fealty and service of a sore fish-hawk (nisi) yearly at the feast of St. Peter’s Chains.
Biddelesdene. A moiety of the manor, held jointly as above of Gilbert de Umframvile, earl of Angos, by homage and fealty and by service of 13s. 4d. yearly at the feast of St. Cuthbert in September.
Duxfeld. The manor and five husband lands and 50a. in demesne held jointly as above of Robert de Herle, knight, by fealty and service of 3s. 4d. yearly to the ward of the aforesaid castle.

Writ, after the death of the said Margaret, who held certain lands &c. for life of the inheritance of the said Neal, who died a minor in the king’s wardship. 8 March, 24 Edward III.

Woppingethorn in the parish of Stenyngg. A messuage &c., 150a. arable, 50a. several heath-land pasture, 12s. 6 1/2d. rent of five free tenants and a bondman (other tenants, who brought the rent up to 60s. formerly, being dead and their holdings standing empty), 10a. meadow, 12a. wood and a park called ‘Gardyn,’ containing two and a half acres, held as above, service not stated.
La Sele. Tenements called ‘Wowode’ and ‘Totyngton’ in the parish (extent given) held as above, service not stated.
She held no other lands &c. of the king in chief of the said inheritance in the county.
She died on 24 September last. William Bouet, aged 14 years at the feast of St. Martin last, is brother and heir of the said Neal.

CUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Egremont, 30 September, 24 Edward III.
Egremont. A third part of the manor (extent given), held jointly with Elizabeth de Haveryngton, deceased, late his wife, sometime the wife of Robert de Haveryngton, knight, to them and the heirs male of her body, by virtue of a fine levied 17 Edward III, of the king in chief by homage and service of a third part of a knight’s fee. The said Walter outlived the said Elizabeth and so held the said third part for his life by virtue of the said fine. The extent includes 40 free tenants in the borough of Egremont, who hold their burgages by fealty by suit at the three chief courts of Egremont and by service of reaping with the lord in autumn, one day for each burgage, being fed by the lord, or by paying for each work deficient 1d.; a third part of toll and market in the said borough; a third part of an enclosed park; a third part of a fishery in the Irte and a fishery in the Eygne; third parts of corn mills at Egremont and Bekhermet and a third part of a quarter of a corn mill at Dreg; a moiety of a fulling mill at Thoroldwath and a corn mill and a fulling mill at Eynerdal.
He died on the feast of St. Lawrence last. Walter de Bermyngeham, his son, under age, is his heir as to his lands elsewhere in England and Ireland, but not of the third part of the aforesaid manor. Of this, John de Haveryngton of Aldyngham, son of the aforesaid Elizabeth, is her heir and of full age.

Flete, Multon, Beausolace and Skirbek. A third part of the manors and two messuages and a third part of a third part of a garden in Flete and the advowson of the church of Algerkirk, with the knights’ fees thereto belonging, of which the said Walter and Elizabeth his wife, who is dead, held the premises in Flete, the third part of the manor of Flete and the advowson of the church of Algerkirk and the third part of the manor of Multon, except two messuages, 59a. land, 30a. meadow, 20a. pasture and 4a. marsh therein, to them and the heirs male of their bodies by fine levied between them and Maurice de Bermyngeham, parson of the church of Algerkirk. They held the two messuages and premises above excepted in Multon, and the third parts of the manors of Beausolace and Skirbek for their lives, with remainder to Robert son of Robert de Haveryngton and the heirs male of his body by the same fine. The third part of the manor of Flete and other premises in Flete are held of Henry, earl of Lancaster, by homage and fealty only. The third part of the manor of Multon is held of the prior of Spaldyng, by service of 40s. yearly. The third part of the manor of Beausolace is held of Richard de Welby and his parceners by fealty only. The third part of the manor of Skirbek is held of the earl of Richemund by fealty only. The two messuages &c. in Multon are held of the prior of Spaldyng by fealty only.
He died on Tuesday the feast of St. Lawrence last. Walter son of the said Walter and Elizabeth, aged 13 years at the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist last, is his heir.
Endorsed with the extents of a third part respectively of the manors of Flete, Multon, Beausolace and Skirbek.
Writ to J. archbishop of Dublin, chancellor of Ireland, directing him to issue writs under the king’s seal used in Ireland to the escheator there touching the lands &c. of the said Walter in that country, 18 September, 24 Edward III.
Endorsed:—This writ came to the chancellor on 1 February, 25 Edward III. Before the arrival of this writ a writ of diem clausit extremum respecting the said Walter issued from the chancery of Ireland, directed to John de Carreu, escheator of Ireland, by virtue whereof the said escheator afterwards returned into the said chancery certain inquisitions, together with the said writ, the tenors of which are sent herewith under the great seal used in Ireland.

Nathirlagh, Athnedeshe and Lekdoun. A third part of the manors, held for his life by the law of England of the inheritance of Elizabeth, sometime his wife, the reversion whereof belongs to John son of Robert de Haveryngton, son and heir of the said Elizabeth, by service of doing suit at the county of Limerick. The said John is of full age, at what time the jury know not, because he is now in England.
KILKENNY. Inq. taken at Kenlys, 10 November, 24 Edward III.
Kenlys. The manor, held of the king in chief of new feoffment, service not known.
Schanboth. A messuage and three carucates of land held of the abbess of St. Mary’s, Kilkilyn, by service of one mark yearly with suit of court.
Walter de Birmyngham, his son, is his heir, whose age the jury know not because he dwells in England.

A third part of the manor held jointly with Elizabeth his wife, who is dead, for their lives, with remainder to Robert son of Robert de Haveryngton and the heirs male of his body by fine levied between the said Walter and Elizabeth, plaintiffs, and Maurice de Bermyngeham, parson of the church of Aldirkirke, deforciant. It is held of the heirs of William Giffard as of his manor of Hadeleye by service of a seventh part of a knight’s fee.
He died on Tuesday the feast of St. Laurence last. The aforesaid Robert is of full age.
Inq. taken at the same time and place concerning knights’ fees and advowsons.
Haukesdon. The advowson of the church held by the above fine, of the heirs of William Giffard, as above, service not known.
He held no knights’ fees in the county.
The following document has been found and added to this inquisition.
Notification that John de Haveryngton comes in person to do his homage for the third part of the manor of Egremont, and request that he be presented to the king, that the king may receive his homage and further signify his pleasure. This writ is attached to the inquisition which follows, but there is another writ of 20 October, enrolled on the Fine Roll, ordering the escheator to take into the king’s hands the two cottages and 7a., whereof no mention is made in the Inquisition Post Mortem [Vol. VIII., No. 315], and enquire as to who had enjoyed them since the death of the deceased. The Saturday after St. Andrew is before 16 December.
  • 2. On the Fine Roll there is a writ of Diem clausit extremum after her death dated 6 October, but there is no inquisition corresponding.
