PREFACE

The object of publishing these Journals independently of the Calendar of State Papers Colonial has been explained in the first volume issued (1704–9). The Journal is now carried down to May 1782, when the Board was liquidated, and this will consequently be the last volume of the series. It contains, as in preceding volumes, a list of Governors of the various plantations, now reduced by the secession of the mainland colonies, the dates of the appointment of Commissions for the period under review, and also an alphabetical list of Commissioners for the whole period (1714–1782) with the dates of their appointment and retirement or death. In view of the number of ships mentioned in the text, it has been thought advisable to put them in an appendix to the index. This volume has been printed under the supervision of Mr. K. H. Ledward, an Assistant Keeper of the Records, who has also compiled the Index.
