Thursday, May 1. Present:—Mr. Ashe, Mr. Plumer, Mr. Pitt, Mr. Leveson Gower.

South Carolina.

Read a letter from Mr. Glen, Governor of South Carolina, dated the 11th of February, 1745, giving some account of the present state of that province, and of the good friendship subsisting betwixt them and their neighbouring Indians.

Massachusets.

The draught of a letter to Mr. Shirley, Governor of the Massachusets Bay, in answer to several received from him since their last letter, having been laid before the Board, they made some alterations therein, and agreed to consider of the same at another opportunity.

Friday, May 2. Present:—Lord Monson, Mr. Brudenell, Mr. Plumer, Mr. Leveson Gower.

Massachusets.

The draught of a letter to Mr. Shirley, mentioned in the preceding minute, having been reconsidered, was agreed to, and ordered to be transcribed.

Miscellanies.

The Secretary laid before the Board an account of the incidental charges of this office, from Michaelmas to Christmas, 1744, amounting in the whole to £610 4s. 7d., and a letter to the Lords of the Treasury, desiring payment thereof, and of the salaries due to the Secretary and under officers for the same time, was agreed to and signed.

Tuesday, May 6. Present:—Lord Monson, Mr. Plumer, Mr. Pitt.

South and North Carolina.

Upon application from Mr. Thomas Smith, Deputy Auditor of the Plantations, for copies of such parts of his Majesty's instructions to his Governors of South and North Carolina, as relates to grants of land, and the payment of the quit rents in those provinces, the Board ordered that copies of such parts of the said instructions, as relate thereto, should be accordingly prepared.

Massachusets.

The draught of a letter to Mr. Shirley, ordered to be transcribed by the minute of Friday last, was laid before the Board and signed.

Wednesday, May 7. Present:—Lord Monson, Mr. Plumer, Mr. Pitt, Mr. Leveson Gower, Mr. Grenville.

Leeward Islands.

The draught of a letter to General Mathew, Governor of the Leeward Islands, since the Board's last to him, having been prepared and laid before the Board, was agreed to, and ordered to be transcribed.

South Carolina.

The draught of a letter to Mr. Glen, Governor of South Carolina, was likewise laid before the Board, and agreed to be reconsidered to-morrow.

Leeward Islands.

Read a letter from General Mathew, Governor of the Leeward Islands, dated Antigua, February 11th, 1745–6, transmitting publick papers, and recommending Mr. John Thomlinson, Esquire, to be of the Council in Antigua, in the room of Thomas Watkins, Esquire, deceased.

South Carolina.

The draught of a letter to Mr. Glen, mentioned in yesterday's minutes, having been reconsidered, was agreed to and ordered to be transcribed.

Friday, May 9. Present:—Mr. Brudenell, Mr. Plumer, Mr. Pitt, Mr. Leveson Gower.

Leeward Islands.

The draught of a letter to General Mathew, Governor of the Leeward Islands, agreed to by the minutes of the 7th instant, was laid before the Board and signed;

South Carolina.

As was likewise the draught of a letter to Mr. Glen, Governor of South Carolina, agreed to by the minutes of yesterday.

Tuesday, May 13. Present:—Lord Monson, Mr. Plumer, Mr. Pitt.

Trade.

Read a letter from Mr. Wood, Secretary to the Commissioners of his Majesty's Customs, dated the 10th of May, 1746, with a copy of the Inspector General's leidger of imports and exports for the year 1741.

South Carolina.

Read a letter from Joseph Wragg, Esquire, one of the Council of South Carolina, dated at Charles Town, the 7th of February last, signifying his inability to attend the business of the Council, and desiring to resign his seat at that Board, and that their lordships would recommend to his Majesty some other gentleman to succeed him.

Ordered that the draught of a representation to his Majesty be prepared, proposing Alexander Vanderdussen, Esquire, to supply the vacancy made in the Council of South Carolina, by the resignation of the said Joseph Wragg, Esquire.

New York.

The draught of a letter to Mr. Clinton, Governor of New York, in answer to those received from him, having been laid before the Board and agreed to, was ordered to be transcribed.

Jamaica.

The draught of a letter to Mr. Trelawney, Governor of Jamaica, in answer to those received from him, having been laid before the Board, was agreed to and ordered to be transcribed.

Wednesday, May 14. Present:—Lord Monson, Mr. Plumer, Mr. Pitt.

Jamaica.

The draught of a letter to Mr. Trelawney, Governor of Jamaica, mentioned in the preceding minute, was laid before the Board and signed.

South Carolina.

The draught of a representation to his Majesty recommending Alexander Vanderdussen, Esquire, to be of the Council in South Carolina, ordered by a minute of yesterday, was laid before the Board and signed.

Virginia.

The draught of a letter to Colonel Gooch, Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, in answer to those received from him, was laid before the Board, agreed to and signed.

New Jersey.

The draught of a letter to Mr. Morris, Governor of New Jersey, in answer to one received from him, was laid before the Board, agreed to and ordered to be transcribed.

Thursday, May 15. Present:—Lord Monson, Mr. Plumer, Mr. Pitt, Mr. Leveson Gower.

New York.

The draught of a letter to Mr. Clinton, Governor of New York, ordered to be transcribed by the minutes of Tuesday last, was laid before the Board and signed.

New Jersey.

As was also the draught of a letter to Mr. Morris, Governor of New Jersey, ordered to be transcribed by a minute of yesterday.

Nova Scotia.

The draught of a letter to Lieutenant Colonel Mascarene, in answer to those that have been received from him, was laid before the Board, agreed to and signed.

Tuesday, May 27. Present:—Lord Monson, Mr. Plumer, Mr. Pitt, Mr. Leveson Gower.

Bermudas.

Read a letter from Mr. Jones, President of the Council and Commander in Chief of Bermudas, to the Board, dated April 3rd, 1746, transmitting minutes of Council, from the 5th of August, 1745, to the 4th of March, 1745–6; and minutes of Council in Assembly, from the 5th of August to the 17th of October, 1745.

Ordered that the draught of an answer to the same be prepared, which was done, agreed to and signed.

Plantations General.

Ordered that a postscript be added to the letters lately wrote to the several Governors of his Majesty's Plantations in America, desiring them to send constantly to the Board their observations on the Acts which they pass, and their reasons for passing them, as they are directed to do by their instructions.

New Jersey.

The Board took into consideration an Act, passed at New Jersey, in December, 1743, subjecting Real Estates in that Province to the Payment of Debts, and directing the Sheriff in his proceedings thereon.

Ordered that the Secretary write to Mr. Fane, to desire his attendance here any morning that shall be convenient to him, in order for the Board to have some discourse with him on the subject of the said Act.

Miscellanies.

The Secretary laid before the Board an estimate of the expence requisite for the fitting up the office in the Cockpit, over the Treasury, for the use of this Board. Ordered that the Secretary send a copy of the said estimate, in a letter to Mr. Scrope, and desire him to lay the same before the Lords Commissioners of his Majesty's Treasury, for their orders thereupon.

Friday, May 30. Present:— Mr. Plumer, Mr. Pitt, Mr. Leveson Gower, Mr. Grenville.

New Jersey.

Mr. Fane attending, as appointed by the preceding minute, the Board had some discourse with him on the subject of the Act therein mentioned, and some doubts arising upon a clause in the said Act, ordered that the draught of a letter be prepared to Mr. Morris, Governor of New Jersey, desiring his opinion upon and explanation of the said clause, with his reasons for passing that Act.

Barbados.

Read a letter from Sir Thomas Robinson, Governor of Barbados, to the Board, dated March 7th, 1745–6, transmitting the addresses of the Grand Jury, and of the Governor and Council to his Majesty, on account of the rebellion, promising speedily to transmit his answer to the articles of complaint exhibited against him, and renewing his recommendation of Mr. Lascelles to be of the Council.
