Tuesday, August 23. Present:—Colonel Bladen, Mr. Brudenell, Mr. Plumer, Mr. Keene.

Nova Scotia.

The Board having been summoned to meet extraordinarily, on a letter received from Mr. Weston, wrote by order of the Lords Justices, dated the 11th instant, directing the Board to send their Excellencies an account of the present state and condition of the Colony of Nova Scotia; and General Philipps, with two officers of the regiment, viz.: Captain Bradstreet and Captain Mitford, attending, as desired, their lordships had some discourse with them upon the state and condition of the said Colony, and a representation to their Excellencies, having been prepared thereupon, was agreed to and signed.

Read a letter from Mr. Clarke, Lieutenant Governor of New York, dated the 19th June, 1743, and ordered that a letter to his Grace the Duke of Newcastle, for enclosing an extract thereof, as far as relates to the state of the Colony, be prepared, which was accordingly agreed to, transcribed and signed.

The following papers were transmitted with Mr. Clarke's said letter, viz.:—

No. 1. Copy of a letter from Lieutenant Governor Clarke to Lieutenant Governor Gooch, dated the 3rd January, 1742–3, with copy of Colonel Patton's letter to him inclosed, relating to a skirmish with the Indians.
No. 2. Copy of a letter from Lieutenant Governor Clarke to the Commissioners for Indian affairs, dated 5th April, 1743, about the action between the Indians and some of the inhabitants of Virginia.
No. 3. Copy of a letter from the Commissioners for Indian affairs, to Lieutenant Governor Clarke, dated 20th March, 1742–3, with copy of their minutes, relating to a conference with the Indians, concerning the skirmish at Virginia. [Sent before No. 2 was received.]
No. 4. Copy of a letter from the Commissioners for Indian Affairs to Lieutenant Governor Clarke, dated April 18th, 1743, on their not sending the interpreter to the Six Nations, as directed in his letter of the 5th April, about the skirmish at Virginia.
No. 5. Copy of a letter from Lieutenant Governor Clarke, to the Commissioners for Indian Affairs, dated the 27th of April, 1743, to send the interpreter to the Six Nations, on the affair of the hostilities committed at Virginia.
No. 6. Copy of a letter from Lieutenant Governor Clarke to Colonel Gooch, Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, dated May 2nd, 1743, acquainting him that he had sent the interpreter to the Six Nations, about their pretensions and skirmish.
No. 7. Minutes of the Commissioners of Indian Affairs, May 2nd, 1743, their proceeding with their message to the Indians, and the Indians' answer, relating to the skirmish in Virginia.
No. 8. Copy of a letter from the Commissioners of Indian Affairs to the Honourable George Clarke, Esquire, dated 30th May, 1743, concerning their message to and proceedings with the Indians, in the affair of the skirmish at Virginia.
No. 9. Copy of a letter from Lieutenant Governor Clarke to Lieutenant Governor Gooch, dated the 16th June, 1743, giving an account of his negotiation with the Indians at the skirmish at Virginia.
Copy of a letter from General Oglethorpe to Mr. Clarke, Lieutenant Governor of New York, dated at Frederica in Georgia, the 22nd April, 1743.
Copy of an affidavit of John Griggs, who was late a prisoner at the Havannah. Sworn the 24th May, 1743, before the Lieutenant Governor of New York.

Ordered that the three Acts be sent to Mr. Fane, for his opinion thereon, in point of law.

New Jersey.

Read a letter from Mr. Hamilton, eldest Councillor in the province of New Jersey, to the Board, dated at Perth Amboy, the 9th June, 1743, relating to a dispute with Colonel Morris, Governor of that province, concerning the profits of Government during Mr. Hamilton's presidentship; and inclosing the case stated between them, and reasons why Mr. Hamilton is rightfully entituled to the Government of New Jersey, notwithstanding the claim of Colonel Morris. Ordered that an answer be wrote to Mr. Hamilton's said letter, by the Deputy Secretary, in the absence of Mr. Hill.
