1 Oct. Otho, C. IX., 1. B.M.	191. [540.] THE GRAND MASTER OF RHODES (EMERY D'AMBOISE) to HENRY VIII.
	Has received his letter giving information of his accession, and of his late father's wish to have assisted in the expedition against the Turks and Saracens. Is glad to hear of a similar desire in the new King. Hopes no obstacle will occur to prevent it. The Sultan has lately sent a fleet of 25 sail, under the command of his nephew, to Jazia, in Syria, and is very busy making preparation to annoy Christendom. Speaks of the Sultan's building of a fleet on the Red Sea to expel the [Portuguese] from India (? ut ex ... gallenses propulsaret), and an Alexandrian having a conference with the Turk. To crush the danger in the bud the Christians despatched a fleet to Jazia, which defeated the army of the Sultan in the Bay of Scanderona, on the 23rd Aug. The Sultan is greatly enraged, and is endeavouring to bring the Turks against them. They are shut up in a corner in the midst of the Infidels, and require the King's aid. 	Particulars of the account of Sir Hugh Conwey, treasurer of Calais, appointed by pat. 17 June 19 Hen. VII., from Mich. 24 Hen. VII. to Mich. 1 Hen. VIII.
	i. RECEIPTS:—
	(1) Rents of assise within the town of Calais, viz., from Thomas Englysshe, collector of rents and farms of freeholders, 135l. 3s. 5d. st. and one pair of gilt spurs and two red roses of Lancaster (as shown by inq. of 4 Feb. 6 Hen. VI.); beyond 43s. 4d. for certain rents lost by decay and forfeiture of houses, &c. (specified), including an inn, &c., in "le South Westcorner" of a square called "Northwestcorner," a void piece of ground leased to the burgesses, and the hall called "Le Sale de Heryngriche" now reserved for the King's artillery and "springald'." Farm of tenements in the town leased for term of years, viz., 82 tenements described with names of tenants and former tenants and particulars of the leases (no total given).
	(2) From John Byngham, customer at the Lanternegate for the King's custom of wools and woolfells, of merchandise coming by cocket out of England, and also wine, beer, ale and other victuals, viz.:—From 4,881½ sacks, 6 cloves of wool (in 1,955 sarplers, 66 pokes, 273 poketts) entering Calais from divers ports of England, from Mich. 24 Hen. VII. to Mich. 1 Hen. VIII., at 4d. for each sack weight, 81l. 3s. 6½d.; from 599,400 woolfells from England, at 4d. the hundred, 99l. 18s.; from entry of leather, sheepskins, calfskins, lambskins and coney skins sold within the town and leaving it, 11s. 4¼d.; from entry and exit of divers petty merchandise, 42l. 14s. 8½d.; from entry of divers things, such as woollen cloth, wool-fells called shorlings, lambfells, &c., by cocket out of England, 41l. 2s. 11¾d.; from exit of leather, lambfells and fleeces called shorlynges and morlinges and of calfskins of the growth of the country brought to the town and thence carried out, 16s. 3½d.; from entry of divers victuals, such as wine, beer, ale, &c., as well with cocket as without, and as well out of England as from the marches of Calais, Normandy, Gascony, Picardy, Britanny, Flanders, Brabant and elsewhere, to be expended mainly in Calais. 7l. 17s. 10½d.; from entry of divers victuals and fruits, as well by cocket as without, from England and elsewhere, carried to Calais and there customed, 8l. 10s. 2d.
	(3) From Richard Smythe, customer, and receiver of the King's moneys arising from the exit of wools, hides and woolfells sold in Calais and going out thence, viz.:—From 6,211½ sacks, 42 cloves of wool in 2,039 sarplers, 26 pokes and 141 poketts, at 8d. the sack weight, 207l. 16d.; from 2,395 cloves of wool called "breklyng," at 1d. for ten, 19s. 11½d.; from 421,039 woolfells, at 4d. the hundred, 70l. 3s. 5½d.; from shorlings, lambfells, hides of leather and calf fells of the growth of the country, nil, because John Byngham, customer at Lanterngate, answers for them.
	(4) From Thomas Burdon, mayor and escheator of Calais, of the issues of his office from 4 Aug. 23 Hen. VII. to 4 Aug. 1 Hen. VIII., viz., for fines and amercements for bloodshed, in the King's Court, 40s.; for the fifth part of the sale of goods (domorum, a slip for bonorum) and chattels of aliens withdrawing from the town, sold without licence, also of goods of aliens dying without heirs, and of escheats, 4l. 19s. 4½d.
	(5) From Sir Wm. Meryng, marshal of Calais, from fines and amercements for bloodshed, in the Lieutenant's Court, 30s., nil, because it is answered for under heading of the Lieutenant's allowances, &c.
	(6) From Alan Redmayn, by pat. 21 Feb. 20 Hen. VII. appointed searcher in the port of Calais, for issues of his office, as gold and silver being carried out of England without licence, merchandise brought without cocket or payment of custom in England, default of the customer at the Lantern gate, plate and jewels found upon divers persons, and forfeitures, 8l. 3s.
	(7) Money received from Wm. Nanfan, [made] collector of fines of aliens inhabiting Calais, called "bilmoney," by Henry VII.'s assent to Sir John Wylshir, controller, viz., from Mich. 24 Hen. VII. to Easter following, 20s. 2¾d.; and for the following half year nil, because by pat. 30 June, 1 Hen. VIII., the receipt is granted to Ric. Chalner free of account.
	(8) From John Cokeson, by pat. 4 Nov. 11 Hen. VII. appointed collector of anchorage, pontage, wharfage, headsilver and other petty customs in the ports of Calais and Newhaven for an annual payment of 40l. Fl. which, reckoning 30s. of Flanders money at 20s. English, is 26l. 13s. 4d.
	(9) From Richard Whethill, s. and h. of Adrian and Margaret Whethill, dec., to whom by pat. 2 March 19 Hen. VII. the two windmills upon le Castlehill and the ground called Millhill to the south of them, were leased for 60 years, 10l.
	(10) From Andrew Hawardine, bailiff and receiver of the issues of the entire Scunage of the town of Calais and of the whole island of Colne, for numerous royalties (specified) therein, 106l. 14s. 11d.; and for fines for bloodshed 40s.
	(11) From the castlery (castellum in this, castellania in § 2), of Hampnes, as issues of lands within the lordship of Hampnes leased to Wm. lord Mountjoy, 37l. 13s. 4d.; for sale of tithe corn and lambs, nil, because, by pat. 27 June 1 Edw. IV. these are granted to the rector of Hampnes Well; for other royalties (because answered for in the above 37l. 13s. 4d.) nil.
	(12) From the castlery of Marke and Oye (the two entire lordships, including wrecks and customs, being leased to Thomas Prout, Robert Mountgomery, Thomas Bote and other tenants, at a rent of 1,320l. Fl., by indenture 13 June 15 Hen. VII., to be paid to the King's hands, and the tithes having, by pat. 27 July 1 Edw IV., been granted to the rectors of the parish churches), nil.
	(13) From the castlery of Guisnes (the issues of the whole county being leased to Sir Nicholas Vaux for 533l. st. rent, by indenture 12 March 22 Hen. VII., and the tithes granted to the rectors), nil.
	(14) From the castlery of Bavelingham (the entire lordship being similarly leased to Vaux, for 40l., and the tithes to the rectors), nil.
	(15) From the castlery of Sandegate (the entire lordship, including wrecks and customs being similarly leased to Vaux, for 48l. 6s. 8d.), nil.
	(16) From the King's change (cambium) within the town of Calais, nil, because no one would take it to farm or keep it to the King's profit.
	(17) From cinerage of money made in Calais, nil, because no money was made.
	(18) From fee of the King's seal lately in the keeping of Sir Giles Dawbney, lieutenant, for sealing safeconducts to strangers and enemies for herring fishing and victualling, nil, because none were sealed.
	(19) From the fee of the other seal in the keeping of the Treasurer for renewal and making of deeds upon lands within the town, 4l.
	(20) From increment of any payments made because of the money current, nil.
	(21) From thirds of the profit of raids of war made by the lieutenant and retinue of the town and castle, (fn. 1) or from thirds of thirds of such profit of raids by the said lieutenant and the soldiers of Guisnes, Hampnes and Ruysbancq. nil, because no such raids were made.

	i. RECEIPTS:—
	From the Merchants of the Staple, for payment of wages and rewards of the deputy, officers and soldiers, in part payment of 10,022l. 4s. 8d., part of the custom and subsidy of wools and woolfells and fells called shorling and morling, from divers ports of England shipped to Calais payable by Act of Parliament, 19 Hen. VII., for 16 years from 6 April 19 Hen. VII., for the year ending 6 Oct. 1 Hen. VIII., 6,276l. 9s. 3½d. st., and 270l. st. (fn. 2)
	ii. PAYMENTS:—
	(1) Retinue of the Lord Lieutenant of the town of Calais:—To the King's lieutenant of the town for wages at 6s. 8d. a day, 121l. 13s. 4d.; for his special reward of 100 mks. a quarter, 266l. 13s. 4d.; for wages of one knight (miles) at 2s. a day, 36l. 10s., and a special reward of 20 mks. a year, 13l. 6s. 8d.; for wages of five men at arms on horseback at 12d. a day, 91l. 5s., and rewards of 20 mks. each, 66l. 13s. 4d.; for wages of 12 archers on horseback, at 8d., 146l.; total, 742l. 20d. From which deduct from the wages of the lieutenant and soldiers aforesaid, and retinue aforesaid, for the fraternities of Jesu and St. George yearly, 68s. (which is paid); leaving in the hands of the Staplers for money for the victuals (denar victual') of the said lieutenant and retinue 41l. 4s. 6d., and 697l. 9s. 2d., which similarly remains in hand because of the vacancy of the said lieutenant (fn. 3) and retinue and is to be paid to the King. There also remains in hand for the special reward assigned to the lieutenant for his costs about the exploration of rumours and otherwise 98l. 18s. 3½d. beyond the 5l. 16s. 4½d. deducted therefrom for victual money aforesaid.
	(2) Town of Calais:—Wages of two knights, viz., the Deputy and Marshal, each at 2s. a day, 73l., and special rewards at 20 mks. each, 26l. 13s. 4d.; wages of 21 men at arms on horseback, at 12d. a day, 383l. 5s., and their special rewards of 20 mks. each, 280l.; wages of 18 archers on horseback, at 8d. a day, 219l.; wages of 200 men at arms on foot, at 8d. a day, 2,433l. 6s. 8d.; wages of 200 archers on foot, at 6d. a day, 1,825l.; total, 5,240l. 5s. Whereof deduct for victual money, 291l. 2s. 6d.; for wages and rewards of divers of the soldiers aforesaid vacant and absent, 78l. 7s. 11¼d.; for deductions from their wages in fines and amercements for bloodshed, 30s.; for 40 days each from divers of the soldiers newly entering, 16l. 13s. 4d.; from the advantage of divers men at arms, horse and foot, with four "daywacches" and one "cryer" which the lord lieutenant lately took out of the same yearly, with wages of the last day of the year of the whole retinue, 174l. 9s. 9d.; which (deductions) remain in hands of the Staplers; and so is paid 4,678l. 17d.
	(3) Retinue of the Treasurer:—Wages of 18 gunners (arbalistarii) at 10d. a day, 273l. 15s.; and 22 at 8d., 267l. 13s. 4d.; 5 men at arms on foot at 8d., 60l. 16s. 8d.; 5 archers on foot at 6d., 45l. 12s. 6d.; 5 men at arms on horseback at 12d., 91l. 5s., with their rewards of 20 mks. each, 66l. 13s. 4d.; 5 archers on horseback at 8d., 60l. 16s. 8d.; 15 masons at 8d., 182l. 10s.; 20 carpenters at 8d., 243l. 6s. 8d.; one plumber at 8d., 12l. 3s. 4d.; one tiler at 8d., 12l. 3s. 4d.; one smith at 12d., 18l. 5s.; one purveyor at 8d., 12l. 3s. 4d.; one of the artillery at 8d., 12l. 3s. 4d.; one master mason at 12d., one master carpenter at 12d., one master of the artillery at 12d., one yeoman of the said master of artillery at 6d. For the pension of the Carmelite Friars in Calais, 13l. 6s. 8d. Total, 1,436l. 11s. 8d. From which deduct for victual money, 79l. 16s. 3d.; also deduct from the wages, &c., of divers of the above because retained at lesser wages, &c., than formerly and also because of the vacancy and absence of the 5 men at arms on horseback, the 5 archers on horseback, 3 masons, 5 carpenters, one master of artillery and his yeoman, one purveyor and one of the artillery aforesaid, 636l. 19s. 7d.; also for wages of divers carpenters, masons and soldiers vacant and absent, 30l. 4s. 0½d.; which sums deducted remain in the hands of the Staplers to the King's use. And so is paid 689l. 11s. 9½d.
	(4) To Sir John Pecche, appointed by pat. 17 May 1 Hen. VIII., King's lieutenant of the tower of Ruysbancq in Picardy, with the same number of soldiers as Sir John Fortescue, late lieutenant there, had, for his own wages and those of one man at arms, each at 12d. a day, and 16 men at arms or gunners (balistarii) at 8d. from 16 May to 6 Oct. 1 Hen. VIII., with special rewards at 20 mks. a year to himself and the said one man at arms and 2d. a day to the rest, 113l. 8s. 9½d.
	(5) To the lieutenant's deputy of the castle of Calais for his wages at 2s. a day and reward at 100s. a quarter, and for wages of 29 men at arms on foot and 20 archers on foot, 591l. 16s. 8d.; from which deduct victual money, 32l. 17s. 7d.; leaving in the hands of the Staple, 558l. 19s. 1d. to the King's use.
	(6) To Richard Knyght, appointed by pat. 26 July 16 Hen. VII., King's lieutenant of the tower of Ruysbancq, with one man at arms, &c. (as above), from 6 Oct. 24 Hen. VII. to 17 May, 1 Hen. VIII., 186l. 7s. 9d. From which deducting victual money, 10l. 7s. 1d., and wages and rewards according to a certain composition made with the King, 121l. 12s. 9d., there remains 54l. 7s. 11d. which is paid to Richard Blount, one of the executors of the said Knyght, dec., by virtue of a privy seal dated Greenwich, 6 May, 2 Hen. VIII.
	(7) To the King's lieutenant of Ruysbancq, &c. (items as in Art. 4) from 16 May to 6 Oct. 1 Hen. VIII., 113l. 8s. 9½d. which remains in hand.
	(8) To Wm. Blount lord Mountjoy, by pat. 26 June 18 Hen. VII., lieutenant of the castle of Hampnes, for his own wages at 12d. a day and those of one archer on horseback, of 17 men at arms on foot at 8d. and 22 archers on foot at 6d., and a special reward to himself of 20 mks. a year, 451l. 6s. 8d.; of which, deducting victual money 25l. 18d., and wages and rewards according to a certain composition made with the King, 200l., which deductions remain with the Staplers to the King's use, there is paid 226l. 5s. 2d.
	(9) To Sir Nicholas Vaux, by pat. 8 July, 17 Hen. VII., lieutenant of the castle of Guisnes, for his own wages at 2s. a day, and those of 49 men at arms on foot at 8d., 50 archers on foot at 6d., his own special reward at 10 mks. a quarter, and his allowance by order of Henry VII. for the exploration of rumors and other business with adversaries at 50 mks. a year, 1,148l. 18s. 4d.; of which, deducting victual money 63l. 16s. 6d., wages and rewards according to a composition with the King, 333l. 6s. 8d., and also 127l. 0s. 2d. in full payment of the farm of the lordships of Guysnes, Sandgate and Bavelyngham, which deductions remain with the Staplers to the King's use, there is paid 624l. 14s. 11½d.
	(10) To Sir Andrew Wyndesor, keeper of the Great Wardrobe, by virtue of an Act of the Parliament of 21 Jan. 1 Hen. VIII., for the Wardrobe, 270l.

Has written so often lately and received no letters from James that he now sends his servant to the King with a memorial of the injury done his jurisdiction. Understands that the bp. of Aberdeen is raising new lawsuits in the Rota touching the archdeaconry which James conferred upon the writer's tutor (monitori). Hopes the King will relieve him from litigation, which he would do if he considered the pains taken by the tutor in the writer's behalf in Scotland and in Italy. Begs James will confer any greater benefice on him that may fall void in the archbishopric of St. Andrews. The writer would desire to have him within his jurisdiction for his fidelity and zeal. As the servants of others are endowed with the archbishop's minor benefices, thinks it unreasonable that his own should not have enough to live upon. Requests therefore that the patronage of those benefices may be given to the Prior or Archdeacon of St. Andrews, who will confer them only upon his own servants. If anything moderate should fall vacant in the meantime, requests that it may be given to the present messenger, who has suffered many things in the writer's service. Padua, 22 Oct.
