John de Cotome, skinner, came before Luke de Haveryng, Chamberlain, Friday after the Feast of St. Katherine [25 Nov.], 4 Edward II. [A.D. 1310], and acknowledged himself bound to William de Paris, draper (draperio), in the sum of 20 marks; to be paid, viz., one moiety at the Feast of the Purification and the other at the Feast of the Annunciation; and unless, &c.

(Afterwards, on 6 April, anno 4, came Henry Faukes, the valet of the said William, and acknowledged satisfaction, and therefore the recognizance is cancelled.)

[A.D. 1310], came Thomas le White and Roger le White and acknowledged themselves jointly and severally bound to Thomas de Foxton, corder, in the sum of 60s.; to be paid by quarterly instalments of 7s. 6d., commencing at Midsummer; and unless, &c.

Friday after the Feast of Epiphany [6 Jan.], 4 Edward II. [A.D. 1310-11], came Roger le Viroler before Luke de Haveryng, the Chamberlain, and acknowledged himself bound to Hugh de Waltham, clerk, (fn. 7) in the sum of 40s.; to be paid on the first Sunday in Lent, &c.; and unless, &c.

Friday after the Feast of St. Hillary [13 Jan.] came Richard de Normanton, Thomas de Donewiche, and John de Honylane, skinners, and acknowledged themselves jointly and severally bound to John de Preston and Nicholas de Rokele, corders, in the sum of £6 18s.; to be paid on the Sunday in mid-Lent, and unless, &c. Given for enrolment 14d.

(Afterwards, viz., on 2 April, came Richard de Normanton, and paid the aforesaid John and Nicholas 46s.)

Saturday after the Feast of St. Hillary [13 Jan.] came Richard de Bery, skinner, and acknowledged himself bound to Henry de Mire, merchant of Coventre, in the sum of £6 16s.; to be paid at the octave of the Purification, &c.; and unless, &c. Pays for enrolment 14d. The said Henry puts in his place Roger de Clopton to receive the said money, &c.

[A.D. 1310-11], came John de Lincoln, William de Kent, tailor, Ralph de Garton called "Fox," and Bartholomew de Fisshebourne, tailor, before Luke de Haverynge, the Chamberlain, and acknowledged themselves jointly and severally bound to John de Preston in the sum of £8 6s. 8d.; to be paid at Easter, &c.; and unless, &c.

(Afterwards, viz., on Thursday after the Feast of Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr [7 July], 5 Edward II. [A.D. 1311], John de Preston received the sum of 106s. 8d. of the above debt.)

(Afterwards, viz., on Saturday the eve of Easter, came John de Barneby and acknowledged satisfaction, &c. It is therefore cancelled.)

(Afterwards, viz., on Wednesday after Clausum Paschæ, (fn. 9) 5 Edward II., the said Peter came and acknowledged satisfaction, &c. It is therefore cancelled.)

Thursday after the octave of the Purification B. M. [2 Feb.], 4 Edward II. [A.D. 1310-11], came John de Pountoyse before Luke de Haveryng, the Chamberlain, and acknowledged himself bound to Walter Lamereys de Luka in the sum of £8 12s.; to be paid at mid-Lent, and unless, &c.

(Afterwards, viz., on Friday before the Feast of St. Matthew, Ap, 5 Edward II., the said Walter came and acknowledged that he had received 100s. of the debt, and pledges were taken of the said John for the remaining 72s., which were afterwards paid, and the pledges restored.)

The same day came Walter le Mazerer and acknowledged himself bound to "Getochius" Honeste de Luka in the sum of 59s. 8d.; to be paid at Easter, and unless, &c.

(Whereof the said "Gettochius" received 30s., as he himself testifies. And afterwards a woman's surcoat of red medley was seized of the value of 20s., and because the said Walter was warned to redeem the said pledge and failed to do so, it was delivered to "Gettochius" for 20s.)

Tuesday after the Feast of St. Valentine [14 Feb.] came Gregory (Geoffrey?) de Stebenhethe and acknowledged himself bound to "Goscelyn," servant (the serjeant?), in the sum of £6; to be paid at Easter; &c., and unless, &c.

(Afterwards came John de Stebenhethe and Geoffrey de Stebenhethe, as appears on the fifth folio following, and made a recognizance for the above £6, to be paid to the said "Goscelin" at Christmas next, and so this recognizance is cancelled.)

Friday after the Feast of St. Matthias [24 Feb.] came Agnes de Raveneston and acknowledged herself bound to Richer de Refham, Mayor, in the sum of 18s.; to be paid at Easter, &c.; and unless, &c.

18 May came Henry Faukes and Seman de Waledene and acknowledged themselves jointly and severally bound to Nicholas Pikot, Alderman, (fn. 17) in the sum of 100s.; to be paid, viz., one moiety at the Feast of St. Peter ad Vincula and the other at Michaelmas, &c.; and unless, &c. And be it remembered that the said Nicholas has also a letter obligatory of the aforesaid Henry and Seman for the said debt, which letter he agrees shall be void on payment of the money.

(Afterwards the said Seman satisfied the said Nicholas of the above debt except the sum of 25s. still in arrears. On the Feast of St. Thomas, anno 10 Edward II., the said Nicholas came and acknowledged satisfaction for 15s., and there remained 10s. Afterwards the said Seman paid H[ugh] de Waltham, executor of the said Nicholas, the sum of 10s. and is quit.)

[A.D. 1311], came John le Mazelyner, "peverer," before Richer de Refham, Mayor, the Aldermen, and the Chamberlain, and acknowledged himself bound to the Mayor and Commonalty of the said City in the sum of £10; to be paid, viz., one moiety at Michaelmas and the other at Midsummer; and unless, &c.

Friday before the Feast of St. Michael [29 Sept.] came Henry le Coupere, blader, residing in Langebournewarde, and acknowledged himself bound to Roger le Paumer, blader, in the sum of £10; to be paid, viz., one moiety at Christmas and the other at Easter.

The following day came Robert de Uptone, chaucer, and acknowledged himself bound to Thomas Romayn, Alderman, (fn. 24) and Juliana his wife, in the sum of £20; to be paid, viz., one moiety at the Feast of All Saints and the other at Easter.

Monday after the Feast of St. Michael [29 Sept.] came Laurence le Smyth before the Mayor and Aldermen and acknowledged himself bound to Luke de Haveryng, Chamberlain, in the sum of 44s.; to be paid, viz., 24s. at the Feast of All Saints, and 20s. at Christmas.

Saturday before the Feast of St. Edward, K. [13 Oct.], 5 Edward II. [A.D. 1311], came Thomas le Verrer before the Mayor and Aldermen and acknowledged himself bound to the same in the sum of 17s.; to be paid at the Feast of All Saints.

Tuesday after the Feast of Conversion of St. Paul [25 Jan.], 2 Edward II. [A.D. 1308-9], came William de Wigindenne and acknowledged himself bound to Richard Poterel, Chamberlain, in the sum of 46s. 8d.; to be paid at Easter.

The same day (viz, Saturday before the Feast of St. Edward) came Ralph Sporon, Waryn le Spencer, Richard Aldbright, and Ralph Barn, tailor, before Luke de Haverynge, Chamberlain, and acknowledged themselves jointly and severally bound to John de Stayntone, clerk, in the sum of 40s.; to be paid by quarterly instalments of 10s., commencing at Christmas.

(Whereof 10s. are paid at the first term. Afterwards came Ralph Barn and paid 10s. for his share, and the aforesaid John gave him a release, reserving his right of action against the others.)

Wednesday the Feast of St. Edward, K. [13 Oct.], 5 Ed ward II. [A.D. 1311], came Richard de St. Alban and acknowledged himself bound to John de Dittone in the sum of £20; to be paid at Michaelmas.

(Afterwards, viz., on Friday before the Feast of St. Martin, anno 7 Edward II., at the suit of the said John, an inquest and extent were made of the tenements and rents of the aforesaid Richard on the day of the above recognizance, whereby it was found that the said Richard had £8 4s. in divers rents, whereof one moiety was delivered to the aforesaid John to hold by way of frank tenement until, &c.

Memorandum that John de Dittone came before John Dode, Chamberlain, on Monday before the Feast of St. Cuthbert [20 March], 7 Edward II. [A.D. 1313-14], and acknowledged that Peter de Grenewich had satisfied him of 2½ marks rent recently delivered to him by the Chamberlain out of an annual rent of 5 marks belonging to Richard de St. Alban for a tenement held by John de Redyng, cordwainer, in Ismongerlane, so that the said John de Dittone can make no further claim thereon, but saving his right to other rents delivered to him, as appears by the above extent, &c. Afterwards, viz., on 3 April, the same year, came the aforesaid John and acknowledged full satisfaction.)

Tuesday after the Feast of St. Luke [18 Oct.] came John de Stebenhethe, fishmonger, and Geoffrey de Stebenhethe, brewer of Garscherche, before Richer de Refham, Mayor, and William de Leire, Alderman, and Luke de Haverynge, Chamberlain, and acknowledged themselves bound to Goscelin, servant (serjeant ?), in the sum of £6; to be paid at Christmas.

The following Thursday came William de York, goldsmith, before the Chamberlain and acknowledged himself bound to Adam de Smalecombe in the sum of £8; to be paid at the Feast of St. Hillary, &c. And the aforesaid Adam puts in his place Eustace de Crenewelle to act as if he himself were present, &c.

The following day came William de Hedersete, mercer, before Richer de Refham, Mayor, John de Wengrave and Simon de Paris, Aldermen, and Luke de Haverynge, Chamberlain, and acknowledged himself bound to Nicholas Picot, mercer, in the sum of £6 16s.; to be paid, viz., one moiety at Christmas and the other at Easter, &c. And the aforesaid William agreed to indemnify Nicholas Picot against John Hautayn, his apprentice, touching the sum of £13 which the said John demanded for a debt due to him by Nicholas le Gode, and for which he had sued the said Nicholas Picot in the Sheriffs' Court.
