John de Cotome, skinner, came before Luke de Haveryng, Chamberlain, Friday after the Feast of St. Katherine [25 Nov.], 4 Edward II. [A.D. 1310], and acknowledged himself bound to William de Paris, draper (draperio), in the sum of 20 marks; to be paid, viz., one moiety at the Feast of the Purification and the other at the Feast of the Annunciation; and unless, &c.

(Afterwards, on 6 April, anno 4, came Henry Faukes, the valet of the said William, and acknowledged satisfaction, and therefore the recognizance is cancelled.)

Wednesday after the same Feast came Richard Senglant, tailor, before the Chamberlain and acknowledged himself bound to Thomas Perceval in the sum of £4 6s. 8d.; to be paid at Christmas, and unless, &c.

Thursday after the Feast of Conception [8 Dec.] came Roger le Vyroler and acknowledged himself bound to Hugh de Hereford, saddler, in the sum of £10; to be paid at Hokeday, (fn. 4) and unless, &c.

Monday the Feast of St. Thomas [21 Dec.] came Gilbert atte Herst and acknowledged himself bound to Richard, son of Adam le Charman de Rykelyng, in the sum of 20 marks; to be paid at the Feast of the Purification, and unless, &c.

(Afterwards, viz., on Friday after the Feast of St. Luke, anno 5 Edward II., came the aforesaid Richard and acknowledged satisfaction.)

Tuesday the morrow of the Feast of St. Thomas [21 Dec.], 4 Edward II. [A.D. 1310], came Thomas le White and Roger le White and acknowledged themselves jointly and severally bound to Thomas de Foxton, corder, in the sum of 60s.; to be paid by quarterly instalments of 7s. 6d., commencing at Midsummer; and unless, &c.

[A.D. 1310], came Simon de Pourtepol, called "le Webbe," (fn. 5) and John de Paris, cordwainer, and acknowledged themselves jointly and severally bound to Geoffrey de Conduit, Alderman, (fn. 6) in the sum of £16; to be paid at the octave of the Purification, and unless, &c.

Friday after the Feast of Epiphany [6 Jan.], 4 Edward II. [A.D. 1310-11], came Roger le Viroler before Luke de Haveryng, the Chamberlain, and acknowledged himself bound to Hugh de Waltham, clerk, (fn. 7) in the sum of 40s.; to be paid on the first Sunday in Lent, &c.; and unless, &c.

(He afterwards paid.)

Saturday after the Epiphany, the same year, came Nicholas Pikot and acknowledged himself bound to the same in the sum of £30; to be paid at Midsummer, and unless, &c.

Friday after the Feast of St. Hillary [13 Jan.] came Richard de Normanton, Thomas de Donewiche, and John de Honylane, skinners, and acknowledged themselves jointly and severally bound to John de Preston and Nicholas de Rokele, corders, in the sum of £6 18s.; to be paid on the Sunday in mid-Lent, and unless, &c. Given for enrolment 14d.

(Afterwards, viz., on 2 April, came Richard de Normanton, and paid the aforesaid John and Nicholas 46s.)

Saturday after the Feast of St. Hillary [13 Jan.] came Richard de Bery, skinner, and acknowledged himself bound to Henry de Mire, merchant of Coventre, in the sum of £6 16s.; to be paid at the octave of the Purification, &c.; and unless, &c. Pays for enrolment 14d. The said Henry puts in his place Roger de Clopton to receive the said money, &c.

Thursday the morrow of St. Hillary [13 Jan.] came John de Kent, "cossoun," and Robert his son, before the Mayor and Chamberlain, and acknowledged themselves bound to Richard But, mercer, in the sum of 20 marks; to be paid, viz., one moiety at Easter and the other at Michaelmas, &c., and unless, &c.

(Cancelled because Richard But acknowledged satisfaction.)

The same day came Thomas de Seeford, taverner, and acknowledged himself indebted to William Arnaud du Portaw in the sum of £6; to be paid, viz., one moiety at Pentecost and the other at Midsummer; and unless, &c. The said William puts in his place John de Arrawe to receive the money.

The same day came Richard But before Richer de Refham, the Mayor, and other Aldermen, and the Chamberlain, and acknowledged himself bound to John Helle and his fellowexecutors of the will of William Hasard in the sum of £14 13s. 4d.; to be paid in the quinzaine of Easter, and unless, &c.

Saturday before the Conversion of St. Paul [25 Jan.], 4 Edward II. [A.D. 1310-11], came John de Lincoln, William de Kent, tailor, Ralph de Garton called "Fox," and Bartholomew de Fisshebourne, tailor, before Luke de Haverynge, the Chamberlain, and acknowledged themselves jointly and severally bound to John de Preston in the sum of £8 6s. 8d.; to be paid at Easter, &c.; and unless, &c.

(Afterwards, viz., on Thursday after the Feast of Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr [7 July], 5 Edward II. [A.D. 1311], John de Preston received the sum of 106s. 8d. of the above debt.)

The same day came John le Chaundeler de Colmanstret and acknowledged himself bound to John de Barneby, "peverer," (fn. 8) of "Sopereslane," and Philip de Farnham, peverer, of "Soperelane," in the sum of £8 10s. for a cask of olive oil; to be paid at midLent, &c.; and unless, &c.

(Afterwards, viz., on Saturday the eve of Easter, came John de Barneby and acknowledged satisfaction, &c. It is therefore cancelled.)

The same day came Adam de Burton, skinner, and acknowledged himself bound to Robert Seely in the sum of £4 8s.; to be paid, viz., 20s. at the Feast of the Purification and 68s. at Easter; and unless, &c.

Tuesday after the Conversion of St. Paul [25 Jan.], 4 Edward II. [A.D. 1310-11], came John de Lincoln, clerk, and Bartholomew de Fissheborne, and acknowledged themselves bound to William Edward in the sum of 50s.; to be paid on Sunday before the Feast of Annunciation, and unless, &c.

Saturday before the Purification B. M. [2 Feb.], 4 Edward II. [A.D. 1310-11], came Laurence le Smyth and acknowledged himself bound to William de Leyre, Alderman, in the sum of 8s.; to be paid before Easter, either in money or work (in pecunia vel in opere); and unless, &c.

Saturday after the Feast of Purification [2 Feb.] came Adam de Mondene, "batour," and acknowledged himself bound to Peter de Grenewych in the sum of 100s.; to be paid by quarterly instalments of 20s., commencing at Easter; and unless, &c.

(Afterwards, viz., on Wednesday after Clausum Paschæ, (fn. 9) 5 Edward II., the said Peter came and acknowledged satisfaction, &c. It is therefore cancelled.)

Thursday after the octave of the Purification B. M. [2 Feb.], 4 Edward II. [A.D. 1310-11], came John de Pountoyse before Luke de Haveryng, the Chamberlain, and acknowledged himself bound to Walter Lamereys de Luka in the sum of £8 12s.; to be paid at mid-Lent, and unless, &c.

(Afterwards, viz., on Friday before the Feast of St. Matthew, Ap, 5 Edward II., the said Walter came and acknowledged that he had received 100s. of the debt, and pledges were taken of the said John for the remaining 72s., which were afterwards paid, and the pledges restored.)

The same day came Walter le Mazerer and acknowledged himself bound to "Getochius" Honeste de Luka in the sum of 59s. 8d.; to be paid at Easter, and unless, &c.

(Whereof the said "Gettochius" received 30s., as he himself testifies. And afterwards a woman's surcoat of red medley was seized of the value of 20s., and because the said Walter was warned to redeem the said pledge and failed to do so, it was delivered to "Gettochius" for 20s.)

Tuesday after the Feast of St. Valentine [14 Feb.] came John de Suffolk, taverner, and acknowledged himself bound to John de Preston, corder, in the sum of £4; to be paid on Sunday in mid-Lent, &c.; and unless, &c.

Tuesday after the Feast of St. Valentine [14 Feb.] came Gregory (Geoffrey?) de Stebenhethe and acknowledged himself bound to "Goscelyn," servant (the serjeant?), in the sum of £6; to be paid at Easter; &c., and unless, &c.

(Afterwards came John de Stebenhethe and Geoffrey de Stebenhethe, as appears on the fifth folio following, and made a recognizance for the above £6, to be paid to the said "Goscelin" at Christmas next, and so this recognizance is cancelled.)

Thursday after the Feast of St. Valentine [14 Feb.] came John the Goldbeater (Aurimalliator) and acknowledged himself bound to Alan de Sutton, saddler, in the sum of 53s.; to be paid by quarterly instalments of half a mark, commencing at Easter, until, &c.; and unless, &c.

On Ash Wednesday [24 Feb.], 4 Edward II. [A.D. 1310-11], came Robert de Gloucestre and Andrew de Gloucestre, goldsmiths, and acknowledged themselves bound to John Sterre, fishmonger, in the sum of £6; to be paid at Pentecost, &c.; and unless, &c.

Friday after the Feast of St. Matthias [24 Feb.] came Agnes de Raveneston and acknowledged herself bound to Richer de Refham, Mayor, in the sum of 18s.; to be paid at Easter, &c.; and unless, &c.

(Afterwards, viz., on Thursday before Easter, the said Richer received the money.)

Tuesday after the Feast of St. Matthias [24 Feb.] came Walter de Stebenheth, chaloner, John le Keu, chaloner, Reginald le Chaundeler, "sauser," (fn. 11) and Richard de Bokhurst, "taillour," before Henry de Durham (fn. 12) and Simon de Paris, (fn. 13) Aldermen, and Luke de Haverynge, the Chamberlain, and acknowledged themselves bound to William de Bidik in the sum of £29 8s. 7½ d.; to be paid three weeks after Easter, &c.; and unless, &c.

The same day came Thomas Colly, "ceinturer," before the Chamberlain and acknowledged himself bound to John de Nasyng in the sum of 20s.; to be paid at Midsummer, and unless, &c.

William Fulk, "ceinturer," acknowledged himself bound to the aforesaid John in the sum of 10s.; to be paid at Midsummer, &c.

(Afterwards the said John came and acknowledged satisfaction, and therefore it is cancelled.)

Wednesday after the Feast of St. Matthias [24 Feb.] came Hugh le Armurer and acknowledged himself bound to Henry le Gaugeour in the sum of £6 13s. 4d.; to be paid at Pentecost, and unless, &c.

(Cancelled, because Henry le Gaugeour came here on Friday before the Feast of Nativ. St. John Bapt., anno 4 Edward II., and acknowledged satisfaction.)

4 March, 4 Edward II. [A.D. 1310-11], came Robert Brungor, "wodemongere," and acknowledged himself bound to Clarice, late wife of Martin Schenche, in the sum of 100s.; to be paid at Michaelmas, &c.; and unless, &c.

6 March came William de Stebenheth, "batour," and acknowledged himself bound to Richard Potrel (fn. 14) in the sum of 40s.; to be paid at Christmas, and unless, &c.

1 March, 4 Edward II. [A.D. 1310-11], came Anabilla la Beek before the Mayor, Aldermen, and Chamberlain, and acknowledged herself bound to John de Cantebrige in the sum of £16 11s.; to be paid on Friday in the first week of Lent, &c.; and unless, &c.

(Afterwards, viz., on Wednesday the Feast of St. James [25 July], 7 Edward II. [A.D. 1313], came the said William, and in the presence of the Chamberlain acknowledged satisfaction. The recognizance is therefore cancelled.)

8 March came Nicholas le Palmere and acknowledged himself bound to William de Causton, mercer, in the sum of £10; to be paid at Easter, A.D. 1313, and unless, &c. And he pays for enrolment 20d.

The same day came William le Coffrer and acknowledged himself bound to John Sterre de Chabeham in the sum of 52s.; to be paid at Pentecost, and unless, &c.

(Afterwards, viz., on Thursday after the Feast of Decollation of St. John Bapt., anno 5 Edward II., came the aforesaid John and acknowledged satisfaction. It is therefore cancelled.)

[A.D. 1311], came Roger de Rokesle, junior, and John Vyel before the Mayor, Aldermen, and Chamberlain, and acknowledged themselves jointly and severally bound to Walter Bullok, vintner, in the sum of £10; to be paid, viz., one moiety at Pentecost and the other at Midsummer; and unless, &c.

(Afterwards the said Walter came before the Chamberlain and acknowledged satisfaction. The recognizance is therefore cancelled.)

12 May, 4 Edward II. [A.D. 1311], came Nicholas Maderman before the Aldermen and Chamberlain and acknowledged himself bound to John de Lyndeseye, "chaundeler," in the sum of 70s.; to be paid at the Feast of St. Bartholomew, and unless, &c.

18 May came Henry Faukes and Seman de Waledene and acknowledged themselves jointly and severally bound to Nicholas Pikot, Alderman, (fn. 17) in the sum of 100s.; to be paid, viz., one moiety at the Feast of St. Peter ad Vincula and the other at Michaelmas, &c.; and unless, &c. And be it remembered that the said Nicholas has also a letter obligatory of the aforesaid Henry and Seman for the said debt, which letter he agrees shall be void on payment of the money.

(Afterwards the said Seman satisfied the said Nicholas of the above debt except the sum of 25s. still in arrears. On the Feast of St. Thomas, anno 10 Edward II., the said Nicholas came and acknowledged satisfaction for 15s., and there remained 10s. Afterwards the said Seman paid H[ugh] de Waltham, executor of the said Nicholas, the sum of 10s. and is quit.)

Thursday after the Feast of SS. Peter and Paul [29 June] came John de Thorp, "peleter," and Hugh de Hereford, "peleter," and acknowledged themselves jointly and severally bound to William de Cornehill in the sum of 4 marks; to be paid by quarterly instalments of 1 mark, commencing at Michaelmas.

(Afterwards, viz., on Tuesday before the Feast of St. Bartholomew, anno 8 Edward II., came the aforesaid "Chatus" and acknowledged satisfaction. The recognizance is therefore cancelled.)

The same day came Simon de Broughtone, "peleter," and acknowledged himself bound to Walter le Fundour in the sum of £6; to be paid on Sunday before the Feast of St. Margaret, &c., and unless, &c. And the aforesaid Walter puts in his place Peter de Evendene to receive the money in his absence.

Saturday after the Feast of SS. Peter and Paul [29 June], 4 Edward II. [A.D. 1311], came John le Mazelyner, "peverer," before Richer de Refham, Mayor, the Aldermen, and the Chamberlain, and acknowledged himself bound to the Mayor and Commonalty of the said City in the sum of £10; to be paid, viz., one moiety at Michaelmas and the other at Midsummer; and unless, &c.

Monday the morrow of St. James [25 July], 5 Edward II. [A.D. 1311], came John le Despencer before the Chamberlain and acknowledged himself bound to John de Wenegrave (fn. 18) in the sum of 50s.; to be paid on the octave of the Assumption B. M., and unless, &c.

Wednesday before the Feast of St. Bartholomew [24 Aug.], 5 Edward II. [A.D. 1311], came John le Chaundeler before the Mayor and Aldermen and acknowledged himself bound to Luke de Haveryngge (fn. 20) in the sum of 15s. 6d.; to be paid at Michaelmas, and unless, &c.

[8 Sept.] came Sewald, son of Sewald de Springefeld, before R[icher] de Refham, Mayor, and Luke de Haveringge, Chamberlain, and acknowledged himself bound to Richard Godesname, "paternoster," (fn. 23) in the sum of 40s.; to be paid by quarterly instalments of 5s., commencing at Michaelmas.

(Afterwards, viz., on Thursday after the Feast of St. Peter ad Vincula, anno 6 Edward II., came the aforesaid Walter and John before the Chamberlain and together rendered account of certain rents of the aforesaid Walter, who had by execution of the Chamberlain delivered them over to the said John until the said debt should be levied. And after due account and allowance had been taken and made, the said John had received the said sum of £4. Thereupon each released the other.)

Wednesday the morrow of the Exaltation of H. Cross [14 Sept.] came Ralph le Taverner of Billinggesgate, residing in the parish of St. Dunstan towards the Tower, and acknowledged himself bound to William de Leire, Alderman, in the sum of £15; to be paid at the Feast of the Purification.

(Afterwards the aforesaid William came and acknowledged satisfaction. The recognizance is therefore cancelled.)

Friday before the Feast of St. Michael [29 Sept.] came Henry le Coupere, blader, residing in Langebournewarde, and acknowledged himself bound to Roger le Paumer, blader, in the sum of £10; to be paid, viz., one moiety at Christmas and the other at Easter.

The following day came Robert de Uptone, chaucer, and acknowledged himself bound to Thomas Romayn, Alderman, (fn. 24) and Juliana his wife, in the sum of £20; to be paid, viz., one moiety at the Feast of All Saints and the other at Easter.

Monday after the Feast of St. Michael [29 Sept.] came Laurence le Smyth before the Mayor and Aldermen and acknowledged himself bound to Luke de Haveryng, Chamberlain, in the sum of 44s.; to be paid, viz., 24s. at the Feast of All Saints, and 20s. at Christmas.

Saturday before the Feast of St. Edward, K. [13 Oct.], 5 Edward II. [A.D. 1311], came Thomas le Verrer before the Mayor and Aldermen and acknowledged himself bound to the same in the sum of 17s.; to be paid at the Feast of All Saints.

(Afterwards the said Thomas paid 12s.)

Tuesday after the Feast of Conversion of St. Paul [25 Jan.], 2 Edward II. [A.D. 1308-9], came William de Wigindenne and acknowledged himself bound to Richard Poterel, Chamberlain, in the sum of 46s. 8d.; to be paid at Easter.

The same day (viz, Saturday before the Feast of St. Edward) came Ralph Sporon, Waryn le Spencer, Richard Aldbright, and Ralph Barn, tailor, before Luke de Haverynge, Chamberlain, and acknowledged themselves jointly and severally bound to John de Stayntone, clerk, in the sum of 40s.; to be paid by quarterly instalments of 10s., commencing at Christmas.

(Whereof 10s. are paid at the first term. Afterwards came Ralph Barn and paid 10s. for his share, and the aforesaid John gave him a release, reserving his right of action against the others.)

Wednesday the Feast of St. Edward, K. [13 Oct.], 5 Ed ward II. [A.D. 1311], came Richard de St. Alban and acknowledged himself bound to John de Dittone in the sum of £20; to be paid at Michaelmas.

(Afterwards, viz., on Friday before the Feast of St. Martin, anno 7 Edward II., at the suit of the said John, an inquest and extent were made of the tenements and rents of the aforesaid Richard on the day of the above recognizance, whereby it was found that the said Richard had £8 4s. in divers rents, whereof one moiety was delivered to the aforesaid John to hold by way of frank tenement until, &c.

Memorandum that John de Dittone came before John Dode, Chamberlain, on Monday before the Feast of St. Cuthbert [20 March], 7 Edward II. [A.D. 1313-14], and acknowledged that Peter de Grenewich had satisfied him of 2½ marks rent recently delivered to him by the Chamberlain out of an annual rent of 5 marks belonging to Richard de St. Alban for a tenement held by John de Redyng, cordwainer, in Ismongerlane, so that the said John de Dittone can make no further claim thereon, but saving his right to other rents delivered to him, as appears by the above extent, &c. Afterwards, viz., on 3 April, the same year, came the aforesaid John and acknowledged full satisfaction.)

The following Saturday came Emma, wife of John le Hattere, and Ralph, son and heir of the said John, before Geoffrey de Conduit and Nicholas Picot, Aldermen, and Luke de Haverynge, Chamberlain, and acknowledged themselves severally bound to Thomas de la Haye, valet of Master Thomas Perot, in the sum of £20; to be paid at Easter, &c.

Tuesday after the Feast of St. Luke [18 Oct.] came John de Stebenhethe, fishmonger, and Geoffrey de Stebenhethe, brewer of Garscherche, before Richer de Refham, Mayor, and William de Leire, Alderman, and Luke de Haverynge, Chamberlain, and acknowledged themselves bound to Goscelin, servant (serjeant ?), in the sum of £6; to be paid at Christmas.

The following Thursday came William de York, goldsmith, before the Chamberlain and acknowledged himself bound to Adam de Smalecombe in the sum of £8; to be paid at the Feast of St. Hillary, &c. And the aforesaid Adam puts in his place Eustace de Crenewelle to act as if he himself were present, &c.

The following day came William de Hedersete, mercer, before Richer de Refham, Mayor, John de Wengrave and Simon de Paris, Aldermen, and Luke de Haverynge, Chamberlain, and acknowledged himself bound to Nicholas Picot, mercer, in the sum of £6 16s.; to be paid, viz., one moiety at Christmas and the other at Easter, &c. And the aforesaid William agreed to indemnify Nicholas Picot against John Hautayn, his apprentice, touching the sum of £13 which the said John demanded for a debt due to him by Nicholas le Gode, and for which he had sued the said Nicholas Picot in the Sheriffs' Court.
