Monday in Easter week, 3 Edward II. [A.D. 1310], came Petronilla de Kynebautone, late wife of William de Kynebautone, and acknowledged herself bound to Richard de la Chaumbre, mercer, in the sum of £53; to be paid, viz., one moiety at Michaelmas and the other at Christmas; and unless, &c.

(On 1 April, anno 4 Edward II., the above Richard came and acknowledged satisfaction of the debt. It is therefore cancelled.)

(Afterwards, viz., on 5 May, 4 Edward II., the aforesaid John came and acknowledged satisfaction of the debt, and quitclaimed the said Arnald.)

Wednesday after the Feast of St. Dunstan [19 May] came Simon Morival, fishmonger, and acknowledged himself bound to Edmund Lambyn, fishmonger, in the sum of £6 5s.; to be paid by quarterly instalments of 20s., commencing at Midsummer, until, &c. In case of any default the Chamberlain to distrain on his lands and chattels, &c.

Saturday before the Feast of Ascension [28 May] came Richard de Rothewell, skinner, Geoffrey le Brochere de Sopereslane, [and] John Ballard, "peleter," before the Mayor and Chamberlain and acknowledged themselves jointly and severally bound to Bernard Viger in the sum of £9 13s. 4d.; to be paid, viz., 60s. on the Saturday aforesaid, 40s. at Midsummer and Michaelmas, and 26s. 8d. at Christmas and Easter following, &c.

(Of which sum the said Bernard received 100s., as appears by an acquittance, &c.)

Trinity [14 June] came Roger le Peletrer and John de Wenegrave and acknowledged themselves indebted to John de Wyndesore, Alderman, in the sum of 66s. 8d.; to be paid on the morrow of St. Bartholomew, &c. In case of default by the said Roger the said John de Wenegrave covenants to pay one half of the debt, &c.

[A.D. 1310], came William de Hungerford and acknowledged himself bound to Nicholas de Sudyntone, clerk to Sir Hugh le Despenser, (fn. 2) in the sum of £8; to be paid on the morrow of the Assumption B. M., &c. The said Nicholas put in his place John Dode, ironmonger, to receive the sum of 60s., arrears of the debt.

Wednesday the Feast of St. Mary Magdalen [22 July] came Adam le Taverner de Sidingburne and Adam Trug', of London, and acknowledged themselves jointly and severally bound to John de Wyndesore, Alderman, executor of Walter de Fynchingfeld, and other executors of the same, in the sum of £20; to be paid at Midsummer with mesne profits; and unless, &c.

Thursday after the Feast of St. Matthew [21 Sept.], 4 Edward II. [A.D. 1310], came Richard de Cristemasse and Agnes his wife and acknowledged themselves bound to Clarice de Okstede, late wife of Martin Shenche, in the sum of £6 13s. 4d.; to be paid one year from Michaelmas next, &c.

(Afterwards the said Agnes came and showed the Chamberlain a certain acquittance for the debt. They are therefore quit.)

Thursday after the Feast of St. Michael [29 Sept.] came Baudechoun le Chaucer before the Mayor, Aldermen, and the Chamberlain, and acknowledged himself bound to Robert de Lemynton, barber, in the sum of 50s.; to be paid three weeks from Sunday next.

(Afterwards the said Robert came and acknowledged satisfaction of 40s., and demanded execution for 10s. arrears, for which 8½ ells of cloth were seized and appraised at 11s. 4d.; and inasmuch as the cloth was not redeemed by the debtor within a fortnight, it was delivered to the creditor.)

(Whereof the said William de Leyre acknowledged he had received 13 marks for the first term. Afterwards he acknowledged he had received the whole.)

  • 1. Engrosser, or wholesale dealer, more especially of and in spiceries, whence the name "grocer," as applied later to a "pepperer" or "spicer." Cf. "Les marchauntz nomez grossers engrossent totes maners de mar chandises vendables" (Stat. 37 Edward III., cap. v.).
  • 2. Probably Hugh le Despenser the elder, the King's personal friend and adviser against the Barons.
