Footnotes

  • 1. Otherwise known as John of the Vintry, clerk, or Clerk of the Vintry. See 'Lib. Cust.,' i. 241-243.
  • 2. Probably, in this case (as also supra, p. 83), the Steward and Marshal of the Exchequer, whose duty it was (inter alia) to see to the recovery of debts due to the King and to appoint auditors for Sheriffs' accounts, &c.
  • 3. Perhaps the keeper of the public crane (Riley).
  • 4. A wealthy company of Italian merchants like the Bardi and the Peruzzi. See article by the late Sir E.A. Bond on Italian money-lenders in Archæologia, vol. xxviii. In 1309 the Friscobaldi were appointed by the King to receive the "new custom" from the foreign merchants, and two years later the King ordered their arrest for failing to render an account of money received under that head. Their detention was of short duration. Letter Book D, fos. 134 b, 135.
  • 5. Another of the numerous mercantile societies of Italy.
  • 6. Ends abruptly.
  • 7. The Chamberlain, or one of the City Chamberlains.
  • 8. At Bigging, in the parish of Ansty, co. Herts, was an old priory or hospital, dedicated to St. Mary, for a master and chaplains (Tanner, 'Not. Monast.,' p. 189).
  • 9. Or "Sefounteyns." Vide infra, p. 115.
  • 10. See note supra, p. 56.
  • 11. Surnamed "le Grand." He did much towards effecting a peace between England and France in 1298, and in bringing about the marriage of Edward, who was then a widower, with Margaret, the French king's sister, and that of the Prince of Wales with Isabella, the same monarch's daughter.
  • 12. The Latin terms porta and portus appear to have been used with little discrimination. Thus in the will of Edmund Harengeye, enrolled in the Court of Husting, we find the following: Ac eciam lego et volo quod illa tenementa cum magno portu vocato le Brodegate......vendantur, &c. Hust. Roll 114 (76).
  • 13. Piacenza (?).
  • 14. Meaning, probably, "the elder,' since he was never Mayor. Cf. Adam de Foleham, "minor," supra, p. 3.
  • 15. "Hamo le Stynur (?)" and Muriel his wife occur in the 'Calendar of Feet of Fines for London and Middlesex, anno 35 Edward I.,' edited by Messrs. Hardy and Page (i. 77).
  • 16. Spurner, or spur-maker.
  • 17. Westhall (?), co. Suffolk.
  • 18. The livre parisis differed from the livre tournois in that the latter contained only 20 sous, while the former contained 25 sous.
  • 19. The meaning is doubtful. Spallarium or spallerium, according to Du Cange, represents defensive armour for the shoulder, Fr. épaulière. Spaleria, on the other hand, means a curtain-pole.
