14 Nov., 13 Edward II. [A.D. 1319], two letters sealed with the Common Seal of the City in the presence of J[ohn] de Wengrave, the Mayor, N[icholas] de Farndone, J[ohn] Poyntel, Thomas Prentiz, the Chamberlain, Matthew de Essex, and Walter Gorst, viz.: (1) an acknowledgment that the said Mayor and Aldermen had received of John Poyntel and John de Dallynge, the Sheriffs, the sum of £9 out of the ferm and issues of the City aforesaid and the county of Middlesex, in part payment of the sum of £1,000 which the Mayor and citizens lent to the King in the tenth year of his reign, the letter being dated 18 July the year aforesaid. And be it known that the said £9 were paid as follows, viz.: to the said John Poyntel 100s., and to the said John de Dallynge £4, which sums they had advanced for the above loan of £1,000, and for which they had bills, which they now gave up, and which were placed in the small coffer with the Common Seal. (2) a bond by the Mayor, Aldermen, and citizens in favour of John de Stebenhethe, clerk, and Simon Godard, draper, dated 9 Oct., 13 Edward II. [A.D. 1319].

Lease by John Abel, Knt., to Henry de Stowe, draper, of the capital tenement called "Coldherberghe," (fn. 6) in the parish of All Hallows at the Hay, together with easements on the wharf of Robert, son of William de Hereford; which tenement and easements the said Robert demised to the aforesaid John and Margery his late wife, mother of the said Robert, for a term of ten years from Sunday the Feast of SS. Peter and Paul [29 June], anno 10 Edward II. [A.D. 1317]. (fn. 7) To hold the said tenement to the said Henry de Stowe for a term of eight years from Michaelmas, anno 13 Edward II. [A.D. 1319], at an annual rent of 33s. 4d., to be paid to the said Robert de Hereford. Judicium pillorie pro carnibus putridis.

Sunday after the Feast of All Saints [1 Nov.], 13 Edward II. [A.D. 1319], Adam de St. Alban, William atte Ramme, Nicholas Dereman, and Gilbert de Dullyngham, sworn to survey the meat brought to the shambles called "les Stokkes," came before Hamo de Chiggewelle, the Mayor, J[ohn] de Wengrave, W[illiam] de Leyre, J[ohn] de Camera, E[lias] de Suffolk, R[obert] de Kelese, Anketyn de Gysorz, and Henry de Seccheford, Aldermen, [and] Simon de Abyndone and John de Prestone, the Sheriffs, and caused to be brought before them two bullock carcases, putrid and poisonous, which had been taken from William Sperlyng de West Hamme, and which he intended to sell at the aforesaid shambles. The said William appeared and demanded an inquiry as to the state of the meat. The jurors, viz.: William ate Ramme, Adam de St. Alban, John le Chaundeler of St. Laurence Lane, Nicholas Dereman, Thomas Poyntel, William Gille, Stephen de Hereford, John Picard, "barbier," Simon de Totenham, Reginald de Canefelde. William de Canefeld, and William de Toppesfeld, find that the meat was bad and that the animals died of disease. Judgment that the said William Sperlyng be set on the pillory and the carcases burnt beneath him. (fn. 9)

Writ to the Sheriffs of London that they produce the bodies of the chief taxors and collectors of the eighteenth and the twelfth granted to the King in the City before Walter de Norwich, who was about to visit the City on the King's business, to the intent that they may receive such orders from the said Walter as he may think fit. Witness the King at York, 9 Nov., 13 Edward II. [A.D. 1319].

Letter from Hamo de Chigwell, the Mayor, the Aldermen, and the whole Commonalty of the City to the King, assuring him of the City's loyalty and praying him to graciously accede to a petition forwarded by Hamo Godchep, Henry de Seccheford, John de Castelacre, and Edmund Cosyn. Dated 27 Nov., 13 Edward II. [A.D. 1319].

Petition to the King from the citizens complaining of the exactions of John de Everdone and his fellow-commissioners appointed to assess the tax of a twelfth of all movables in the City recently granted the King by citizens and burgesses of the land, and praying for redress and for the maintenance of the City's franchises.

Writ to the Mayor and Sheriffs to cause proclamation to be made against bringing petronels (fn. 10) or other offensive weapons likely to provoke disturbances into the City, and to arrest all those found doing to the contrary, saving the serjeants-at-arms of the King and Queen, and one valet to each earl and baron to carry his master's sword. Witness the King at York, 16 Oct., 13 Edward II. [A.D. 1319].

Lease by Ralph Beleverge, ironmonger, and "Bonajoia" his wife, daughter of Robert de Multone and Agnes his wife, to Hugh de Worcester, skinner, of an annual quitrent of 20s., charged on a tenement held by Geoffrey del Bernet, girdler, and Matilda his wife, for their lives, in the parish of St. Benedict Shorhog, situate near the tenements of William Servat and Sir Richer de Refham, which rent the aforesaid Agnes bequeathed to the aforesaid "Bonajoia." To hold the said rent to the said Hugh for the lifetime of the said Ralph and "Bonajoia" and the survivor of them. Wednesday before the Feast of SS. Fabian and Sebastian [20 Jan.], 13 Edward II. [A.D. 1319-20], Richard le Forester attached to answer a charge of practising deceit upon Richard de Bentone (fn. 12) in the matter of a certain garland. The accused puts himself upon the country. Being found guilty by a jury of having deceived many persons, he is sentenced to stand in the pillory and abjure the City for a year and a day.

Be it remembered that whereas on Thursday before the Feast of the Purification B. M. [2 Feb.], 13 Edward II. [A.D. 1319-20], William de Evre, ironmonger, caused certain pledges in the house of Edmund le Lorymer, where Stephen le Bokeler, smith (faber), resided, to be attached by Joice, the Serjeant of the Chamber, to satisfy a bond in which the said Stephen stood bound to the said William, the said Edmund came before Andrew Horn, the Chamberlain, and claimed the sum of 14s. as due to him for rent, as he offered to prove by his law, &c. And because the said pledges were attached when Thomas Prentiz was Chamberlain, who had been removed from office, the aforesaid Andrew Horn, the Chamberlain, came before Geoffrey de Hertpol and Henry de Seccheford, Aldermen, and asked if the said Edmund ought to be allowed to make his law, &c. And it was adjudged that pledges of the value of 14s. should be delivered to the said Edmund, on his making oath, the residue being delivered by the Chamberlain to William de Evre.

Wednesday before the same Feast came Laurence le Barbier, one of those sworn to keep the Poultry upon Cornhull, before the Mayor, and complained that John Bakon, poulterer, was a common forestaller of poultry, and demanded an inquest by the country, &c. And the said John, being interrogated by Hamo de Chigwell, the Mayor, Geoffrey de Hertpol, John Poyntel, Robert Sely, Roger le Palmere, Roger de Frowik, Simon de Abyndone, Alderman and Sheriff, Richard Costantyn, John Cotun, and Henry de Seccheford, Aldermen, said that he was not guilty, and likewise put himself on the country, &c. The jurors, viz., John Cristemasse, Nicholas le Longe, Edmund Mohaut, John Ballard, Walter de Oxenford, Nicholas Seman, Robert de Poumfreit, William de Cantebrige, Richard Scot, Thomas le Cuteler, Robert de la Valeye, and Richard de Rothynge, find that he is a common forestaller as charged, and that he is accustomed to practise forestalling (forestallariam facere), &c. Committed to prison.

Deed whereby Thomas de Uptone, a clerk, covenants to permit Richard de Bromfeld, a layman, to occupy certain houses which the said Thomas purchased of Sir James de Audele, Knt., situate on Cornhull between the churches of St. Michael and St. Peter, for 80 marks, to be paid as prescribed, the said Thomas reserving to himself the absolute disposal of certain new houses, with stabling for four horses, which he had erected at his own expense. [A.D. 1319-20], Hamo de Chigwelle, the Mayor, John de Gisorz, Nicholas de Farndone, Geoffrey de Hertpol, Simon Corp, Edmund Lambyn, Simon de Abyndone, Simon de Parys, John Poyntel, Richard Costantyn, Anketin de Gisorz, Elias de Suffolk, Roger de Frowik, Robert Sely, Roger le Palmere, Henry Nazard, Henry de Seccheford, and John Cotun, Aldermen, and the Commonalty, being assembled at the Guildhall, it was agreed that fourpence should be taken in each pound of the twelfth according to the manner of the first assessment made by neighbours, which twelfth was granted to King Edward II. at York in the thirteenth year of his reign at the Parliament held there. Saturday the octave of the Purification B. M. [2 Feb.], 13 Edward II. [A.D. 1319-20], Laurence Albyn, William Trigge, William Scot, Robert de Hakeneye, Master John le Fisshmongere, Robert de Ledebery, Thomas Sprott, Ralph de Geldesburgh, and Henry Flynthard brought to the Guildhall before the Mayor and Aldermen sixteen nets called "kidels" (fn. 14) taken in the Thames in charge of John de Pelham, fishmonger, of Wolwich, and John Godgrom, "Drynker," (fn. 15) of Plomstede, who said that the kidels belonged to Robert, son of John Pesok, of Plumstede, John Pesok, Henry Wolvyn de Lesnes, John Gerald, William Prat, John Prat, John Dyngesand, John Segod, John his son, John Waryn de Berkyngge, John le Carpenter de Erhethe, William, son of John Pesok, John Bourne, and Adam Savery. The said kidels had been placed in the aforesaid water to the destruction of fry and salmon, &c. The kidels ordered to be burnt, and the fishermen aforesaid not to commit the like offence under penalty prescribed. (fn. 16)

Sunday after the Feast of St. Valentine [14 Feb.], 13 Edward II. [A.D. 1319-20], Roger de Frowik, Alderman, mainprised the City for payment of £8 8s. 4d.; and Hamo de Chig well, the Mayor, John de Gisorz, Nicholas de Farndone, Anketin de Gisorz, and Simon de Abyndone, Aldermen, mainprised for the repayment of the same on Palm Sunday next, &c. And Thomas Rys mainprised the City for the payment of 100s.; and the said Mayor and Aldermen similarly mainprised for the repayment of the same.

The same day John Sterre, fishmonger, lent to the said Mayor and Aldermen the sum of £6, to be repaid on Palm Sunday, &c. The same day Simon de Swanlond, draper, paid 20s. for the City's business; Adam de Salesbire lent 10s.; John Cotun, Alderman, 100s.; Thomas de Enefeld, pepperer, one mark; Thomas Cok, draper, 40s.; John de Prestone, 20s.; Robert le Callere, 20s.; and William de Hakford, £13.
