INDEX

This index covers persons, places and some subjects. In compiling it the following rules were used: 1. Families have been listed under the name of the examinee rather than the male head of household. Family members with different surnames are listed under those names as well. Fathers of bastard children are listed under their own names. 2. Place names have been indexed by parish for London and Middlesex, by county for the rest of England, and by country for everywhere else. Street names and references to places smaller than a parish located in London, Westminster, Middlesex and Southwark have also been indexed individually. 3. Occupations have been standardized under the most useful specific category, so 'in service as cook' has been indexed under 'cook' rather than 'servant'. 4. The outcomes of examinations (such as 'passed') have been indexed where known.
