  • 2. Probably the John Cornish, monk of Westminster Abbey, who was admitted there in the year Michaelmas 1502–3 and was still alive in 1534–5 (Pearce, p. 180).
  • 3. Perhaps the Richard Chapman of Holy Trinity Priory, Aldgate who was ordained acolyte on 17 December 1496, subdeacon May 1497, deacon 23 February 1499 and priest on 18 September 1501 (Davis, 10846).

  • 7. Among deaths for 1511 (515). Thomas Swerder (Swerdar/Sworder) MA, vicar of Harlow, Essex, 1493–1510. Emden BRUO to 1500 and BRUC to 1500 sub Swer- dars identifies him as the individual who requested burial in the chancel of All Saints, Tottenham, Middlesex, by his will of 26 July, proved 2 September, 1510 (PROB 11/16, f. 243v).
  • 8. Among deaths for 1512 (525). John Pickering was prebendary of Consumpta-per-Mare 1495–1505 and of Newington from 1505, both in St Paul's, but was dead by 10 February 1512 (Fasti, pp. 33, 52).
  • 9. Nicholas Dolphinby of London diocese was ordained priest on 20 December 1505 on the title of Stratford-at-Bow Priory (Davis, 12227). As the name is so uncommon, he is probably identifiable with the priest of this name who was a chap- lain of Eton College in 1519–20 (Williamson, Eton Choir Book, Appendix H).

John Brooke (Brocke/Broke), chantry priest of St Margaret Pattens, requested burial in the chancel there and left 3s 4d to the Pappey and parish clerks' fraternities respectively by his will of 1 January, proved 24 December, 1515 (Darlington, London Consistory Court Wills, 23).
  • 12. Probably the Thomas Honington (Honyngton) of London diocese who was ordained subdeacon on 16 March, deacon 30 March, and priest (on the title of Holy- well Priory, London) 21 September, 1499 (Davis, 18729).
  • 13. A William Lewis was parish clerk of All Hallows Staining and occurs in the churchwardens' accounts there from 1508–10 (Guildhall MS 4956/1). He is not necessarily identical with the man of the same name who was appointed conduct at Guildhall Chapel to play the organs there at a salary of 20s in 1522–3 (as argued by Baillie, Biographical Notes) particularly as the latter is described as the late virger of St Paul's. Another clerk named William Lewis (Lewys) was also admitted in 1507 above (460).
  • 14. John Lawrence (Lawrens) was junior master in 1514 (541), and parish clerk of St Vedast Foster Lane.
  • 15. Stephen Morris (Morres) was presumably the parish clerk of All Hallows Honey Lane in the churchyard of which he requested burial by his will of 5 April, proved 9 June, 1529 (Guildhall MS 9171/10, f. 127v). His wife Agnes was instructed there to give warning to the brethren of the Pappey fraternity and 'my company of clerks' to bury him. She is apparently among admissions for 1511 (512).
  • 16. Identified with the John Smith who was a singer in Lady Margaret Beaufort's household in 1503 and a gentleman of the Chapel Royal by 1509–10 (Biographical Dictionary of English Court Musicians, following Baillie, Biographical Notes), but the name is too common for this to be more than a possibility. This Smith died in 1510 but is not recorded among deaths on BR. There are several individuals with this name noted in our MS around this time.
  • 17. A Thomas Dallison is noted as parish clerk of St Gregory by St Paul's in 1536 (Mc Murray, Index).
  • 18. Parish clerk of All Hallows the Great and junior master in 1515 (551); among deaths for 1518 (587). Perhaps the John Banks (Bankys), yeoman, who requested burial in the cloister of All Hallows the Great by his will of 3 May, proved 11 May, 1518 (Guildhall MS 9171/9, f 87r). His wife Elizabeth is named there and an Eliz- abeth Banks is among the clerks' wives admitted in 1515 (553).

Nicholas Griffin, Kt, described in his nuncupative will of 14 May 1509, proved 25 July 1510, as 'lying at' Thornborough Place in St Bride's parish (PROB 11/16, f. 231r). Also of Braybrooke, Northants. His wife and executrix Alice, is mentioned there, and was admitted with him below (463).
  • 22. Among deaths for 1515 (559). Thomas Darnall (Darnoll), described as gentleman, of London, in his will of 17 January, proved 28 October, 1515. He requested burial in the church of St Thomas of Acon (if he died in London) or in the monastery of Stratford, Essex (PROB 11/18, f. 83v). He left 10s to the parish clerks' and Pappey fraternities respectively to bring his body to burial and to pray for his soul.
  • 23. Sir Thomas Wryth (later Wriothesley) who died on 24 November 1534. As Garter King of Arms from 1505 he lived at Garter House in Red Cross Street, Cripplegate, and was buried in the church of St Giles Cripplegate. See DNB.
  • 24. Among deaths for 1510 (507). William Wryth (later Wriothesley), brother of Thomas Wryth, Garter King of Arms. William, described here as Rougecroix Pursuivant, was later York Herald and progenitor of the Wriothesley family, Earls of Southampton. See DNB sub Thomas Wriothesley, 1st Earl of Southampton.
  • 25. Among deaths for 1516 (568). A Henry Adey (Ade), citizen and grocer, who requested burial in the church of St Michael Cornhill, left a will of 9 August 1515, proved 5 May 1516 (PROB 11/18, f. 129r).
  • 26. Among the deaths for 1515 (559). Probably the William Addis (Adys), citizen and goldsmith, who requested burial in the church of the Blackfriars, London (although he was a parishioner of St Peter Cheap) by his will of 21 November 1514, proved 30 March 1515 (PROB 11/18, f. 226r). This mentions his wife and executrix Maud, and a Maud Adys was admitted with William below (463).
  • 27. Probably the Richard Chopyn (Choppyn) who was elected sheriff in 1530 and alderman 1532–6 (Beaven, II, 27); master of the Tallow Chandlers 1523–6, of the Grocers 1533–4. By his will of 7 March, proved 23 April, 1536 he left 8d to the two chief clerks of St Giles Cripplegate and 4d to two other clerks to attend his yearly obit in this church (PROB 11/25, f. 257v). His monument was erected there (Stow, Survey, ed Kingsford, I, 300).

His sons Thomas and William, mentioned there, appear with him among deaths below (467).
  • 35. Apparently the son of William Stead, alderman, and brother of Thomas Stead, who also appear among deaths in this year (467).
  • 36. Thomas Stead (Steyd), citizen and grocer, requested burial in the church of St Magnus Martyr near to his father, William Stead, alderman, and mentioned his brother William Stead in his will of 22 October, proved 17 November, 1506 (PROB 11/15, f. 131v). Their names appear with his among deaths for 1507. Thomas left 20s to the parish clerks' fraternity.
  • 37. A John Thomas, citizen and mercer, requested burial before (the image of) St Alban in his parish church of St Alban Wood Street by his will of 9 September, proved 5 November, 1506 (PROB 11/15, f. 114r).
  • 38. Probably the Richard Marrys (Mareys), citizen and vintner, who requested burial in the church of St Thomas of Acon (although apparently a parishioner of St Mary-le-Bow) by his will of 12 June, proved 11 July, 1506 (PROB 11/15, f. 68r).
  • 39. Presumably the Robert Downs, monk of Westminster Abbey, who was professed in 1501 aged 17, celebrated his first mass in the year Michaelmas 1506–7 and is last mentioned in the chamberlain's accounts there for 1524–5 (Pearce, p 178).
  • 40. Presumably the William Overton, monk of Westminster Abbey, who was admitted in the year Michaelmas 1501–2, first mass 1504–5, custos feretri 1528, attested 1534–5, but missing from the chamberlain's list in 1535–6 (Pearce, p 179).

John Haddenham, fellow of Trinity Hall, Cambridge in 1486, proceeded BCL 1488 and was rector of Fobbing, Essex from 1506 until his death which had occurred by September 1511 (Emden, BRUC to 1500). He requested burial in the chapel of Corpus Christi and St Mary in Conyhope Lane, London. His will of 9 August 1510 is extant (Guildhall MS 9531/9, f. 201v), so his BR entry here shows he must actually have died between August 1510 and May 1511.
  • 42. A William Osborne was rector of St Mary Magdalene Old Fish Street 1517–27, when he died (Hennessy, pp 319, cxxxiv).
  • 43. A Thomas Howell, chantry priest of the Tallowchandlers, requested burial in the Lady chapel of St Botolph Bishopsgate 'where I have used to synge' by his will of 11 March, proved 11 April, 1541 (PROB 11/28, f. 211v).
  • 44. A Thomas Newman from London diocese passed through various clerical grades 1498–1502 and was ordained priest on 26 March 1502 (Davis, 15428).
  • 45. A William Clifton from London diocese passed through various clerical grades in 1502 and was ordained priest on the title of St Bartholomew's Hospital, Smithfield on 21 May 1502 (Davis, 11270).
  • 46. A John Nicolson from London diocese passed through various clerical grades in 1505–6 and was ordained priest (on the title of 'Holy Trinity') on 16 April 1506 (Davis, 15144).
  • 47. Presumably the Henry Orlow who was a conduct and teacher of four choristers at St Michael Cornhill in 1509 (Baillie, Biographical Notes). He entered into an agreement with the churchwardens to be present to sing at the principal festivals and when the organs were needed; also to find four children on the main feasts and holy days to assist in singing pricksong (i.e. polyphony) and plainsong (Guildhall MS 1016/1, f.1).
  • 48. Probably the John Harrison who was parish clerk of All Hallows Staining, where he is mentioned in the churchwardens' accounts with his father (among deaths for 1507 (465)) and then on his own during 1500–10 (Baillie, Biographical Notes). He was junior master of the fraternity in 1522 (Christie, p 76). Baillie's supposition that he is also identifiable with the John Harrison who was parish clerk at the same church in 1551 is a possibility but the latter may well represent a later generation.

  • 50. Among deaths for 1510 (507). Probably the Roger North, parishioner of St Michael le Querne, whose will of 19 November, was proved 30 November, 1509 (PROB 11/16, f. 175r). His wife and executrix Christina is mentioned there and a Christina North was admitted with Roger below (475). Stow (Survey, ed Kingsford, I, 342) mentions that he was a haberdasher on the basis of his monument in St Michael le Querne.
  • 51. John Josson, citizen and skinner. He requested burial (as a former parishioner) before the rood in the church of St Antholin, where his late wife Alice was buried, by his will of 28 January, proved 1 April, 1524 (PROB 11/21, f. 133r). Among other bequests to the St Bride, Corpus Christi and Pappey brotherhoods, he left 6s 8d to the parish clerks' fraternity to pray for his soul. His two wives Alice and Anne, mentioned in his will, are among deaths and admissions respectively for 1516 (569, 564). Josson was also a member of the Jesus guild at St Paul's (New, Cult of the Holy Name of Jesus, Appendix 3, p 398).
  • 52. Probably the William Hunning (Honnyng) the Elder who requested burial in the Lady chapel of St Nicholas Cole Abbey by his will of 22 February 1542, proved 5 August 1550 (PROB 11/33, f. 150r). His wife mentioned there was named Joan, and a Joan Hunning appears with William among admissions below (475).
  • 53. John Wright, citizen and merchant taylor, who requested burial in the church of St Mary Bothaw by his will of 9 May, proved 23 May, 1528 (PROB 11/22, f. 255v). He left 6s 8d to the parish clerks' fraternity to pray for his soul. His wife Elizabeth, who acted as his executor, was admitted with him below (475).
  • 54. Perhaps the Edmund Story, citizen and draper, who requested burial in the cloister of St Mary Woolnoth by his will of 6 December, proved 15 December, 1525 (Guildhall MS 9171/10, f. 73r) as his wife Julian is mentioned there and a Julian Story was admitted with Edmund below (475). He was evidently widely travelled as he left 3s 4d to Our Lady of Guadalupe in Spain.
  • 55. Among deaths for 1514 (549). Distribution of the assets of John Golder, vintner, of St Sepulchre, was effected on 22 August 1513 (Guildhall MS 9168/3, f. 97r).
  • 56. Possibly the William Heath (Heythe), citizen and cutler, who requested burial in the church of St Martin Ludgate (if he died in London) by his will of 3 April 1535, proved 10 April 1537 (PROB 11/27, f. 24v). His wife Agnes is mentioned there and an Agnes Heath was admitted with William below (475).
  • 57. Probably the John Mongeham, citizen and fishmonger, who requested burial in the south aisle of St Mary at Hill by his will of 20 May, proved 3 July, 1514 (PROB 11/18, f. 12r). His wife Alice is mentioned there and an Alice Mongeham (Mowngham) was admitted with John below (475).
  • 58. Perhaps the Thomas Addison (Adesonne), brewer, who requested burial in the chapel on the north side of St Anne and St Agnes before (the image of) the Virgin by his will of 4 June, proved 25 June, 1537 (PROB 11/27, f. 51v). If so the Joan Addison mentioned there as his wife is presumably not the individual of the same name admitted with him below (475), as a Joan Addison is also recorded among deaths for 1508 (481). Thomas Addison was one of the most substantial inhabitants in the parish between c1520 and his death, being assessed on property worth £80 for the lay subsidy of 1536.   • 72. Richard Glasier, citizen and mercer. He requested burial at the church of St Magnus Martyr 'as high in the hallowed ground there as I may conveniently be buried' by his will of 18 July, proved 27 July, 1507 (PROB 11/15, f. 236v) although he was a parishioner of St Leonard Eastcheap. He left 40s to both the Pappey and parish clerks' brotherhoods 'soo that they admit me as a broder into their fraternities and be at my burying as they accustome to be at the burying of their brethren'. He had been named as executor of his father-in-law William Stead and of Thomas Stead his brother-in-law, both apparently admitted to posthumous membership of the parish clerks' fraternity in 1507 (467) and also buried at St Magnus.
  • 73. Perhaps the Robert Settcole (Setcole), citizen and founder, who requested burial in the church of St Lawrence Jewry by his will of 7 October, proved 22 October, 1507 (PROB 11/15, f. 209r).
