  • 1. John Dowman DCL, archdeacon of Suffolk c1505–26 and rector of St Nicholas Acon briefly in 1506 (Emden, BRUC to 1500). By his will of 8 November, proved 6 December, 1526 (PROB 11/22, f. 108v) he requested burial in St Katherine's chapel on the south side of St Paul's where his monument was erected (Stow, Survey, ed Kingsford, I, 337). He endowed a chantry at the cathedral with £440 and left 8d to every parish clerk of the churches in Southwark for attendance at the dirige and mass he sought at each of them.
  • 2. A John Clavering. MA by 1485, was rector of St Christopher le Stocks from 1494. He was dead by January 1514 (Emden, BRUO to 1500) but his death is not entered on BR.
  • 3. Perhaps the John Buck who was incorporated MA at Oxford in 1507 and proceeded DTh 1513 when abroad (Emden, BRUO 1501–1540). One of this name was also rector of St Martin Ludgate 1506–14, when he died (Hennessy, p 292). It is possible that he died abroad which might account for the absence of any record of this event on BR.
  • 4. A John Wollaston (Wullaston) of London diocese passed through various clerical grades in 1501 and was ordained priest (on the title of Holywell Priory) on 5 June 1501 (Davis, 15692).
  • 5. A Ralph Kempe of London diocese passed through various clerical grades in 1503–4 being ordained priest on the title of Syon Abbey on 6 April 1504 (Davis, 15337).
  • 6. Gabriel Halhead of London diocese was ordained deacon on 28 March 1506 and priest 20 February 1507 on the title of Southwark Priory (Davis, 23511).
  • 7. Davy is noted as parish clerk and organ player at St Botolph Aldersgate from 1515–9 Sec Baillie, Biographical Notes.
  • 8. Among deaths for 1514 (547). Probably the Robert Hams (Hamme) who was a gentleman of the Chapel Royal. He left a will of 27 May, proved 31 May, 1514 (Westminster City Archives: Register Wyks, f. 97r) and was buried at St Margaret Westminster. See Biographical Dictionary of English Court Musicians.
  • 9. William Hollis, Kt, alderman 1528–42 and mayor 1539; master of the Mercers 1529. Also notable as the builder of the Coventry Cross and a member of that city's Holy Trinity guild (Register of the Trinity Guild, Coventry, ed MD Harris, Dugdale Society, 13 (1935), p 111). He died on 20 October 1542 (Beaven, II, 26) and his will mentioning his wife Elizabeth, admitted with him (488) was proved 18 December 1542 (PROB 11/29, f. 100v). His monument was erected in St Helen's Bishopsgate (Stow, Survey, ed Kingsford, I, 172).
  • 10. The executrix (Margaret Champney) of a Richard Champney of St Clement Eastcheap was named in Commissary court proceedings on 23 November 1509 (Guildhall MS 9171/3, f. 22v)
  • 11. Among deaths for 1513 (539) Perhaps the Nicholas Adams, of St Alphage London Wall, whose will was proved in 1512 (Guildhall MS 9168/3, f. 75r).
  • 12. A William Blundell, citizen and shearman, requested burial in the church of St Katherine Cree by his will of 14 February, proved 25 July, 1522 (PROB 11/20, f. 211v).
  • 13. Among deaths (as John Tyndley) for 1518 (588). Probably the John Tilney (Tylney), citizen and grocer, who requested burial in St Stephen Coleman Street before the image of the Blessed Trinity by his will of 11 May, proved November, 1518 (PROB 11/19, f. 88v). He had a deceased wife and by 1518 was married to Margaret, mentioned in his will, who survived him. A Margaret Tilney (Tynley) is among deaths for 1519 (601).
  • 14. Presumably identifiable (as the name is so unusual) with Oliver Claymond, citizen and clothworker, who requested burial in the church of All Hallows Staining by his will of 28 February, proved 15 May, 1540 (PROB 11/28, f. 29v). He was elected master of the Clothworkers in 1530 (see accounts for this year at Clothworkers' Hall) and served as churchwarden of All Hallows Staining in 1534–5 (A Povah, Annals of the parishes of St Olave Hart Street and All Hallows Staining in the City of London (1894), pp 328, 365, 387). We are grateful to David Wickham for supplying information about him.
  • 15. Among deaths for 1511 (518). Administration of the will of a John Moody (Mody), parishioner of St Stephen Coleman Street, was granted in 1511 (Guildhall MS 9168/3, f. 48r).
  • 16. Among deaths for 1519 (600). Probably the William Barkby, scrivener, of Holborn Bridge, who requested burial in the porch of St Sepulchre by his will of 21 January, proved 28 January, 1519 (Guildhall MS 9171/9, f. 112v). His wife Grace is mentioned there and a Grace Barkby was admitted with William below (488).
  • 17. Presumably the Robert Brocket (Brokett), citizen and baker, who requested burial in the church of St Martin Ironmonger Lane by his will of 6 January 1532, proved 23 September 1533 (PROB 11/25, f. 31r). Among other bequests he left 3s 4d to the parish clerks' and Pappey fraternities respectively.

  • 19. Among deaths for 1514 (549). Presumably the Matthew Baxter of St Thomas the Apostle whose assets were distributed in 1513 following renunciation of his will (Guildhall MS 9168/3, f. 99v). His widow, mentioned in the Commmissary court proceedings, was named Alice and an Alice Baxter was admitted with Matthew below (488).
  • 20. Perhaps the Stephen Hudson, girdler, who requested burial beside his parents in the church of St Thomas of Acon (although he was a parishioner of Bow, Middlesex) by his will of 20 June, proved 1 July, 1509 (PROB 11/20, f. 93r). His wife Helen is mentioned there and a Helen Hudson was admitted with Stephen below (488).
  • 21. Among deaths for 1520 (610). Probably the John Palmer, citizen and cooper, who requested burial before the image of St James in St Michael Bassishaw by his will of 11 March, proved 21 May, 1520 (PROB 11/20, f. 5v). His wife Julian, mentioned there, survived him and a Julian Palmer was admitted with John below (488).

William Penreth, brewer, left 3s 4d to the Pappey brotherhood to bring him to burial in the church of the Crutched Friars, London (although a parishioner of St Andrew Undershaft) and 3s 4d to the parish clerks' fraternity by his will of 17 January, proved 31 January, 1527 (Guildhall MSS 9171/10, f. 87r; 9168/7, ff. 187v, 188v).

  • 32. Perhaps the Robert Cooper (Cowper) of Chichester diocese who studied music at Cambridge, proceeding DMus in 1506–7. He was ordained in 1498, served as canon of Wingham, Kent 1511–30 and had died by January 1540 (Emden, BRUC to 1500). See also New Grove Dictionary for his musical compositions.
  • 33. Presumably the William Robinson of York diocese who had proceeeded DCnL at Cambridge by 1490. He was rector of St Martin Outwich 1502–16, of St Peter Cheap 1509–16, of Barley, Herts 1515–6, and left a will of 11 June, proved 26 June, 1516 in Ely diocese (Cambridge University Library: Ely consistory court register D, f. 55v) which helps to explain the omission of his death from BR. See Emden BRUC to 1500. William also acted as executor of his brother Nicholas who died in 1504 (Emden, BRUC to 1500) and a Nicholas Robinson is among priests admitted in 1504 (423).
  • 34. Robert Ashlyn (Aslyn) was subdean of St Paul's in 1520 (W Sparrow Simpson, The Charter and Statutes of the College of the Minor Canons in St Paul's Cathedral (1871), p 35, statute 38 and Guildhall MS 5872A/1, f. 1, a transcript of payments to staff at St Paul's). He is probably the Robert Aslyn ordained acolyte in London on 24 September 1496 (Davis, 12216). By his will of 22 July, proved 20 August, 1539 he requested burial in the cloister churchyard there and left 3s 4d to the parish clerks' fraternity for attendance at his burial (PROB 11/27, f. 234v).
  • 35. A George Horne, son of a New College tenant in London was admitted a scholar at Winchester College in 1492, aged 11. He became a scholar 1496, and fellow 1498, of New College, Oxford, proceeding BCL in 1506–7 (Emden, BRUO to 1500). It is not clear if this individual is the priest ordained on the title of St Bartholomew's Hospital on 1 June 1504 (Davis, 14619). He is probably the Horne listed as a minor canon of St Paul's in the early 1520s (Guildhall MS 5872A/1, f. 2) as he was admitted with Robert Ashlyn, immediately above.
  • 36. Among deaths for 1512 (525). A Master Thomas Love proceeded BA in 1500 and MA in 1502 at Cambridge where he was a sizar 1500–1, and fellow 1502–3, of Queens' College (Emden, BRUC to 1500). He had London connections, as he was ordained subdeacon and deacon there in 1501–2 (Emden, BRUC to 1500 and Davis, 14968). Probably identifiable with the Thomas Love, priest, who requested burial at the Whitefriars, London, and left 3s 4d to the high altar of St Bride's and 12d to St Paul's by his will of 12 February, proved 4 March, 1512 (PROB 11/17, f. 46v).
  • 37. A Richard Turner appears as a minor canon of St Paul's in the early 1520s (see MS notes in Guildhall Library's copy of W Sparrow Simpson, The Charter and Statutes of the College of the Minor Canons in St Paul's Cathedral (1871) and the transcript of payments to staff at St Paul's, Guildhall MS 5872A/1, f. 2).
  • 38. Perhaps the John Towne of London diocese ordained there as subdeacon on 15 February, deacon 22 March, and priest 20 September, 1505 (Davis, 14973).
  • 39. Presumably the John Osborne, parish priest of St Andrew Undershaft, who requested burial before the high altar in the chancel there. He left 10s to the parish clerks' fraternity and 10s to the Pappey fraternity by his will of 1 August 1524, proved 1 February 1528 (PROB 11/22, f. 211v).
  • 40. Perhaps the William Nelson of London diocese ordained deacon on 7 April 1508 and priest (on the title of St Mary's Hospital Bishopsgate) 3 March 1509 (Davis, 21557).
  • 41. Perhaps the Thomas Gentleman (Gentilman/Gentylman) of London diocese ordained subdeacon on 3 March, deacon 24 March, and priest (on the title of Elsing Spital) 7 April 1509 (Davis, 15690).
  • 42. Junior master and parish clerk of St Matthew Friday Street in 1518 (579).
  • 43. Dr Fiona Kisby identifies Moore as the master of the choristers and parish clerk of St Margaret Westminster in the period 1526–37 and who then appears as parish clerk at St Martin in the Fields from 1538–40 ('Music and musicians in early Tudor Westminster', Early Music (May 1995), 223–40, especially 235–7.) The name however is a common one and this leaves an awkward gap in his career from 1510–26.
  • 44. Perhaps the John Webb who was parish clerk of St Dionis Backchurch in 1510 (Mc Murray, Index).
  • 45. Probably the Richard Lye who was parish clerk of St Magnus Martyr in 1523 (Christie, p 55), Baillie, Biographical Notes, conflates him, apparently erroneously, with the Richard Lee who was a clerk of St Mary at Hill 1511–2, conduct of St Stephen's Westminster 1515 and master of the choristers at St Anthony's Hospital 1521. The latter appears to have had an entirely different career as a musician.

  • 47. Among deaths (as Gregory Hutchyn) for 1520 (609). He appears as parish clerk of St Margaret Pattens among the churchwardens' accounts there for 1511–3 (Baillie, Biographical Notes).
  • 48. Wife of Bartholomew Ody, master, above (496). She was the chief beneficiary of his will proved in 1538 (Guildhall MS 25626/1, f. 6v) and was still living in the parish clerks' almshouses adjacent to their hall off Bishopsgate in 1549 (Christie, p 95).
  • 49. Probably the William Calley, citizen and draper, with property in St Margaret Loth- bury and Andover, Hants. He left a will of 24 April 1515 naming John Calley as his heir, with a separate testament mentioning his wife Maud, with probate of 25 June 1515 (PROB 11/18, f. 52v). A Maud Calley was admitted with him in 1510 (502) and a John Calley is among deaths for 1515 (559).
  • 50. John Thurston, broderer, who was translated to the Goldsmiths' Company 30 August 1515, serving as an alderman 1515–20 and prime warden of the Goldsmiths in 1520 (Beaven, II, 23). By his will of 12 January 1520 (codicil 20 July, proved 8 August, 1520) he requested burial in the tomb on the right hand side of the high altar at St Vedast which he had made there (PROB 11/20, f. 181r). Thurston left 6s 8d to the parish clerks' fraternity to be present at his burial, and the same amount to the brotherhood of Sixty Priests and the Pappey brotherhood 'whereof I am a brother' to bring his body to burial. His wife Elizabeth who survived him also left 6s 8d to the parish clerks' fraternity to pray for her soul in her will of 22 March, proved 2 May, 1521 (PROB 11/20, f. 183v).
  • 51. Perhaps the John Joyner, Norroy King of Arms, who died intestate. Administration of his goods was granted to his trustee William Seymour on 8 July 1523 (PROB 11/21, f. 88r).
  • 52. Among deaths for 1516 (568). Richard Grey, ironmonger and alderman 1513–5, was buried in the church of St Michael Queenhithe (Stow, Survey, ed Kingsford, II, 5). By his will of 20 October, proved 26 November, 1515 he left bequests of 6s 8d to the Pappey and Sixty Priests' fraternities and 20d to every other London brother- hood for their prayers (PROB 11/18, f. 21v). His wife Anne, who acted as his executrix, was admitted with him below (502).
  • 53. A John Worsop (Worsopp), scrivener, of St Vedast served as warden of the Jesus guild at St Paul's in 1526–7 and 1527–8 (New, Cult of the Holy Name of Jesus, p 419). He left a will of 28 August, proved 7 November, 1538 (PROB 11/27, f. 177v).

  • 56. Among deaths (as Thomas Maynord) for 1515 (559). Probably the Thomas Maynard of London whose will of 3 May, proved 15 May, 1515 mentions his wife Agnes (PROB 11/18, f. 43v). An Agnes Maynard was admitted with Thomas below (502).
  • 57. A John Cawnton, haberdasher, served as alderman 1523–8 and was elected sheriff in 1525 (Beaven II, 25).
  • 58. Probably the Robert Preston, citizen and goldsmith, parishioner of St Matthew Friday Street, whose wife Margery is mentioned as executrix of his will of 3 November 1522, proved 15 December 1523 (PROB 11/21, f. 118r). A Margery Preston was admitted with Robert below (502).
  • 59. Reynold Ecclesfield (Eglisfield), citizen and shcarman, requested burial in the church of All Hallows the Great by his will of 26 April, proved 13 May, 1523 (PROB 11/21, f. 51r). He left 3s 4d to the Pappey and parish clerks' brotherhoods respectively to attend his burial 'and doo for my soule as the use and custume is to do for a brother'. His wife and executrix Anne is mentioned there and was probably the Anne Ecclesfield (Ekelysfeld) admitted below (502).
  • 60. Widow of Bartholomew Reed (Rede), Kt, alderman and goldsmith, among deaths for 1506 (454). Both were also members of the Jesus guild at St Paul's (New, Cult of the Holy Name, Appendix 3, p 400). She requested burial at St John Zachary in a tomb forming the base of the Easter sepulchre there by her will of 12 April 1531 (with subsequent codicil and memoranda) proved 31 January 1533 (PROB 11/24, f. 168v).
  • 61. Among deaths below (508). An Elizabeth Greystoke de ture 6th Baroness Grey- stoke, was born 10 July 1471 and married Thomas Dacre, 2nd Lord Dacre of Gilsland. She left a will of 14 May, proved 16 July, 1509 (PROB 11/16, f. 120r).
