  • 1. Thomas Skevington or Skeffington, bishop of Bangor, whose will of 10 May, was proved 21 August, 1533 (PROB 11/25, f. 28v). He was previously abbot of Waverley, Surrey from c1478 and became abbot of Beaulieu, Hants from 1508 holding this latter abbacy in commendam with his bishopric (Emden, BRUO to 1500).
  • 2. Probably the Andrew Young who was a chaplain of the Chapel Royal 1520–31 (Biographical Dictionary of English Court Musicians). He was rector of Bennington and Wyberton, Lincs (by 1526), rector of North Tidworth, Wilts 1530 and a canon of Crediton, Devon, who had vacated by 1531 (Emden, BRUO 1501–1540, Appendix A; Biographical Dictionary). Dr Magnus Williamson has identified his will of 18 May 1530, compiled while still in London, and proved 21 October 1535 (Lincolnshire Wills, ed CW Foster, Lincolnshire Record Society (1918), II, 206). In this he requested burial in the cloister of St Paul's Cathedral or in the [Franciscan] friary at Greenwich. Robert Cotes 'of the Kynges chapell' and Dr Hickman 'pety canon of Pollys' (561) are named with certain Lincolnshire clergy among the witnesses. Williamson has established that this is probably the individual of the same name who joined the Corpus Christi fraternity at Boston in the 1530s and may also be the Andrew Young who was previously a chap- lain-fellow of Tattershall College in 1503–4 (HMC Report on the Manuscripts of Lord De L'Isle and Dudley, I, 195).
  • 3. A William Wright is recorded as organist and morrow mass priest of St Martin Outwich from 1508–12 (Baillie, Biographical Notes).
  • 4. William Pasche (flor. 1513–37), musician and composer. From c1519–26 he was one of the six lay vicars of St Paul's but had left before June 1534. Perhaps identi- fiable with the choir clerk of this name at St Peter Cheap in 1527–8 and the William Pasche who received payment from the parish church of Kingston-upon-Thames for the oversight of the organs there in 1514–5 and 1536–7 (New Grove Dictionary). It is assumed there that the Enwryth (not Embryth as cited in Grove) Pasche among deaths for 1517 (578) is his wife.
  • 5. A Richard Hole appears as a conduct at St Margaret Pattens in the churchwardens' accounts for 1512–3. Baillie, Biographical Notes, suggests he may be identical with the interluder of 1526–30 noted in EK Chambers, The Elizabethan Stage (1923), 2, p 495, but this is unlikely as ecclesiastical and secular musicians normally pursued completely different careers in this period.
  • 6. Perhaps the Nicholas Sayer who appears in the churchwardens' accounts as parish clerk and organ player at St Botolph Aldersgate between 1519 and 1523 (Baillie, Biographical Notes and Mc Murray, Index).
  • 7. 'Yoman of ye crowne' is added as a gloss.
  • 8. Edward Redknap, citizen and mercer, who requested burial in the church of St Anne and St Agnes (although described as a parishioner of St James Cripplegate) by his will of 4 November, proved 17 December, 1524 (PROB 11/21, f. 225v). He left 6s 8d to the Pappey fraternity (of which he was a brother) and the parish clerks' fraternity respectively to pray for the souls of himself and his family.
  • 9. Presumably the Edward Murrell or Muriell, citizen and grocer, who requested burial in the church of St Mary Magdalen Milk Street with his wife Martin by his will of 6 September, proved 7 December, 1537 (PROB 11/27, f. 97v). She acted as his executrix. His wife's name is rare, and a Martin Muriell (Muryell) was admitted with Edward below (536)

  • 11. William Copynger, alderman 1505–13, mayor from 1512 until his death on 7 February 1513 (Beaven, II, 21). A fishmonger, he requested burial with his late wife Agnes in the chancel of St Mildred Bread Street by his will of 22 November 1512, proved 1 March 1513 (PROB 11/17, f. 99r). His wife mentioned there was Margaret who was listed among the dead with him (as Domina Copynger) below (540).
  • 12. This may be Alice Trewethall, prioress of St Helens, Bishopsgate, who is attested there in 1488 and 1497–8. The next prioress recorded, Elizabeth Stamp, was in office in 1512 which indicates a change in the headship of the house at this point, although it is possible that there was an intervening incumbent. See VCH London, I, 461.
  • 13. See William Copynger above (539). Margaret Copynger's executors were named in 1513 (Guildhall MS 9168/3, f. 90r).
  • 14. The scribe has been completely inconsistent here in failing to decline the name of William Walton and his church but then placing the name of John Lawrence and his church in the genitive case as the sense demands.
  • 15. Identified as the Thomas Hall who is recorded as a priest of the Chapel Royal 1511–40 (Biographical Dictionary of English Court Musicians). He left a will of 28 July, proved 9 October, 1540 (PROB 11/28, f. 99v). Although the name is rela- tively common, he may have been a member of the parish clerks' fraternity as the parish clerk of St Audoen was a witness to his will.
  • 16. Perhaps the Master John Pearce (Pers) who was rector of St Vedast in 1508. One of the same name was inducted or re-installed in 1523 and died in 1536. Sec Hennessy, p 433.
  • 17. John Larke was rector of St Ethelburga, Bishopsgate 1505–42 and of Holy Trinity, Chelsea, where Sir Thomas More presented him to the living (Hennessy, pp 120, 153). He was attainted in 1544 for opposition to Henry VIII's religious policies, the only City incumbent to suffer execution for his religious opinions in this reign.
  • 18. A Walter Carr (Carre), priest of St Mary Overy, was cited to appear at a visitation of Southwark in 1492 (Lambeth Palace Library: Register Morton, f. 79v).
  • 19. Thomas Baschurch was admitted to Winchester College in 1489; subsequently scholar 1493, and fellow 1495–8 of New College, Oxford. Originating from Worcester diocese, he proceeded through various clerical grades from 1499 until ordained priest on 26 March 1502. Subsequently rector of St Leonard Eastcheap 1520–38 and secretary to Archbishop Warham. Dead by January 1538. See Emden, BRUO to 1500 and Davis 18708.
  • 20. Edmund Close BD, rector of St Augustine Watling Street in 1507 and of St George Botolph Lane 1533–5, when he died (Hennessy, pp 98, 109).
  • 21. Among deaths for 1515 (556). Edmund Stainbank (Stanbank) was rector of St James Garlickhithe 1510–4 (Hennessy, pp 248, cxiii) By his will of 7 September 1514, proved 29 November 1515, he requested burial in the chancel there (PROB 11/18, f. 95r).
  • 22. Perhaps the William Finch, Premonstratensian canon of Beeleigh Abbey, Essex, who was ordained priest in St Paul's on 10 June 1514 (Davis, 12260) rather than the individual of the same name who was prior of Breamore, Hants 1511–36 and bishop of Taunton 1538–58 (Emden, BRUO 1501–1540).
  • 23. A Robert Thomson (Tomson) was noted as a conduct in the churchwardens' accounts for St Margaret Pattens in 1512–3 (Baillie, Biographical Notes). Another parish clerk of this name was in post at St Audoen in 1544, when he is mentioned in the will of Henry Home (PROB 11/30, f. 109v).
  • 24. A Henry Talbot (Talbott), singing man, requested burial in the churchyard of St Lawrence Jewry by his will of 31 March, proved 13 July, 1543 (Guildhall MS 9171/11, f. 101r).
  • 25. Presumably the Henry Fink who is noted as parish clerk of St Stephen Walbrook among the churchwardens' accounts for 1518–32 (Baillie, Biographical Notes). The latter had a wife Joan who was still engaged in various tasks around the church in 1536–7 and a Joan Fink is among admissions for 1518 (582).
  • 26. Probably the John Snow who was parish clerk of St Mary at Hill between 1513 and 1521 when he was succeeded by Roger Mason. See H Littlehales, Medieval records of a London City church, Early English Text Society (1905), p xix.
  • 27. Baillie, Biographical Notes, identifies him with the Andrew Allen, conduct of St Mary at Hill, noted there in the churchwardens' accounts for 1527–8.
  • 28. Identified as the Philip Clinch (Clynch) who was a gentleman of the Chapel Royal by 1527 and who remained in post until his death in 1535 (Biographical Dictionary of English Court Musicians). By his will of 16 September, proved 26 September, 1535 (PROB 11/25, f. 198v) he left his second doublet to Richard Lye, parish clerk, of London.
  • 29. Richard Materverse is probably identifiable with the parish clerk of that name of St Margaret Pattens who appears in the churchwardens' accounts there for 1518–21. He was also paid 'for oure lady Messe & antemns' (Baillie, Biographical Notes).
  • 30. Possibly the Nicholas Elyngden (Eluysden) who was a conduct at St Dunstan in the East in 1500 (Baillie, Biographical Notes) and probably the individual of this name (Elmeden) who was a member of Lady Margaret Beaufort's chapel by 1507 (Kisby, Royal Household Chapel, Appendix 5).
  • 31. Among deaths for 1516 (566). A Richard May is recorded as a singing man who assisted the choir of St Dunstan in the East in the churchwardens' accounts there for 1500–1 (Baillie, Biographical Notes).
  • 32. Among deaths for 1519 (598). A William Geoffrey (Jeffray) was paid £1 for singing in the choir at St Margaret Pattens throughout the year 1506–7 (Guildhall MS 4570/1, f. 1v).
  • 33. The title 'Mr' has not been expanded in this column, since it is unclear whether 'Magister' or 'Master' is intended. English forms of names are used, but the abbre- viation 'Mra' for 'Magistra' among the laywomen followed by English or Latin forms of names suggests that either form might be intended.
  • 34. Robert Amadas, citizen and goldsmith, left a will of 3 July 1531, of which admin- istration was granted on 28 November 1533 (PROB 11/25, f. 38v). He bequeathed 10s to the parish clerks' fraternity to pray for his soul. Robert's wife Elizabeth is mentioned there and a Mistress Elizabeth Amadas was admitted with him below (545). Amadas served as master of the King's jewels and was buried under St George's chapel within St Mary Woolnoth (Stow, Survey, ed Kingsford, I, 205).
  • 35. Later Sir Brian Tuke, Treasurer of the Chamber under Henry VIII (DNB). His will of 26 September, proved 7 December, 1545 (PROB 11/31, f. 8r) mentions his wife Grisel admitted with him below (545), who survived her husband. They were buried in St Margaret Lothbury (Stow, Survey, ed Kingsford, I, 283).
  • 36. Perhaps the John Lake who requested burial within the church of St Antholin by his will of 28 May, proved 22 August, 1522 (PROB 11/20, f. 219v). His wife and exec- utrix Dorothy is mentioned there and a Dorothy Lake was admitted with John below (545).
  • 37. Possibly the John Palterton, goldsmith, who requested burial in the chapel of Saints Mary and Dunstan at St Vedast by his will proved on 16 November 1537 (PROB 11/27, f. 89r). An Agatha Palterton was admitted with John below (545), but the name of Palterton's wife is not given in the will.
  • 38. Among deaths for 1520 (610). Probably the William Hilton who was tailor to Henry VIII and was buried in the church of St Mary Woolnoth (Stow, Survey, ed Kingsford, I, 205) leaving a will of 5 October, proved 10 October, 1519 (PROB 11/19, f. 169v). His wife Joan is mentioned there and a Joan Hilton was admitted with William below (545).
  • 39. A Morgan Williams, citizen and scrivener, requested burial in the church of St Thomas of Acon (although a parishioner of St Pancras Soper Lane) by his will of 29 April, proved 16 May, 1516. His death is not recorded on BR.
  • 40. Perhaps the Thomas Gale, citizen and haberdasher, who requested burial before the choir door of St George Botolph Lane by his will of 27 August 1540, proved 10 January 1541 (PROB 11/28, f. 153r). He left 12d to the parish clerk for his dirige and ringing of bells and 6d each to the two other clerks there. His funerary monu- ment is noticed by Stow, Survey, ed Kingsford, I, 210 (where it is incorrectly dated). His wife and executrix Elizabeth, is mentioned in his will and an Elizabeth Gale was admitted with Thomas below (545).
  • 41. Perhaps the John Raynes, citizen and stationer, who requested burial in the Pardon churchyard of St Paul's next to his late wife Joan by his will of 8 April 1543, proved 26 February 1545 (PROB 11/30, f. 180 Ar). He was a parishioner of St Faith whose later wife Lucy survived him. A Joan Raynes (Reynys) was admitted with John below (545).
  • 42. Presumably Thomas Cavendish, an Exchequer official, and ancestor of the Dukes of Devonshire. He requested burial in the north aisle of the choir of St Thomas of Acon next to his grandfather William (if he died in London) by his will of 13 April, proved 22 August, 1524 (PROB 11/21, f. 183r). A parishioner of St Alban Wood Street and warden of the Trinity guild of St Botolph Aldersgate in 1499–1500 (Basing, Parish Fraternity Register, 143). This Cavendish was married to Agnes by the time of his will; if the identification is correct the Alice Cavendish among admissions for 1514 and (as Alicia Candysch) deaths for 1516 (545, 569) must be an earlier wife.

  • 44. A John Hosier, citizen and mercer, left a will of 25 September 1518, proved 19 March 1521 (PROB 11/20, f. 45r).
  • 45. Presumably the William Potkin (Potkyn), gentleman, of London and registrar of the Archbishop of Canterbury. He requested burial in the upper chancel of St John Zachary by his will of 10 January, proved 30 April, 1538 (PROB 11/27, f. 122v). This refers to monies due from the estate of Peter Potkin, priest, who is among deaths for 1520 (607). William was a man of substantial means, being assessed on property of £200 under the last part of the lay subsidy of 26–27 Henry VIII shortly before his death (Mc Murray, Records of Two City Parishes, p 243).
  • 46. Among deaths for 1519, where he is described as 'late skwyer' (600). Probably the Nicholas Boughton (Bouelon) of Woolwich, Kent who requested burial next to his late wife Anne in the new chapel he had built within the parish church there by his will of 26 February 1518, proved 23 February 1519 (PROB 11/19, f. 113v). His son Edward is named as his executor and an Edward Boughton was admitted with Nicholas (544).
  • 47. Perhaps the Robert Cressy, citizen and writer of court letter, for which there survives an extent for debt of 1521–2 (M Carlin, London and Southwark Invento- ries 1316–1650 (1997), 593).
  • 48. Edward Boughton, of Woolwich, Kent who requested burial in the parish church there by his will of 12 August 1549, proved 8 July 1550 (PROB 11/33, f. 147r). He was knighted in 1527 (Shaw, Knights of England, II, 46). See also Nicholas Boughton (544).
  • 49. Probably the John Wilkinson, alderman 1517–21 and master of the Drapers in 1518 (Beaven, II, 24). By his will of 19 August, proved 30 October, 1521 he requested burial in the Trinity chapel of St Mary Abchurch (PROB 11/20, f. 109v). His wife Ellen survived him, acting as his executrix, and an Ellen Wilkinson was admitted with John below (545).
  • 50. A John Milborne (Mylbourne), alderman 1510–36, mayor 1521 and Kt 1522, was four times master of the Drapers (Beaven II, 22). By his will of 10 June 1535, proved 12 May 1536, he left 20s to the Fraternity of Sixty Priests of which he was a brother (PROB 11/25, f. 264v).
  • 51. Presumably the John Taverner, citizen and stationer, who requested burial in the chapel of St Anne and St Thomas the Martyr in the Pardon churchyard of St Paul's where his tomb had been erected (he was a parishioner of St Faith) by his will of 27 November 1529, proved 30 November 1531 (PROB 11/24, f. 81v). Taverner left 3s 4d to the Pappey and parish clerks' fraternity respectively to pray for his soul. He was admitted with an Agnes Taverner (Tavernar) below (545), but by 1529 he was married to the Anne mentioned in his will. This evidence vindicates the contention of Roger Bowers that the John Taverner here is not the ecclesiastical musician and composer who died in 1545 (see New Grove Dictionary) on the grounds that he is listed among the laymen rather than among the parish and choir clerks.
  • 52. John Skeffington, merchant taylor; alderman 1521–5, knighted c1522 (Beaven, II, 24). He was buried in the choir of the Crutched Friars' church by the Tower (Stow, Survey, ed Kingsford, I, 147). His will of 31 December 1524, proved 22 December 1525 notes him as a parishioner of St Mary Woolnoth and names his wife as Eliza- beth, presumably the Elizabeth Skeffington admitted with him below (545).
  • 53. James Spencer, master of the Vintners 1516–9, alderman 1516–44, mayor 1527, Kt 1528, who died in February 1544 (Beaven, II, 24). By his will of 24 January (codicil 5 February) 1544, he requested burial in the church of St James Garlick- hythe and left 10s to the parish clerks' fraternity to attend his burial and pray for his soul (PROB 11/30, f. 76v). His late wife Elinor is mentioned there as buried in the above church and an 'Elena' Spencer was admitted below (545).
  • 54. Among deaths for 1515 (558). John Bedill (Bedyll), citizen and tallowchandler, who requested burial in the Lady chapel of St John the Evangelist by his will of 5 May, proved 23 May, 1515 (PROB 11/18, f. 50r). He left 10s for the maintenance of the parish clerks' fraternity. His wife Thomasine who survived him was admitted below (544).
  • 55. Presumably the Alexander Glastor, citizen and shearman, who requested burial in the church of St Mary Woolnoth (if he died in London) by his will of 10 October 1521, proved 11 April 1522 (PROB 11/20, f. 201v). His wife 'Ellyn' is named there and an Elinor Glastor was admitted below (544).

His wife Maud was admitted above (545).
  • 71. A Master Richard Collingbourne, of St Sepulchre, left a will proved on 1 December [1513] (Guildhall MS 9168/3, f. 98v).
  • 72. Perhaps the John Dogget the Elder, citizen and merchant taylor, who served as sheriff in 1509 and who requested burial in the choir of St John the Evangelist by his will of 15 February, proved 26 June, 1514 (PROB 11/17, f. 205v). Stow records his monument there (Survey, ed Kingsford, I, 351).
  • 73. Sir Robert Southwell, Kt, requested burial in the church of the Blackfriars, London, if he died within forty miles of it by his will of 23 April 1513, proved 1 June 1514 (PROB 11/18, f. 33r). The Domina Ursula Southwell among deaths for 1508 (481) may have been a previous wife (Elizabeth is the spouse named in his will).
  • 74. Sir Thomas Englefield, Kt, of Englefield, Berks. His will of 4 March was proved 14 April, 1514 (PROB 11/17, f. 262r).
  • 75. Robert Rochester, esquire, sergeant of the pantry to Henry VIII. His sepulchral brass recording his death in 1514 was placed in St Helen's Bishopsgate (British Library Add MS 32,490, BB.13 and Stow, Survey, ed Kingsford, I, 172).
