By his will of 15 April, proved 2 August, 1525 he requested burial in the choir of All Hallows (PROB 11/21, f. 283v).
  • 5. Rector of St Clement Eastcheap before 1510 until 1544 when he died (Hennessy, p 129). It is not clear whether this is the priest of Winchester diocese ordained on 27 March 1501 (Davis, 11295). Another John Christmas is among admissions for 1507 (459).
  • 6. Perhaps the Roger Ward from Coventry and Lichfield diocese who passed through various clerical grades in 1516–7 and was ordained priest in London diocese (on the title of Elsing Spital) on 11 April 1517 (Davis, 15078).
  • 7. Rowland (or Reginald) Jewkes (Jokys), of Worcester diocese, MA 1514, fellow of All Souls College Oxford 1509–15. Ordained priest in London diocese on 15 April 1514, he was rector of St Margaret Pattens 1515–38, when he was deprived (Emden, BRUO 1501–1540)
  • 8. Also among deaths for 1517 (577). Derek Obell, citizen and brewer, parishioner of All Hallows Barking, left a will of 23 June 1515, proved 24 April 1517 (PROB 11/18, f. 222r). His wife Barbara, mentioned there, was admitted with him below (574).
  • 9. Perhaps the Richard Cull the Elder, citizen and grocer, who requested burial in the church of St Giles Cripplegate by his will of 6 November 1554, proved 6 May 1555 (PROB 11/37, f. 193v). His wife Alice is mentioned there, and an Alice Cull was admitted with Richard below (574).
  • 10. Perhaps the Robert Isotson, citizen and carpenter, who requested burial in the churchyard of St Dionis Backchurch, and whose will of 11 February, was proved 26 March, 1546 (PROB 11/31, f. 41r). His wife in 1546 is named as Joan. BR records (i) a Joan Isotson among admissions for 1517 (574) and deaths for 1518 (589) and (ii) a layman's wife of this name admitted in 1519 (596).
  • 11. Among deaths for 1518 (588). Perhaps the Henry Harrison, cooper, of All Hallows Barking, who left a will of 6 September, proved 15 December, 1517 (Guildhall MS 9171/9, f. 48r). His wife Elizabeth is mentioned there and an Elizabeth Harrison (Harryson) was admitted with Henry below (574).
  • 12. Margaret, widow of William Capell or Capel, alderman, is among deaths for 1516 (568). She was the daughter of Sir Thomas Arundell (Thrupp, p 328).
  • 13. See Derek Obell (573, 577). Barbara survived her husband, acting as an executor of his will.

  • 17. Probably the Robert Knight, scholar of Winchester (admitted 1459) and of New College, Oxford (admitted 1465) where he remained as a fellow 1467–76. Proceeded BCL and a notary public by 1473. Ordained priest 24 September 1474 on the title of his fellowship and rector of St Michael Wood Street 1481–1517 (Emden, BRUO to 1500). By his will of 18 December 1515, proved 24 March 1517, he requested burial within the chancel door at St Michael's (Darlington, London Consistory Court Wills, 37).
  • 18. A Thomas White (Whyte), citizen and skinner, who requested burial in the church of St Peter Cornhill, left bequests to the priests and clerks of this church to attend his obit by his will of 11 May 1512, proved 6 August 1516 (PROB 11/18, f. 165v).
  • 19. A Thomas Raymond (Raymonde), citizen and grocer, requested burial in the church of St Mary Colechurch by his will of 8 September, proved 19 September, 1516 (PROB 11/18, f. 172r).
  • 20. Probably the Margaret Alexander, widow, who left a nuncupative will of 8 January, proved (?)5 March, 1517 (Guildhall MS 9171/9, f. 16r). She requested burial next to her late husband Thomas in the church of All Hallows Lombard Street (although a parishioner of St Nicholas Acons). Her son Paul Alexander was granted adminis- tration of her will and an individual of this name appears among admissions for 1514 (544).
  • 21. John Bradwell passed through various clerical grades from 1497 until his ordina- tion as priest on 18 April 1500 (Davis, 10748). He was prior of Holy Trinity Aldgate c1509–24. The usual dates given for his priorate are 1510–24 (Hennessy, p 125 and VCH London, I, 474) but he is noted in that office in 1509 (Catalogue of Ancient Deeds, I, A 1773). He served as alderman of Portsoken ward 1512–24 when he died (Beaven, II, 23).
  • 22. Attested as prioress of St Helen's in 1512, she resigned that office in 1528 (VCH London, I, 461).
  • 23. Among deaths for 1519 (597). John Barnaby MA, apparently from Sher- burn-in-Elmet, Yorks, was resident at University College, Oxford from 1504–5 to 1508–9 and later rector of St Matthew Friday Street (Emden, BRUO to 1500). He requested burial in the chancel of the latter before the high altar by his will of 16 December 1517, proved 22 December 1518, and left 10s to the parish clerks' frater- nity (Darlington, London Consistory Court Wills, 77).
  • 24. Henry Meadow has been plausibly identified by Dr Fiona Kisby as a singing man at St Stephen's Westminster in 1525 and (following Baillie, Biographical Notes) less convincingly as the chantry priest Harry Meddows who taught the choristers at St Margaret's Westminster for half the year 1533–4. See Kisby, 'Music and musi- cians of early Tudor Westminster', Early Music (May 1995), 223–40, especially 235–7. It would represent a rare documented example of a choir clerk proceeding to ordination in London if correct.
  • 25. Perhaps the Andrew Higgins who was parish clerk of St Botolph Aldgate and noted in a legal case c1518 concerning exchange of his annual income for an annuity of £8 and his breach of the agreement (Baillie, Biographical Notes).
  • 26. Probably the Joan Fink who was the wife of Henry Fink, parish clerk of St Stephen Walbrook, and who is mentioned among the churchwardens' accounts there for 1536–7. This was presumably the clerk among admissions for 1514 (542).
  • 27. Thomas Brooke, 8th Baron Cobham, who died on 19 July 1529. See GEC Complete Peerage. His wife Elizabeth was admitted with him below (584).
  • 28. Michael English, alderman 1520–31 and master of the Mercers 1521 and 1528 (Beaven, II, 24). He requested burial in the church of St Dionis Backchurch by his will of 1 July 1527, proved 30 January 1539 (PROB 11/27, f. 193v). Presumably the Anne English admitted with him was his then wife (584) although his will refers only to his deceased wife Margaret.
  • 29. Among deaths for 1519 (600). Probably the Richard Chester of St Dunstan in the West, whose wife Alice was granted administration of his will on 19 November 1518 (Guildhall MS 9168/6, ff, 10r, 21v, 28r). An Alice Chester was admitted with Richard below (584).
  • 30. John Champneys, alderman 1527–56 and mayor 1534, who left a will of 28 July, proved 12 November, 1556 (PROB 11/38, f. 148r). He served on five occasions as master of the Skinners between 1527 and 1539. See Beaven, II, 26 and DNB. Henry Machyn, parish clerk, records his burial at Bexley, Kent on 8 October 1556 (Diary, ed JG Nichols, Camden Society (1848), p 115).
  • 31. Probably the Robert Fuller, citizen and grocer, who requested burial in the church of St Botolph Billingsgate by his will of 27 February, proved 30 May, 1524 (PROB 11/21, f. 159r). His wife Joan is mentioned there and a Joan Fuller (Fullar) was admitted with Robert below (584).

  • 39. Probably the William Dalton, citizen and skinner, who requested burial in the church of St Antholin, where his wives Elizabeth and Jane were buried, by his will of 16 August, proved 11 September, 1517 (PROB 11/18, f. 253v). A Joan Dalton appears among deaths for 1516 (569).
  • 40. Probably the John North, citizen and brewer, who requested burial 'ageynst my pew' in St Anne's chapel within St Bride's by his will of 27 November 1517, proved 16 January 1518 (Guildhall MS 9171/9, f. 63r). His wife Elinor is mentioned there and an Elinor North is among deaths for 1520 (611).
  • 41. Perhaps the Henry Brewster, merchant taylor, of St John Walbrook, whose will of 31 March, was proved 14 December, 1518 (Guildhall MS 9171/9, f. 104v). His wife Christina acted as his executrix and a Christina Colborn is among admissions for 1508 (475).
  • 42. A Nicholas Cocksey (Cokesey), citizen and armourer, requested burial in St Leonard Eastcheap by his will of 9 May, proved 18 May, 1518 (PROB 11/19, f. 66r).
  • 43. A Joan Sutton, relict of John Sutton, requested burial near to him in the churchyard of St Michael Cornhill by her will of 1 June 1515, proved 15 September [1517] (Guildhall MS 9171/9, f. 48v).
  • 44. Margaret Reeve, widow, who requested burial in the chapel of St John the Baptist within St Mary Colechurch by her will of 13 August 1517, proved 26 February 1518 (Guildhall MS 9171/9, f. 73r). She left 'an horne garnyshed with sylver' for use by the parish clerks' fraternity in their hall.
