  • 2. A trustee of fraternity property in 1473 (Christie, p 89); among deaths for 1491 (314). Tabbe is noted as a clerk of the Chapel of St Thomas on London Bridge 1469–72 (CLRO: Bridgemasters' accounts, vol. 3, ff. 169r, 183v, 197v). Chris- tianson, p 166, identifies him with a stationer of the same name active between 1433 and 1475, but the case is not proven.
  • 3. Among deaths for 1472 (145). Presumably the Benedict Boyes (Boys), chaplain, who requested burial at Whittington College by his will of 20 August, proved 17 September, 1471 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 93v). He left 3s 4d to the Pappey fraternity.
  • 4. Parish clerk of All Hallows the Great and junior master in 1478 (196); among deaths for 1489 (300). Presumably the Henry Crane of St Michael Queenhithe who left 10s to the parish clerks' fraternity and whose will (probate only) was proved on 15 March 1490 (Guildhall MS 9171/7, f. 148r). His wife Joan, mentioned there, is probably the Joan Crane among admissions for 1478 (199).
  • 5. Parish clerk of St Botolph Aldersgate (Mc Murray, Index) and senior master in 1486 (266); Bowgyn is among deaths for 1506 (453).
  • 6. Among deaths for 1472 (146) A William Gardener appears as a lay clerk at St George's Chapel Windsor among the entries in the Treasurer's rolls (non-consecu- tive) there between Michaelmas 1442 and Michaelmas 1461 (St George's Chapel Windsor Archives: xv.34.4 and 47).
  • 7. Among deaths for 1480 (220). Perhaps the Thomas Lowry (Loure) parish clerk of an unspecified Southwark parish who was sued c1475–80 (C 1/67/160). We are grateful to Graham Dawson for this reference.
  • 8. Among deaths for 1463 (83). Perhaps the John Lock (Lokke), mercer, of St Mary le Bow who was an alderman briefly in 1463 and died the same year. He was the son of Richard and Agnes Lock of Dalling, Norfolk and married Elizabeth, daughter of Eustace Valerian (Beaven, II, 12 and Thrupp, p 353). His will of 19 July 1459 was proved at some point in 1463 (PROB 11/5, f. 7r).
  • 9. Among deaths for 1469 (including entries for 1468) (123). John Palgrave, citizen and brewer, who requested burial in the church of St Botolph Bishopsgate before the image of St George, by his will of 31 October 1468, proved 17 January 1469 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 33r). He left 20d to the parish clerks' fraternity. His wife Isobel mentioned there, who survived him, was also admitted in 1463 (82) and is among deaths for 1470 (130).
  • 10. Among deaths for 1488 (293). Robert Swayne, citizen and fishmonger, who requested burial next to the body of his mother-in-law Julian Whaplode in the porch of St Margaret Fish Street Hill by his will of 9 June, proved 17 June, 1488 (Guild- hall MS 9171/7, f. 127v). She also appears among deaths for 1488 (293) where her name is written immediately before that of Robert. His wife Elizabeth is mentioned in his will and an Elizabeth Swayne is among admissions for 1474 (163).
  • 11. Among deaths for 1480 (222). A Thomas Turk, fishmonger, was a common coun- cilman for Bridge Ward in c1462 (Tucker).
  • 12. Among deaths for 1479 (211). Perhaps the Thomas Davy, of St George Southwark, whose will of 11 December 1478 was proved 1 February 1479 (PROB 11/6, f. 271r).
  • 13. Among deaths for 1467 (115). Henry Brice served as sheriff in 1466. A fuller living in Vintry ward in 1449, he was a common councilman for Langbourn c1462 (Tucker). Brice requested burial in the church of St Nicholas Acon by his will of 25 May, proved 28 July, 1467 (PROB 11/5, f. 153v). His wife Alice is also among admissions for 1463 (82) and survived him. He was probably related to Hugh Brice, later alderman, who acted as overseer of his will (Thrupp, p 326).
  • 14. Among deaths for 1484 (256). Perhaps the Richard Carter citizen and currier, who requested burial in St Alphage London Wall by his will of 16 March, proved 26 April, 1484 (Guildhall MS 9171/7, f. 2v). Carter was also a common councilman (Tucker). His widow Joan is named there and a Joan Carter is among admissions for 1463 (81).
  • 15. Probably William Vivian, as an individual of this name appears among deaths for 1470 (130).
  • 16. Robert Lety (Lete), citizen and brewer, requested burial in the cemetery of St Paul's in the tomb where his daughter Alice was buried by his will of 28 April, proved 6 May, 1468 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 25r). He left 3s 4d to the parish clerks' frater- nity in order that they should specially pray for his soul. His wife Isobel is mentioned in his will and is presumably the Isobel Lety admitted with Robert (82), who survived him.
  • 17. Among deaths for 1471 (138). Probably the Thomas Cottingham (Cotyngham), citizen and fishmonger, who requested burial next to his father John in the cemetery of St Margaret Fish Street Hill by his will of 10 September, proved 18 September, 1471 (Guildhall MS 917/6, f. 68r).
  • 18. Among deaths for 1482 (238). Kipping was the grocer of this name who was common councilman for Bridge ward c1462 (Tucker) and who requested burial with his late wife Maud in the north cemetery of St Margaret Fish Street Hill by his will of 25 June 1479, proved 18 June 1481 (PROB 11/7, f. 22r). Maud was admitted with him in 1463 (82) and is among deaths for 1476 (188).
  • 19. Among deaths for 1474 (169). Probably the Thomas Cricket (Crykett), citizen, fish- monger and former churchwarden of St Nicholas Cole Abbey who left a will of 2 February, proved 17 February, 1474 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 147r).
  • 20. Among deaths for 1475 (177). Probably the Thomas Picto, deceased husband of Katherine Picto, mentioned in her will of 12 September 1476, proved 26 September 1485, as buried in the Lady chapel of St Michael le Querne (Guildhall MS 9171/7, f. 27r).
  • 21. Among deaths for 1481 (229). Presumably the William Underwood, citizen and baker, of St Michael Bassishaw who left a will of 2 April, proved 17 April, 1481 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 316r). His wife Christina and previous wife Margaret are mentioned there. Margaret Underwood is among deaths for 1476 (188) and Chris- tina among admissions for 1477 (193).

Richard's second wife Elizabeth, mentioned in this will of 1463 and who acted as a co-executor, is apparently among admissions for 1463 (82) and deaths for 1464 (95).

William Deer (Dere), pewterer, alderman 1451–6 (Beaven, II, 10; Thrupp, p 336) requested burial in the choir of St Augustine Watling Street by his will of 6 June 1459, proved 4 February 1464 (PROB 11/5, f. 19v). Among many bequests he left 40s to the parish clerks' fraternity to chant a mass of the Virgin for his soul. See also Elyn or Elinor Deer (109).
  • 31. Perhaps the Thomas Benet who wished to be buried in the cemetery of St Giles Cripplegate with his late wife Alice and whose current wife in his will of 25 March 1463, proved 28 April 1464 (PROB 11/5, f. 26r) was named Margery. A Margery Benet appears among deaths for 1466 (109).
  • 32. It appears that f. 4v was originally left blank and that the following entries were added later in the 1460s. The crude hand employed is quite unlike that apparent on ff. 4r and 5r.
  • 33. It is not clear when these masters were in office. The entries below are additional ones relating to the years beginning on Ascension Day 1462 and (?)1463 on the basis of internal evidence, but each of these have appropriate masters assigned to them. The masters noted here are perhaps those for 1461, the only year prior to 1462 for which no separate entries exist.
  • 34. A trustee of parish clerks' property in 1473 (Christie, p 89).
  • 35. Among deaths for 1498 (368). John Aylmer is probably the 'parson' of St Clement Eastcheap who is noted there in 1461 and 1491 (Hennessy, p 129) and is mentioned in the will of his brother William Aylmer, grocer (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 164r). The latter appears among deaths for 1475 (177).
  • 36. Among deaths for 1465 (102). Perhaps the William Atkinson who was parish priest of St Anne and St Agnes and who was mentioned in the will of John Kettle (Ketill) of 1445 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 158a).
  • 37. William Payne was junior master in 1471 (131) and senior master in 1480 (213). A trustee of fraternity property in 1473 (Christie, p 89), he is noted among deaths for 1508 (477). The name of his church is not mentioned in the records of the parish clerks, but he may be the junior clerk of All Hallows Barking mentioned in an indenture of 16 October 1452 concerning the custody of parish plate and vestments (All Hallows by the Tower: AH/RR/J/5 Muniment 138). The senior clerk William Dobbs, mentioned in the same indenture, is recorded among deaths for 1457 on BR (53) which would fit in with the career progression of the Payne whose admission is recorded above.
  • 38. Among deaths (of laymen) for 1488 (293). Son of Henry Bannister (Banaster), yeoman of the royal household (died 1456); gentleman of the Chapel Royal by 1468, Master of the Children there by 1478 (New Grove Dictionary). Gilbert Bannister's will of 18 August, was proved 31 January, 1488 (PROB 11/8, f. 90v) in which he is described as 'gentleman' of East Greenwich; he was dead by 1 September 1487 (C 82/30/257). He also produced various literary works. See Kisby, Royal Household Chapel, Appendix 1.
  • 39. Among deaths for 1482 (237). Henry Emson (Emeson) was junior master in 1469 (117), senior master in 1477 (189) and a trustee of fraternity property in 1473 (Christie, p 89).
  • 40. Probably the John Wetherby who was a clerk of the second form at St George's Chapel Windsor between Michaelmas 1439 and Michaelmas 1449. See R Bowers' unpublished lists of Windsor musicians deposited in the archives there. This Wetherby was also an organ player at Windsor from 1440–3 and Bowers further identifies him with the master of the Lady chapel choir at Ely in 1466 (St George's Chapel Windsor in the Late Middle Ages, ed C Richmond and E Scarff (2001), p 189), although he follows Christie's erroneous dating for his admission on BR.

  • 42. Among deaths for 1467 (115). Presumably the Thomas Wesenham of St Olave, Southwark, who held property in Kent and Sussex, and left wills of 20 May 1466, proved 4 June 1467 (PROB 11/5, f. 141r). His wife Agnes is mentioned there, who survived him, and an Agnes Wesenham (Wesnam) is also among admissions below (88).
  • 43. Among deaths for 1463 (83). Probably the draper and common councilman associ- ated with Langbourn ward (Tucker) who was a parishioner of St Nicholas Acon, where he requested burial in the church by his will of 13 June, proved 2 July, 1463 (PROB 11/5, f.3r). His wife Elizabeth, is mentioned there, and an Elizabeth Payne (Payn) is among additional admissions for 1462 and (?)1463 (88).
  • 44. Among deaths for 1463 (83). Probably the citizen and pasteler, of St Katherine Cree, whose will of 26 November 1463 has two probates of 10 December 1463 attached (Guildhall MS 9171/5, ff. 349r, 350v). His wife is named there as Alice and an Alice Devereux (Deveros) is among additional admissions for 1462 and (?)1463 (88). John Beby, named as executor in the second probate is identifiable with the master of the parish clerks in 1463 (78).
  • 45. Among deaths for 1488 (293). Perhaps the William Field brewer and common councilman for Aldgate ward noted c1462 (Tucker). He was apparently a parish- ioner of St Andrew Undershaft who left a will of 22 November 1482, proved 5 November [?1487] (PROB 11/8, f. 36r).
  • 46. This group of entries is for clerks' wives.
  • 47. Presumably the wife of Richard Prideaux (Predioxe), parish clerk of St Margaret Westminster, among deaths for 1471 (137). If so, she was paid 8d in 1467–8 for the washing of the church's linen, a regular task for clerks' wives (Westminster City Archives: St Margaret's churchwardens' accounts (microfilm) E 1, p 85).
  • 48. Among deaths for 1488 (293). Agnes Cheyney was the daughter of John Young, Kt, grocer, who was mayor in 1466. She married (1) Robert Sherington (2) Robert Molineux and (3) William Cheyney esquire. A monument was erected to her at St Michael Paternoster Royal, of which she was a parishioner, but she requested burial close to her father at Whittington College (Stow, Survey, ed Kingsford, I, 243). Her will of 9 July 1480 was proved 23 June [1488] (PROB 11/8, f. 119v).

By her will of 28 June, proved 10 July, 1462, she requested burial in the Lady chapel of St Christopher le Stocks where her late husband John Gedney lay buried (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 327v).
  • 53. Perhaps the Walter Lucy, citizen and haberdasher, of St Faith, who requested burial beside his late wife Agnes in St Paul's churchyard by his will of 23 May 1462, proved 23 January 1463 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 336r). An Agnes Lucy is among deaths for 1454 (37).
  • 54. Margery Clopton requested burial next to the body of her late husband Robert Clopton, alderman, in the Lady chapel of St Peter Cornhill by her will of 25 September 1462 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 338r). She left 13s 4d to the parish clerks' fraternity to pray for her soul at the time of her exequies. Robert appears among deaths before 1449 (25).
  • 55. Perhaps the Thomas Goly, citizen and skinner, late husband of Agnes Goly, and mentioned in her will of 14 October 1465 (proved 9 July 1467) as having been buried in the church of St Anne and St Agnes (PROB 11/5, f. 152r).
  • 56. The presence of Richard Pollard among the deaths on f. 4v helps to date this year which has been interpolated amongst other annual entries for the 1450s. He was senior master in 1455 (a year securely dated from internal evidence relating to the deaths) and was noted as a trustee of the fraternity's property on 23 September 1461 (Christie, p 88).
  • 57. Probably the Thomas Castel who was a warden of the Saddlers in 1454 (Barron, Index to Corporation Journals 1416–63). He requested burial in the great cemetery of St Paul's (although apparently a parishioner of St Michael le Querne) by his will of 26 March, proved 1 July, 1463 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 351r).
  • 58. John Carmarthen (Kermerdyn) BCnL, rector of St Martin's Ludgate from 1446 but dead by May 1463 (Emden, BRUO to 1500).
  • 59. Presumably the Richard Fordell, master of the Drapers in 1441 (CLRO: Corpora- tion Journal 3, f. 94v) administration of whose will of 12 March 1459 was granted 20 May 1463 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 340v). He requested burial in the porch of St Edmund the King and left various bequests to the parish clerks there.

  • 63. Among deaths for 1475 (177). John Bromer (Brommer), alderman 1465–74, MP London 1459, 1463 (Beaven, II, 13; Thrupp, p 327). A fishmonger, he left a will of 14 March, proved 10 December, 1474 (PROB 11/6, f. 130r) and was buried in the church of St James Garlickhithe (Stow, Survey, ed Kingsford, I, 249). His deceased wives Elizabeth and Agnes and current wife Joan are mentioned in his will but it is not clear whether the Agnes Bromer admitted in 1449 (5) and among deaths below (95) is his second wife.
  • 64. Among deaths for 1483 (247). A Thomas Chatterley, citizen and mercer, of St Alban Wood Street left a will of 17 April, proved 9 May, 1483 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 345v).
  • 65. Robert Dowde, citizen and fuller, requested burial in the church of St Christopher le Stocks by his will of 25 May, proved 20 July, 1464 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 363r). He left 2s to the parish clerks' fraternity of which he was a brother. His wife Alice is mentioned there and is probably the Alice Dowde (Doode) among admis- sions shortly after 1449 (5) and deaths for 1481 (230).
  • 66. A Robert Bradow, citizen and baker, requested burial in St Gabriel Fenchurch Street by his will of 25 March, proved 24 October, 1464 (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 366v).
  • 67. Richard Bird (Berde), citizen and linendraper, parishioner of St Mary Abchurch, requested burial in the above church on the north side by his will of 23 October, proved 30 October, 1464 (PROB 11/5, f. 45r). He left 6s 8d to the parish clerks' fraternity for attendance at his obsequies and annual prayers for his soul.
  • 68. William Stifford, citizen and goldsmith, requested burial on the south side of St Nicholas Acon by his will of 25 September 1464, with codicil of 26 November, proved 18 January 1465, in the Admiralty court (Guildhall MS 9171/5, f. 372r). He left 20s to the parish clerks' fraternity and another 20s to be distributed among its poor and infirm members. The Elizabeth Stifford among admissions for 1454 (36) may be the wife of the William with this name who is mentioned in his will.

  • 71. Another William Wrixham (Wrixam) is entered among the admissions for 1488 (287). One of them may be identical with the individual who was principal of Brasenose Hall, Oxford in 1461, rector of St Benet Sherehog in 1477 and then of St Matthew Friday Street from 1482 and Master of St Katherine by the Tower during 1484–9. The latter died on 11 April 1505 (Emden, BRUO to 1500).
  • 72. Among deaths for 1470 (130). Probably the Robert Spencer who was rector of St Andrew by the Wardrobe 1463–9, when he died (Hennessy, pp 88, lxi). By his will of 15 June, proved 4 July, 1469 he requested burial in the chancel of his church (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 40v).
  • 73. Among deaths for 1475 (177). Roger Malmesbury was Master of St James's Hospital Westminster in 1467 (VCH London, I, 546) until his death in 1474 and requested burial in the chancel of the hospital chapel by his will of 28 September, proved 24 October, 1474 (PROB 11/6, f. 124r).
  • 74. Among deaths for 1481 (228). Richard Reed was rector of St Martin Pomeroy, where he asked to be buried before the altar in the choir by his will of 2 October, proved 11 October, 1480 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 302r).
  • 75. Probably the Robert Kirkham who was Master of the Rolls 1461–71 (Foss, Judges of England), and prebendary of Brownswood in St Paul's 1449–68 (Fasti, p 22). Among many benefices held in plurality he was rector of St Dunstan in the East and of Harrow on the Hill in 1471 when he died (Hennessy, pp 135, 205).
  • 76. A William Bolthorp of York diocese was ordained on the title of Waltham Abbey in London diocese as subdeacon on 11 April, and priest on 6 June, 1444 (Davis, 15532).
  • 77. Among deaths for 1466 (109). Edmund Kirton had served as Abbot of Westminster 1440-c 1463 and died on 3 October 1466 (Pearce, pp 129–30).
  • 78. Among deaths for 1470 (130). Richard Illington (Ellyngton), monk of Westminster Abbey; admitted in the year Michaelmas 1442–3, priest 1443–4, granger 1448–50 and died 1 December 1469 after several years as an invalid (Pearce, p 150).
  • 79. Either this Thomas Worley or another admitted in 1456 (44) may be identical with the gentleman of the Chapel Royal who served there between 1465 (when he was granted a property, 'Le Lambe' in Distaff Lane, London) and 1500, when he died. He left a will of 15 April, proved 11 December, 1500 which gives his residence as Upton, Bucks (PROB 11/12, f. 95v). His wife Katherine survived him, acting as his executrix.   • 80. It is often unclear from the abbreviations in this section whether Latin or English forms of Christian names are intended. Usage is inconsistent and both forms are present. In cases of doubt English forms are followed.
  • 81. Among deaths for 1475 (177). Perhaps the Thomas Brown, citizen and chapmaker, who requested burial next to his late wife Isobel before the altar of St John in St Magnus Martyr by his will of 19 November 1475, proved 30 January 1476 (PROB 11/6, f. 158r) as he left 6s 8d to the parish clerks' fraternity. If so, his death is unusual for being recorded in the clerks' year of account in which it occurred, rather than the following year as normal after 1469 on BR.
  • 82. Probably the William Stalon, citizen and butcher of St Botolph Aldgate, who was a common councilman for Portsoken ward in 1465 (Tucker), although his death is not recorded on BR. In his will of 12 August 1484, proved 11 April 1485, Stalon requested burial in his parish churchyard next to his late wives Joan and Katherine and names his current wife Margaret as executrix (Guildhall MS 9171/7, f. 19v). Katherine Stalon is apparently among deaths for 1467 (114) and Margaret among admissions for the same year (116).
  • 83. Among deaths for 1494 (338). A Thomas Swayne is mentioned as step-father of Master John Hothersall in the latter's will proved 18 February 1493 (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 46v). Hothersall (Ottersale) himself appears among admissions for 1485 (262) and deaths for 1493 (331).
  • 84. Among deaths for 1472 (147). Perhaps the Thomas Page, citizen and pewterer, parishioner of St Botolph Billingsgate, who left a will of 4 July, proved 28 August, 1471 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 99r). His wife Isobel is mentioned there and an Isobel Page is among admissions for 1457 (52).
  • 85. Among deaths for 1477 (194). Presumably the Simon Thurstan, salter, who was a common councilman for Queenhithe ward c1462 (Tucker). A parishioner of St Michael Queenhithe, he requested burial in the cemetery there if he died in London by his will of 31 December 1476, proved 12 January 1477 (PROB 11/6, f. 202r).
  • 86. Among deaths for 1472 (147). Thomas Hoddesdon of St Olave, Southwark, left a will of 7 November, proved 4 December, 1471, which refers to his late wife Alice (PROB 11/6, f. 29r). She is presumably identifiable with the Alice Hoddesdon (Hoddysdon) also admitted in 1465 (101) and among the deaths below (102) for this year on BR.
  • 87. Among deaths for 1472 (147). Probably the John James, citizen and butcher, who requested burial in the church of St Nicholas Shambles before his usual seat by his will of 15 May, proved 8 June, 1471 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 78r). His wife Joan is mentioned there and a Joan James (Jamys) was admitted with John in 1465 (101).
  • 88. Among deaths for 1501 (396). Probably the John Quinson (Quenson), citizen and vintner, who requested burial in St Peter Cheap by his will of 23 March 1500 (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 206r, 9168, f. 150r). His wife Audrey, who survived him, is mentioned in his will and an Audrey Quinson was admitted with John (101) and is among deaths for 1505 (443).
  • 89. Among deaths for 1478 (202). Perhaps the Ambrose Preston, citizen and tallowchandler, who requested burial in the churchyard of St Margaret Fish Street Hill by his nuncupative will of 7 July, proved 18 July, 1477 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 209r).
