[1217–2] Grant by Eustace prior and convent to John (de) Evere, citizen, of all that Stephen de Giseborne held of the grantors; abutments, the land of Peter de St. Paul, chaplain on the west and the land of Henry de Cornhull on the east containing in width along the king's highway, 11½ ells and at the lower end (in inferiore capite) 11 ells and in length it extends from the king's highway on the south to the land of Margaret Sibelling on the north, 21¼ ells; to hold in perpetuity; rent 3s. p.a.; chirograph; witnesses, Walter Hervy, mayor, Richard Parys, John de Wodeleye, sheriffs, Walter Pot(er), alderman.

[1170–c. 1185] Grant by Stephen prior and convent to John son of Serlo of land [f. 69] which Serlo himself held; rent 3s.; to hold in fee as long as he pays the rent duly; gersuma 1s. 4d. for pittances; witnesses. Geoffrey the alderman, Henry de Chesewyke, Fulk the Baker, Alfred the Baker, William de Suthfolch, Ralph de Northfol, Nicholas the Bedell.
347. [List of those paying rent]: John Serle; Simon Ni-(n)ler, the widow of Ni-(n)ler; then the land was divided for Robert Hardel paid 1s. 6d. and James Coteler 1s. 6d.; afterwards John Bacon paid the whole sum and granted the tenement to Peter de Halstede paying 3s. as appears in their charter enrolled 3 Ed. I and Peter de Halstede otherwise called de St. Paul paid; the nuns of Halliwell; Hugh de Waltham, 1 Ed. II; Nicholas Pykott, 5 Ed. II and 1 Ed. III; John Pykott, 5 and 6 Ed. III; John Rokell, 30 Ed. III; Thomas Pykott, 48 Ed. III and 8 Ric. II; Thomas atte Swanne, 18 Ric. II; widow of the same, 8 Hy. IV and these two tenements are situated one after another adjacent on the north side of the great street of Cornhull.
348. Note: that Richard Dokesworth granted two tenements adjacent to Thomas Orpedman paying therefrom to Holy Trinity 6s. p.a. as appears by their charter (fn. 1) of 15 Ed. I.
349. Memorandum: William de Belmonte gave to the prior and convent 15s. p.a. which John Blond, clerk, was accustomed to pay him from certain land as appears by Charter Thirteen (fn. 2) of several parishes.

351. Common plea held in the Husting, Mon. 4 Nov. 1342.
[f. 69v] James de Gourneye complained that on Mon. 1 May 1340 the prior came to the pl.'s free tenement and took naam to the value of 40s. etc. until by gage and pledge of William de Thorneye, one of the sheriffs, a date was given etc.; the prior by his attorney Alan Gilyngham came and said the taking of naam was lawful because Thomas Heroun, his predecessor, was seised by the aforesaid James and John Leflyf as true tenants and because the rent was 45s. in arrears on the day of taking the naam; the pl. said he had nothing in the land except by the right of his wife Joan and he was not able to answer for the said tenement (onerare vel exonerare); at a court held Mon. 15 July 1342 the prior, James and Joan present, the pls., said they did not hold of the prior and placed themselves on their country; jury summoned; at a court held Mon. 21 Oct. 1342 the pls. essoined. The prior was attached to reply to James le Shereman concerning the plea etc.; on Mon. 15 July 1342 the prior came to his free tenement and took naam that was valued at 30s. until by gage and pledge of John de Rokelee, one of the sheriffs, a day was given etc.; the prior by his attorney Alan de Gillyngham came and said that it was lawful as the rent was 37s. 6d. in arrears [incomplete].
350 contd. Afterwards the land was divided for John Leflyf paid 3s. 4d. for his part and James Gourneye, shereman, 11s. 8d. for the other part: 3s. 4d. after John Leflye; Thomas Yrland, 35 Ed. III and 1 Ric. II; [f. 70] the churchwardens of St. Michael Cornhull; 11s. 8d. after James Gourneye; Geoffrey Stuuecle 48 Ed. III and 1 Ric. II which part was divided [See also after 352] as appears by charter (fn. 3) enrolled 18 Oct. 1378.
352. Indenture made between Geoffrey Stu(u)ecle and William Wodehous, citizen and skinner, witnesseth that, since William and Alice his wife have a tenement and two shops with a solar built thereon by the enfeoffment of Geoffrey and since Geoffrey has two shops and since Thomas Ireland, citizen and skinner, has another tenement and one shop, all which lands and tenements are liable to pay 15s. p.a. to Holy Trinity of quit rent of which rent Thomas paid 3s. 4d. p.a. and the rest of the rent of 11s. 8d. p.a. is divided between Geoffrey and William as they wish, Geoffrey and William agree that the tenement, shops and solar of William and Alice shall be charged with 3s. 4d. p.a. and the two shops of Geoffrey shall pay 8s. 4d. p.a.; and if William and Alice, their heirs and assigns are asked for more than 3s. 4d. they may distrain on the property of Geoffrey his heirs and assigns and vice-versa; [f. 70v] sealed; dated 4 Aug. 1378.

355.  Lease by Stephen Bukerell to Thomas le Batur of certain land with houses built thereon containing in width along the street leading towards Cornhull from the corner of Bersker(u)ereslane up to the grantor's land on the east, 10 ells 15 ins. and [f. 71] in length from this corner up to the grantor's land on the south along the lane of Bersker(u)ereslane 17½ ells and in depth from the king's highway up to the half of the private room (usque ad medietatem camere private) on the south 24¾ ells; the grantee to hold all in wood and stone etc.; rent to Holy Trinity 4s. 2d. and to the grantor and his heirs 23s. 10d. p.a.; chirograph sealed; witnesses, Ralph Hardell, mayor, Stephen de Oystergate, Henry de Valen(ern) [sic], sheriffs, Roger son of Roger, alderman, Thomas de Dunolm, Nicholas son of Joce.

356. Common plea held in the Husting, Mon. 23 Feb. 1360.
John Triple, citizen and fishmonger, complained that on Thurs. 29 Jan. 1360 the prior came to his tenement and took naam etc. to the value of 4s. 2d. etc. until by gage and pledge of Simon de Benyngtyon, sheriff, etc.; the prior by his attorney Alan Horwode said naam just etc., the tenement situated in the parish of St. Michael in the corner of Berche(u)erislane next the church between the tenement of John [f. 71v] Bertelot, carpenter, on the south and that of Andrew le Pyebakere on the east and the prior was seised of the tenement and the tenant John de Triple was in arrears to 4s. 2d. for one whole year before the taking of naam and John could not deny this; the prior has the return of the naam which is not subject to replevin and John de Triple in mercy.
