PRAYERS.

The Lord Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas sat Speaker this Day, in the Absence of the Lord Keeper, being not well.

Ashley's Bill.

The Earl of Bridgwater reported, "That the Committee for the Bill to enable Anthony Ashley Esquire to levy Fines, &c. have considered thereof, and have made some Amendments therein, which are offered to their Lordships Consideration."

The said Amendments, being read Twice, were Agreed to; and the Bill ordered to be engrossed, with the said Amendments.

Imposition on Wines Bill.

The House was adjourned into a Committee during Pleasure, to consider of the Bill for granting an Imposition upon all Wines and Vinegar, &c.

The House being resumed;

The Lord Ashley reported, "That the Committee of the whole House have considered of the Bill for granting an Imposition upon all Wines and Vinegar, &c.; and are of Opinion, That the same be passed, without any Amendment or Alteration."

Also he acquainted their Lordships, "That there being some Apprehension this Bill may seem to take away the ancient Freedom from Impost upon Wines allowed to the Peers of this Kingdom; the Committee thinks it fit, that there be a Desire to His Majesty, that the Peers may enjoy such Freedom from Impost as formerly the Peers have had."

Which Motion the House approved of; and appointed the Earl of Bolingbrooke, the Earl of Anglesey, and the Lord Ashley, to withdraw presently, and prepare a Draught to this Purpose.

The said Lords presently withdrew.

Hodie 3a vice lecta est Billa, "An Act for granting unto His Majesty an Imposition upon all Wines and Vinegar, between the 24th Day of June, 1670, and the 24th Day of June, 1678."

The Question being put, "Whether this Bill shall pass?"

It was Resolved in the Affirmative.

Lords Freedom from Impost.

The Earl of Anglesey reported what the Committee have drawn up, to be presented to His Majesty, on Behalf of the Peers, touching their Freedom from Impost; which, being read, was Agreed to as follows:

"The Lords Spiritual and Temporal taking Notice, upon their passing the Act, intituled, "An Act for granting unto His Majesty an Imposition upon all Wines and Vinegar imported, between the 24th of June, 1670, and the 24th of June, 1678," that the Freedom from Impost heretofore allowed to the Peers of the Realm hath been of late reduced to a small Allowance in Money, and may be further impeached by the said Act, do humbly desire to have their ancient Allowance, by a Freedom from all Impost for the respective Quantities accustomably allowed to every Peer before the Year 1660; and that Your Majesty will be graciously pleased to direct Your Officers concerned to make such Allowances for the Time to come, as was observed in the Times of Your Progenitors."

The Lord Steward and the Lord Chamberlain of His Majesty's Household are appointed to wait upon His Majesty, and humbly present unto Him the aforesaid Desires.

ORDERED, That the Committee for the Bill concerning Sir Cutbert Heron do meet To-morrow in the Afternoon; and the Committee for the Bill to enable Robert Hotchkin Esquire to sell Land, for Payment of Debts.

Deeping Fens Bill.

ORDERED, That the Bill concerning the Draining of Deeping Fenns shall be read the Second Time To-morrow Morning.

Bill against Conventicles.

The House was adjourned into a Committee, to proceed in the Debate of the Bill to prevent and suppress seditious Conventicles.

King present at a Debate.

And the Committee being in Debate of a Clause of the said Bill, His Majesty coming unexpectedly into the House, the House was resumed.

Then His Majesty said to the Lords, "That He is come to renew a Custom of His Predecessors, long discontinued, to be present at Debates, but not to interrupt the Freedom thereof; and therefore desired the Lords to sit down, and put on their Hats, and proceed in their Business."

Upon which, the Lords taking their Places and putting on their Hats, the House was again adjourned into a Committee during Pleasure; and the Debate was proceeded in.

The House being resumed;

Bill against Conventicles.

It is Resolved, That the Consideration of the Bill against Conventicles shall be taken into further Debate To-morrow Morning, at Nine of the Clock, the First Business.

Morris versus Dove.

Whereas, upon the humble Petition and Appeal of John Morris and Robert Clayton, from certain Proceedings in the Court of Chancery, in several Causes wherein Sir John Prettyman and the said John Morris and Robert Clayton and Sir Thomas Cullam Baronet were Plaintiffs, and John Dove and Anne his Wife (both since deceased) and Thomas Dove their Executor were Defendants, the said Thomas Dove was appointed to put in an Answer to the said Petition in Writing this Day; it appearing, by the Petition of the said Thomas Dove read this Day, and his Affidavit annexed, "That he could not possibly in so short Time put in his Answer to the said Petition; and therefore prayed longer Time:"

It is thereupon ORDERED, by the Lords Spiritual and Temporal in Parliament assembled, That the said Thomas Dove shall put in his Answer in Writing to the said Petition and Appeal on Monday the 28th Instant, at Ten of the Clock in the Forenoon: And hereof he may not fail.

ORDERED, That this House be adjourned till Five of the Clock this Afternoon, to hear the Cause of Pearle.

ORDERED, That the Bill concerning Falmouth Church shall be read after the Cause of Pearle shall be heard; and after that, the Bill of Naturalization of Captain Gunman; and next after that, the Bill for transporting of Corn, &c. shall be read.

ORDERED, That the Committee for the Bill concerning the Jurisdiction of the Admiralty shall sit on Thursday Morning next, at Eight of the Clock.

Ashley's Bill.

Hodie 3a vice lecta est Billa, "An Act to enable Anthony Ashley Esquire, Son of the Lord Ashley, to acknowledge Fines, and suffer Recoveries, of certain Lands, whilst he is under the Age of Twenty and One Years."

The Question being put, "Whether this Bill shall pass?"

It was Resolved in the Affirmative.

Gunman's &c al. Nat. Bill.

Hodie 2a vice lecta est Billa, "An Act for Naturalization of Captain Christopher Gunman and others."

ORDERED, That the Consideration of this Bill be committed to the same Committee as the Bill for Deeping Fenns is.

Pearle's Bill rejected.

Upon hearing of Counsel and Witnesses this Day at the Bar, upon a Bill, intituled, "An Act for the Relief of Richard Pearle, of The Haywood, in the County of Hereford, Gentleman;" as also upon the Petition of Sir James Bridges Baronet against the said Bill:

After due Consideration had of what was offered on both Parts, it is Resolved, by the Lords Spiritual and Temporal in Parliament assembled, That the said Bill be dismissed.
