Earl of Nottingham's Privilege. Watson proceeded against.

The Petition of John Watson, an Attorney of the King's Bench, and Solicitor for the Earl of Nottingham, was read; wherein the Petitioner complained of Thomas Brett, for proceeding to a Trial at the last Assizes in Sussex, notwithstanding that he made known unto him that his necessary Attendance was required on the said Earl during the Parliament.

And Agreed, That the Petitioner ought to have had an Order from this House, for Stay of the said Trial (prout the Earl of Devon had 23 February 1625).

And so this Petition was Rejected.

Committee for the Safety and Defence of the Kingdom, &c. Provision of Musquets, &c.

The Lord President reported, That the Committee for Defence of the Kingdom, etc. did meet Yesterday in the Afternoon, and caused the Armourers and Gunmakers, etc. to deliver unto them an Estimate what Armours, Musquets, Pikes, etc. they could provide Monthly; and appointed a Sub-committee to set Prices on the same.

The Names of the Sub-committee were read: videlicet, The

E. of Clare.
E. of Totnes.
L. Bp. of Duresm.		 L. Willoughby.
L. Cromwell.
L. Mountague.
L. Vere.

They, or any Five of them, to meet at the Earl of Totnes's House, on Monday next (the Third of April), at Two in the Afternoon, to agree for the Prices of Arms. And the Armourers, and other Artificers for Arms, etc. are then to be there.

Security of the Coal Trade.

The Lord President further reported, That the said Lords Committees, considering how to provide Gunpowder, found that Salt-petre cannot be made, for Want of Sea-coal; whereupon their Lordships thought fit to propound to the House, That a Fleet be set out, to secure the Colliers from Newcastle to London, who now dare not pass, for Fear of the Dunkerkers.

The House took this into their Consideration; as also a Relation made by the Lord Bishop of Duresm, of the Multitude of Ships which are maintained by these Coals, and of the Danger of the Coal-works to be utterly lost, if they cease but for One Month. And the House being put into a Committee, for the freer Debate thereof, it was Agreed (after the House was resumed), That the said Committee for Defence of the Kingdom, etc. shall consider, on Monday next, how the Newcastle Ships may be secured.

Ld. Compton introduced.

This Day Spencer Lord Compton was brought into the House, in his Parliament Robes, between the Lord Mordant and the Lord Cromwell, Garter going before; and his Lordship delivered his Writ, kneeling, to the Lord Keeper; which being read, he was brought to his Place next to the Lord Chandos's Place.

Johnson versus Johnson.

His Complaint rejected.

Gyles Johnson being committed Yesterday unto the Serjeant's Custody (by Order of the House), until he shall pay such Costs and Charges as Sir Charles Cesar and Sir Robert Rich shall assess, unto William Johnson, the Constable of Eaton, and others, brought hither upon his unjust Complaint against them; the said Gyles did this Day petition to be heard, touching contemptuous Speeches of the said Constable, concerning the Privilege of Parliament; which was rejected, for that he did not alledge the same Yesterday. And the former Order was confirmed.

Adjourn.

Starkey's Bill.

The Lords Committees on Ralph Starkies Bill are to meet on Wednesday next, at Two of the Clock in the Afternoon, in the Painted Chamber.

L. Willoughby's Counsel.

Mr. Serjeant Crew hath Leave to be of Counsel with the Lord Willoughby, in his Competition against the Earl of Darby and Elizabeth his Wife, for the Office of Lord Great Chamberlain of England; reserving himself for the King's Claim to the said Office.

Office of Great Chamberlain settled upon the Heir General.

The Counsel for the Earl of Derby and Elizabeth his Wife, and the Counsel for the Lord Willoughby, did this Afternoon argue the several Titles of the said Eliz. and of the said Lord Willoughby, unto the Office of Lord Great Chamberlain of England.

And they being withdrawn; it was Agreed, upon the Question, That the said Office is descended unto the said Lord Willoughby, as Cousin and Heir General unto Henry last Earl of Oxon, deceased.

His Majesty's Claim to the Disposal of it to be heard.

And whereas the King hath required, That His Counsel be heard, for His Claim and Right unto the said Office; it was further Ordered, That Mr. Serjeant Richardson and Mr. Serjeant Crew shall confer with Mr. Attorney thereof (who is now sick); and they to be heard for the same on Tuesday next, at Nine of the Clock in the Morning, which Day is peremptorily appointed for the same.
