Warnell.

220. (C. p. 166).—King Henry III has inspected the charter of John Francigena, parson of Caldebec, granting a moiety of the close of Warnel, etc. [This is an incomplete version of no. 221. John Francigena, King's clerk, was also rector of Grasmere in 1241 (Farrer, Records of Kendale, ii, 1). On Dec. 26th, 1231, Henry III granted to John le Franceys, i.e. Francigena, parson of St. Kentigern's, Caldbeck, 10 acres of the costera of Warnell wood and all the costera of Warnell, from the top of the abbot's hedge enclosing his land of Caldbeck to Wytew[r]a, to the gates (portae) and eastward to the high trees at Aikbank; down to the Caldew and up by the Caldew and Caldbeck to the abbot's buildings; rent, half a mark yearly (Cal. Pat. Rolls, 16 Henry III, p. 456). Date of no. 220, 1232.]

221. (C. p. 167; H. 1; D. art. 43).—King Henry [III] has inspected the charter of John Francigena, parson of Caldebec, as follows:—John Francigena, with consent of W[alter Malclerk], bishop of Carlisle, his ordinary and patron of the above church, and of R[adulph], prior, and the convent of Carlisle, grants to Holm abbey half the close of Warnel, except the part already ploughed within the monks' half, i.e. between the hedge dividing the monks' land and the king's forest, above the sike called Gresgard gile towards the west and the sike called Brochole gile towards the east, as the monks' dyke runs from one sike to the other on the north of the ploughed land, which he holds in his own hand while he gives up the said half. The monks of Holm to hold as freely and securely as John Francigena holds it from the king of England, on payment of 40d. yearly for all services. Witnesses—W[alter], bishop of Carlisle, G[ervase] de Louther, archdeacon, W[illiam], prior of Wetherhale, etc.—The king confirms this charter. Witnesses—J[oceline], bishop of Bath, R[ichard Poore], bishop of Durham, W[illiam], bishop of Exeter, H[enry] bishop of Rochester, H[ubert] de Burgo, earl of Kent. Given by the hand of Radulph, bishop of Chichester, chancellor, at Rading, May 12th, 16 Henry. [The Carlisle MS. has 'W. bishop of Oxford' for 'Exeter.' 1232.]

222. (C. p. 168).—John Francigena, parson of Caldebec, grants [as no. 221. 1232.]

223. (C. p. 168).—Walter, bishop of Carlisle, has inspected the charter of John Francigena [as above] and confirms it. Witnesses—R[adulph], prior of Carlisle, Gervase de Louther, archdeacon [and in H. 2] W[illiam], prior of Wedirhale, Master R[obert] de Oterington, Master J[ohn] de Noketon, etc. [1232.]

224. (C. p. 168).—Radulph, prior, and the convent of Carlisle confirm the [above] charter of John Francigena. Witnesses— Walter, bishop of Carlisle, G[ervase] de Louther, archdeacon, etc. [1232.]
