Index

INDEX NOMINUM. The index requires a word of explanation. The orthodox method of placing Christian names in alphabetical order has been departed from. Many years of search has led the writer to the conclusion that Christian names should be placed in chronological order rather than alphabetical, it is only in this way that any searcher can conveniently extract the names without having to re-write and re-arrange his notes.

In this document they are arranged in the order of their occurrence. It will be observed that the document is heavily charged with Christian names, the inference is that Cumberland folk were considerably behind the rest of the country in the adoption of Surnames. This is what might have been expected considering the turbulent times through which, up to this date, they had passed. A study of the names to any one interested in the subject will show how few, except place names and names pertaining to the occupations of an agricultural population, occur, and many of those probably immigrants. It may be noticed also that even where an individual has adopted a surname his son is not called by the same name.

It is claimed that only by placing the Christian names in the order of their occurrence can any connecting series be arranged, and unless this can be done their insertion in an index is of no value.
