Footnotes

  • 1. Stephen, son of Richard de Abbendon 1299 Mayors 50 (recently come of age), S. de Abyndon(e) 1303 LBC 174 (draper), 1336 Will (a tenant in All Hallows the Great and the Less). A sheriff 1314-15, alderman of Dowg 1312-20, Mayor 1315-16, King's Chamberlain 1316-25, an M.P. 1313, 1328, 1329-30, 1330. His father was a draper and wool-exporter (1272 Pat), and a juror for Dowg in 1275 (RH 421). - Abingdon Brk.
  • 2. Henry Nasard 1308 LBB 209 (draper), 1312-13 Pat (King's merchant), 1320 Cl (draper), H. Nassard 1312 Pat, H. Nazard 1319-20 LBE 115. Dead in 1326-7 (Cl). He was alderman of BroadSt 1318-20, 1321-22. Cf. also p. 88. - Nasard seems to be F nasard 'one who speaks with a nasal twang'. Henry may have been a Frenchman by birth.
  • 3. See 1292 S [Walbr 57].
  • 4. Thomas Cok 1318 LBE 94, 1319-20 ib. 116 (draper), Th. Cock 1320 Cl, Th. Cok of Abyndon 1320, 1326-7 Cl (merchant). - ME cok 'cock' used as a by-name. The additional surname may indicate that he was a former apprentice of Stephen or Simon de Abyndone.
  • 5. Simon de Swaneslond 1310 Pat (free of tallage), S. de Swanlond, draper 1319-20 LBE 116, S. de Swanlund 1330 ib. 244, Sir Simon de Swanlond, chivaler 1349 MxFF 127. Alderman of Cand 1327-34, Mayor 1329-30. - Swanland YE.
  • 6. John de Preston(e) 1310 LBD 247 (corder, Dowg), 1337-8 Cl (roper), 1339 Will (corder, of All Hallows the Great). He mentions Walter and Margery, his parents. A sheriff 1319-20, alderman of Dowg 1321-39, Mayor 1332-3. John de Preston, Gerdelere (1332 S, Dowg] was a different person; his parents were Robert and Mariota (HMC 9th Rep 2 a, 23 b). The statement in LBF 284 that John de Preston Mayor was a girdler is erroneous. - Preston Bk, K, etc.
  • 7. See 1292 S [Dowg 29].
  • 8. John Vyveyn 1307 LBC 205 (witness Dowg), J. Vyvyen, corder 1311 LBD 147, J. Vivian 1321 Will (of All Hallows, Dowg). Margaret, his widow (1348-9 Will), was of All Hallows the Great. As seen from his will, he was specially connected with William son of Vivian de Rokesle [cf. 1292 S, Dowg 20], and he will have derived his surname ultimately from this Vivian. See Var 46. He was elected alderman of Dowg in 1320-1.
  • 9. Henry Darcy de Totehelle, draper, appr. of John Mire, adm. Dowg 1310 LBD 119, H. Darcy 1317-18 Cl (draper), 1332 S [BroadSt, 8 m.], 1344-5 Pat. A sheriff 1327-8, alderman of Walbr 1330-49, Mayor 1337-9. H. Darcy, citizen of London, and Hugh de Totehull his brother had land in the West Riding in 1329 (Cl). This indicates that Henry came from Yorkshire, and the Henry Darcy and Hugh de Tothill who witnessed a grant in Fixby (YW) to Thomas de Tothill in 1324 (YD IV, 54 f.) must be Henry the draper and his brother. Hugh de Tothill was a tenant in Fixby, Rastrick, etc. (YW) in 1343 (YD III, 33). See on him also Book of Seals 98, 170. - Darcy, really de Arcy, from Arcy in Normandy. Totehelle is Toothill in Rastrick.
  • 10. John Brand, merchant of London 1315 Cl (wool-exporter), J. Brond 1316 f. Pat (stockfishmonger), 1320 LBE 127. Apparently a general merchant. - OE Brand or Norman Brand fn from O Dan Brand.
  • 11. Henry de longa Stowe, appr. of Richard de Wilhale, draper, adm. Aldersg 1310 LBD 123, H. de Stowe, draper 1319 LBE 108 (got the lease of Coldherberghe in All Hallows the Great), 1337 Cl (deceased). - Long Stow(e) Ca or Hu.
  • 12. Hermann le Skippere 1318 Cl (a merchant of Germany), H. Skippere 1324 Cor 105 (All Hallows the Great), 1345-6 Cl (merchant), H. le Shippere 1332 S (2 m.), H. (le) Skippere 1336-46 LBF 5 ff. - MLG schipper 'skipper'.
  • 13. Thomas de Spaigne 1318 LBE 85 (witness Dowg), Th. de Spayne 1332 S (16d.), 1339 Plea 118 (repr. Dowg), Th. de Ispania 1349 LBF 196. - Cf. Robert de Spaigne 1292 S [Dowg 31].
  • 14. John de Stistede 1320 LBE 134 (chandler), 1323 Cl. - Stisted Ess.
  • 15. John de Somersham, appr. of Edmund de Chiltren, draper 1309-10 LBD 111 (egress 1314), J. de Someresham 1318 LBE 94, 1332 S [Walbr, 31s. 1½d.], 1340 Will (draper, a tenant in St. Mary Bothaw). - Somersham Sf, Hu.
  • 16. William de Staneforde 1323 Cor 77 (owner of a tavern in Dowg), W. de Stanford 1332 S (8s. 10¾d.), 1338 LBF 23 (repr. Dowg), 1340 Cor 253 (All Hallows the Less). Perhaps a taverner. - Stamford, Stanford (common).

A woolman, doubtless connected with Walter Deri (Dyry, Diry), woolmonger (1273 Pat, 1293 LBC 17, etc.). - Possibly a font-name (OSw Diuri, O Dan Dyri).
  • 20. Henry Scof de (of) Malins (Malynes) 1303 LBC 124, 1303 Cl (draper), H. Scof 1305 Mayors 226 (a tenant on Dowgate Hill), 1306 ib. 250. Margaret Skof was a foreign lodging-house keeper in 1298 (Mayors 7). Henry was of Malines (Brabant). Scof is no doubt a Flemish surname, but of obscure origin.
  • 21. Joce de Spaldyng 1315 Cl, J. de Spaldyngge 1320 LBE 121, J. de Spaldinge 1325 Cor 120. Probably a shearman like Hugh de Spalding [1332 S, Dowg]. He killed in self-defence Thomas de Kyrkeby, draper, in All Hallows the Less in 1325 (Cor). - Spalding Li.

  • 30. Gregory de Fulham 1324 LBE 191 (witness Dowg), 1327 Will (owner of property in Wendegoselane, All Hallows the Great and a shop in BridgeSt). A son of Adam le Blound de Fuleham, who mentions Gregory in his will of 1308. Adam was alderman of Bridge 1291-1307 and a fishmonger. Thomas, brother of Gregory, was likewise a fishmonger, and Gregory may have been one too. - Fulham Mx.
  • 31. Nicholas de Donstaple 1318 LBE 94, N. de Dunstapele senior 1332 S (16d.). N. de Dunstapele minor was assessed at 21s. 7d. in 1332 S, and N. de Dunstaple junior contributed 20s. to the loan of 1336-7 (LBF 7).
