Our lord the king, at his last parliament at York, after the octave of Hilary last [20 January 1320], showed the magnates of his realm, who were assembled there, how he had previously arranged a day with the king of France, to be in France at the following Mid Lent [9 March 1320] to do him homage for the lands which he holds of him overseas, and, because time was getting on and the way was long, he could not remain there to complete all the business concerning the said parliament, if he wished to speed on his way, and with the assent of the magnates he arranged a parliament at Westminster at the following octave of Trinity [1 June 1320] to complete the remaining business from the said York parliament, and to dispatch other business of the realm which is the concern of parliament; and afterwards, because of various obstructions and excuses on the part of the king of France, the said day at Mid Lent [9 March] did not take place, and was adjourned again and again, until the Nativity of St John the Baptist [24 June ], at which time he was at Amiens and did his homage and conducted his other business in full, thanks be to God, so that for these reasons the said parliament could not be held at Westminster at the said octaves of Trinity [1 June]. Because of which our lord the king on his return to England, in his great desire and wish to do all the things which concern a good lord for the benefit of his realm and of his people, arranged to hold his parliament here at Westminster now at the octave of Michaelmas [6 October 1320], for the greatest convenience of his people and at the most suitable time for his people after the season of August, and our lord the king wills and orders you all, prelates, earls and barons, and others who are assembled here at this parliament, to proceed in the business of this parliament as is appropriate.
