Whereas a fire has destroyed the church, bell-tower, cloister, refectory, dormitory, and nearly the whole priory of Eskdale, in the diocese of York, together with the bells, vestments, and church vessels, so that help is needed to rebuild and replace the same, the pope is prayed to relax a year and forty days of enjoined penances to penitents who give alms and visit the church on the five feasts of Our Lord, the five feasts of St. Mary, those of Pentecost, St. Bartholomew, and the dedication of the church. 	(f. 74d.) Thomas Cisill (Cicill) of Houden. For confirmation of the institution by the ordinary to the perpetual vicarage of Eastrington, in the diocese of York, which he has held for three years. Granted. Dated as above.
	(f. 76.) Lewis de Cherleton, M.A. licentiate in theology, canon of Lincoln. For confirmation of the prebend of Nassington, notwithstanding that he has canonries and prebends of Hereford, St. Asaph, and Totenhale, and a portion of Ledbury, the rectory of Meyvot and the chapel of Pole Castle (Welshpool) in the diocese of St. Asaph. 	(f. 81.) The archbishop of Auch. On behalf of his advocate, Richard de Drax, D.C.L. rector of Herlawe in the diocese of London, value 14l. which the pope has willed him to resign, to retain the same, and also canonries and prebends of Chichester and Beverley, and the archdeaconry of Totnes, about which, and the prebend of Beverley, he is litigating. Whereas he rebuilt and endowed an ancient chapel near his manor of Tolthorp in the parish of Casterton, and obtained papal indult for the setting up of a college of a master, priests, clerks, and ministers, he prays for an indulgence of three years and three quadragene to those who visit the same on the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin and during the octave. Whereas the pope dispensed his son, John de Ufforde, so as to hold a benefice when he reached the age of eighteen, and whereas he when seventeen was presented by the lay patron to the church of Hoyingham in the diocese of Norwich, and was instituted by the bishop, there being now eight months wanting to the age determined, he prays for confirmation of the said presentation and institution, notwithstanding that John has a canonry of Lincoln, with expectation of a prebend, and is litigating about a canonry and prebend of Salisbury. 	(f. 87d.) The earl of Warwick. Whereas the pope dispensed his son when in his sixteenth year, or as he really was aged seventeen, to hold a benefice with cure of souls, and a dignity without cure, and whereas in England there are few or no such dignities, he prays for an amplification of the dispensation in favour of his son, William de Bellocampo, now studying at Oxford, that he may hold a dignity with cure of souls, together with the other benefice. 	(f. 97.) William de Sutton, perpetual vicar of the chapels of Thorton and Altherthorp in the parish of Pokelington, in the diocese of York. Whereas he and other vicars minister sacraments to their parishioners and receive their fees and tithes, those only for the burial of the dead and the funeral mass being reserved, and as the distance of one chapel is four, and of the other three miles from the parish church, they pray for leave to bury their dead in their chapels and cemeteries, without prejudice to the rector of the said church. 	(f. 97.) Richard, abbot of Chester. Whereas on the death of William, the monks considering that the exemption of the monastery [from ordinary jurisdiction] would be hurtful, bound themselves by oath to procure its revocation, and then elected Richard de Seynesbury abbot, who set out to obtain confirmation from the apostolic see, but being hindered by prohibition of the temporal power, and the wars between England and France, obtained confirmation and benediction from the court of Canterbury, making oath of obedience to the metropolitan, who thenceforward intervened in the rule and administration of the monastery. Richard afterwards applied to Clement VI. who confirmed the election, rehabilitating Richard, and committing to him the rule of the monastery in spirituals and temporals. But he, seeing that no mention was made of the aforesaid oaths, feels his conscience burdened, and prays the pope to confirm what has been done, and to rehabilitate him touching the same, and touching his non-observance of the said oaths. For provision of the church of Helawe, in the diocese of London, about to be void by promotion of the rector to the archdeaconry of Totnes, notwithstanding that he, who is servant of Master Richard Anglicus, advocate in the Roman court, has a canonry and prebend of a collegiate church. Whereas Gerlac de Clave, servant of Richard de Drax, advocate in the Roman court, exchanged the perpetual vicarage of Gilling, in the diocese of York, for the church of St. Wilfrid, York, with Hugh de Saxton, who exchanged the said vicarage for that of Pontefract with John de Beek, and Gerlac exchanged St. Wilfrid's for Langeton with Richard de Wintringham, Richard Drax prays for confirmation of the said exchanges, inasmuch as Gerlac held his first vicarage for a year and more not being a priest; he is prepared to compound with the apostolic camera for fruits received.
