Third Class (First Section) Clerks 1855-70
This grade was created in 1855 when the number of Clerks in the first section of the third class was fixed in principle at twelve. (fn. 1) There were minor variations in the following years when there were frequently either one or two Clerks serving in an acting capacity. In 1866 the number of Third Class (First Section) Clerks was again fixed at twelve. (fn. 2)
In 1855 the salary scale attached to the grade was £250 rising by annual increments of £10 to £350. (fn. 3) In 1867 the size of the annual increment was increased to £15. (fn. 4)
