CHERINGTON

(5 miles W.S.W. of Cirencester)

An altar (fn. 1) to Silvanus or a hunter god has been found in the parish.

(1) Roman Building (ST 9096), at Hailstone, is not closely located, but presumably was in the area of Hailstone Barn where the ground rises gently N. between 400 ft. and 500 ft. above O.D. Foundations and coins had been noted during ploughing, and Lysons excavated the complete building in 1795 finding some walls 2 ft. high (Arch, XVIII (1817), 117 and Pl. V, 2). There were no indications of heating or of tessellated floors. The structure may have been aisled (Arch J, CXX (1963), 28). Iron slag and coins of the 'lower Empire' were found.
