Nicholas son of Gernagot

First occ. as can. 1161 × 67 (EYC I no. 562). Occ. frequently, last 1191 × 94 (YMF I nos. 23, 36; cf. II no. 62). Usual form of his name 'Nicholaus Gernagoti' often abbreviated `Nicholao Gernag" and misunderstood as the names of two individuals, Nicholas and Gernagot. Prob. mistranscribed as 'Nicholao Granger' in ch. of 1189 × 94 (EYC II no. 842). Prob. also occ. as Nicholas can. (e.g. YMF II no. 61, cf. no. 62). Perhaps the son of Gernagot, can., who became a monk of Whitby 1148 × 53 (above).

Nicholas son of Hugh

Occ. as can. 1238 × 41 (YMF I no. 18) and 22 March 1242 (Reg. Gray pp. 191, 195). Possibly to be identified with one of two men of same name: 1. archdcn. of Wilts. (Salisbury dioc.) by 23 Aug. 1247, last occ. 11 March 1257, had been succeeded by 27 Dec. 1258 (1 Fasti IV 36-7; cf. Cart. Treas. York p. 1); 2. official of bp. of Salisbury and preb. of Salisbury, who occ. from 9 June 1249 to 2 March 1252/3 (1 Fasti IV 69-70). A fourth man of the same name occ. as clerk 7 Apr. 1265 and was conducting business in connection with will of John Maunsel deceased treas. of York 20 Aug. 1266 (CPR 1258-66 pp. 417, 629).
