Indenture of accord, witnessing that whereas the said tenants hold severally of the lord by suit of his court of Schorne every three weeks, and by the service of choosing yearly two tenants at the first court after Michaelmas to perform the office of reeve, of whom the lord or his steward shall choose one, and two likewise to perform the office of bedel, of whom the lord or his steward shall choose one, and by other services, the bedel receiving as usual for his pains, whereas the tenants of the 'Southborgh' especially, possessing among them 516½ acres 6⅓ 'daywerc' of land, and thereto claiming and having common of pasture for 310 sheep, namely for every work of 'schefwarke' and 'hardwarke' pasture for two sheep upon the lord's soil in 'Schornewode' to their said freehold pertaining, for which also they shall in autumn reap wheat, rye or oats upon 77½ acres of land of the lord's demesne within the manor at the disposition of the lord or his bailiff, namely three works for every 10 acres of their own land, whereof two are called 'schefwerke' and one 'hardwarke,' and shall take for every two works of 'schefwerke' two sheaves of corn, and if they do them not shall pay 8d., and for every 'hardwarke' 6d., likewise for every 10 acres they shall thresh one quarter of wheat or pay 4d., shall carry (averabunt) one quarter of corn from the manor barn to the ship in 'Schorneflete' or pay 1d. at the choice of the lord, shall hoe for half a day in the lord's corn or pay 1d. at the choice of the lord, and ¾d. for 'medeselvir,' and ¼d. for 'stubbulwerke,' and shall make enclosure about the manor court of 25½ perches 5 feet of wall, and whereas also all tenants in residence and other residents within the precinct of the 'Southborgh' and the 'Northborgh' shall come twice a year to two views of frankpledge to be holden in the manor, once after Michaelmas and again after Easter, whereat they shall make all such presentments as to that view pertain, and at every view, it is said, shall present 20s. for the common fine, and whereas the said works and fine seemed to the tenants exceeding burdensome, for the sake of peace between the parties by unanimous assent the lord has granted to the tenants, their heirs and successors, that henceforward they shall be quit of the customs of choosing two of their number for the office of reeve, of all custom of reeveship, reaping of corn whatsoever of his and theirs, threshing, averaging, hoeing, mowing, 'medeselvir,' collecting of straw and making enclosure about the manor, and of presenting the common fine of 40s. at the views of frankpledge, upon this condition, that the tenants have made a joint grant and release to the lord, his heirs and assigns, of all their estate and right of common of pasture in 'Shornewode,' that for omission of the works and customs aforesaid the tenants of the 'Southborgh,' their heirs and successors shall pay yearly 73s. 1d. at St. Peter's Chains for all their lands aforesaid, to be levied by the lord's ministers, namely every tenant of 10 acres shall pay 17d., and every tenant of part of 10 acres in proportion, with power to the lord to distrain for arrears, saving to the lord all other services of all his tenants, as in fealties, reliefs, escheats, suits of court, rents etc. not above discharged, and saving always that if any tenant being within age or in power of another, or any tenant in fee tail may not give consent hereto, the benefit of the services due of old time is reserved as fully as before the date of these presents.
