	James has proved his love for the Church by sending Andrew bp. of Murray to promote peace between the Pope and France. The bp. can bear witness it has not been the Pope's fault if he has failed. Lewis does not wish peace, but to oppress and lacerate the Holy See. He occupies Bologna and excites schism, so that the Pope has been obliged to appeal for protection to Ferdinand of Aragon and the Seignory of Venice, with whom he has made a Holy League for the recovery of Bologna. Hopes James will either enter this league or at least abstain from giving aid to France. Rome, 6 (fn. 1) Jan. 1512, 9 pont.

	[Note of letters received 16 Jan. 1511–12.]
	From Rome, 7 to 11 Jan.—The Emperor will leave Vicenza if Venice will give more money, and for money will give Verona at once. The King of England has sent commission to the Spanish ambassador and Cardinal of York to sign the League as the Spanish ambassador shall see fit. The Pope left on the 11th for La Magnana and Hostia, to return on the 17th. The ambassador of Scotland came from France to inform the Pope that the King of France would resign the protection of Bologna and Ferrara to the Pope if the latter would leave the League of Spain and Venice. The Pope answered that he did not wish the said towns by his mediation, much less to leave the League. The Swiss cardinal gone to be legate in campo in Lombardy. The Spaniards expect soon to get Bologna.

	Complaint to the King by the merchants of the Staple of Calais against the Merchant Adventurers, who, disregarding the letters missive of Henry VII., continue to vex the Staplers (instances given, the last being that of John Brompton whose goods were arrested at Antwerp at Midsummer 1510). Beg the King to direct a privy seal to the governor and fellowship of the Merchant Adventurers to release the pledges they have exacted and desist from vexation.

Further statement of "The offences contempts and injuries committed and done" by the Merchants Adventurers contrary to a decree by the King's Council and the King's letters, directed both to the mayor of the said Staple and governor of the said Merchants, for a surceance of vexations till the matter should be examined. Contrary to the said decree the said governor, in Bourse time, at Barough, committed divers merchants of the Staple to prison among felons and murderers infected with pox and other diseases refusing them bail until the lord Dorset at their suit took them "out of the said prison into his owne use" (house). Afterwards, when the King's letters were received, the Governor still suffered the said merchants to remain in Dorset's keeping as prisoners, and, in contempt of the King's letters, departed out of the Archduke's countries; and the prisoners were not released until now of late the Staplers obtained another letter to the Governor, and in his absence his deputy, for that purpose.
