	On this day, the 27 June, restored to their rank as cardinals Bernard Carvajal and Frederic de Sancto Severino, on acknowledgment of their errors. Is glad to have restored to the bosom of the Church two such principal members. They had subscribed and read a schedule in the Lateran Council in testimony of their adherence, and a few days after, in the Consistory at Rome, confessed their errors and asked pardon. Sends a copy of their absolution and restitution. Rome, 27 June 1513, 1 pont.

	Note that, 27 June 1513, the Pope wrote similar letters to the King of Scots, Margaret of Austria and the Kings of Portugal and England concerning the absolving of the two cardinals [Carvajal and S. Severino]; and that on 6 July a duplicate was sent to the King of England without clause "Quorum amborum," &c.

27 June. Vitell. B. II., 47. B.M.	2032. [4287.] HADRIAN CARDINAL ST. CHRISOGON to HENRY VIII.
	Had already written of the preparations of the French for war; of their defeat by the Swiss; of the Spaniards in Lombardy; of the attempts of the Venetians against the city ...; of the siege of Verona; and the efforts of the Pope to restore order. In this last session of the Lateran Council, a note was read from the two (fn. 1) cardinals (patres) at Florence, professing their adherence to the Council. They started a few days after from Florence; entered Rome without the insignia of the Cardinalate; passed the night in the same chamber, and were next day brought to the Consistory, without rochet and hat. Like private persons they approached the Pope through a great crowd, with three genuflexions, confessed their error, asked for pardon, and, abjuring the schism, were absolved by the Pope, who restored to them the red hat, rochet, cape, and pileus, admitting them to kiss his feet. 	Annoyed to hear that he prepares war against Henry king of England, notwithstanding the Pope's intercession, already by two letters declared, and the treaties. He may imagine what grief this causes to the Pope, striving as he is for peace among Christian princes,—in order that a holy war may be prepared against the Turk, who now, having conquered all adversaries, is said to be intent on the destruction of Christendom. The King of England has often promised to join with the Holy See in exhorting other Kings to peace, and if he asks for ecclesiastical censures to be executed against James and his people how can the Pope refuse? 	He is to return, leaving John Style at the King of Aragon's court. Sends 100l. for his charges. Shrewsbury and Herbert with the van and rear wards, 30,000 men, have now besieged Tyrwyn, and most of the King's ward, of 15,000, are passed over to Calais. Tarries only for wind to cross thither. Knight shall show this to the King of Aragon and, at departing, press him to declare his determination according to the treaty. Dover, 29 June.
29 June. Galba B. III., 115. B.M.	2038. [4296.] SPINELLY to [HENRY VIII.].
	Wrote last on the 25th. Has received a packet from Germany, and a letter from Sir Robt. Wingfield, with sundry news of Italy. If the Swiss enter Dauphiny the French King will not be able to withdraw his troops. The Emperor will pay 48,000 gold florins to the Swiss and furnish them with horsemen and ordnance, under Lord Vergy. My Lady hears from Jakys de Banisiis that 600 spears of the Pope and Florentines have entered Plesaunce. The Pope had sent 22,000 ducats to the Viceroy of Naples. The French King has promised the Pope's brother his kinswoman in marriage, with a rent of 30,000 ducats in the Duchy of Milan, to procure the Pope's amity; and will make the Pope's brother governor of that Duchy, abolish the Council and renounce the prematica. Sends a note of the communications between Madame and the ambassador of Aragon, who asked her to write to Henry and gave her the enclosed bill. She delivered it to Spinelly, saying, "that the King of Aragon is a great wise Prince, and ... that in his subtle understanding is comprised many profound matters which cannot be capace unto every ... but that his intent and mind is good." Spinelly answered, he thought so, but that the King of England ought to be made privy to it, when the King of Aragon practised with his enemies. My Lady's letter for the King is sent to Armostorf and Symon de Ferret, with two from Milan from Andrew de Bourg[o]. Sends a copy of one, and an abstract of the other, in English. She still urges the accommodation with the Venetians; and desires the King would retain 1,000 foot and 200 horse of the Duke of Brunswick, now at liberty. Nothing has been said of the carrack (fn. 2), as Tousaynt Dor is not arrived. No resolution come from Geldres. The Lord of Nassaw is at Bumbill. The Lord Reux speaks highly of the King's army. Pyenys and Delapalys have sent to Eden promising to deal lovingly with my Lord Prince's subjects. The Emperor is expected shortly. Brussels, 29 June 1513. Signed.
	ii. "News [sent] by my Lady of Savoy un[to Thomas] Spinelly which she hath understonde of the [ambassador] of Aragon."
	A courier has come, by France, from the King his master. The courier carried letters dated Vagladolyt, 12th of [June], to the Aragonese envoy at the French court, who thereupon returned home. The French stated that my Lady would not allow the King of England to have any aid out of her country; at which Ferdinand is surprised, and exhorts her to assist England. Begs her to solicit peace between the Emperor and the Venetians and urge the King of England, for whom he has great affection, to use his counsel. Much disliked the prosperity of the French in Italy, especially the commotion of Genoa, expecting they would send the second son of King Frederick into the realm of Naples. Is ready to attack Berne, whenever the King's army sets forth. Assents to the alliance between the Princess Mary and the Prince of Castile, and whatever will advance the amity of England.

	The Tyrolese pay 5,000 foot soldiers and 40,000 florins d'or, and have started against the Venetians. Begs he will advertise the Sieur de Berghes of the same. Frankfort, 30 June '13.

	Begs him to hand this letter (ceste lettre) to De Berghes. Thinks De Taxis has heard the news from his brother. The Emperor is come to Frankfort to speak with the elector of Hesse. Thinks that the "journée imperiale" will be successful. Begs he will tell Spinelly that had the money been delivered the Swiss might have been in France ten days ago. The Emperor is informed that the Viceroy "veult faire à la part aux porterons (poltrons ?) de Venesse; sil le fait il sera (?) destrus bien brief." Frankfort, 30 June a^o 13.

	From the Ambassador at Rome, 30 June.—Pope's desire to make peace between the Emperor and Venice. Cardinal San Severino, who stays in the Pope's palace and is all French, has letters of 20 and 21 June, from the Court at Paris, to the effect that the English were crossing and the French would not meet them in the field but furnish Boulogne with 14,000 foot. A Spanish ambassador had come to France to treat the peace and Mons. de la Trimolie was expected.

	Received his letters by bearer, acknowledging hers sent by the Sieur de Jenly and asking, in view of reports of aid given to the English, what attitude these countries will maintain. Saw also his letters to her nephew (fn. 4) and to the town of Ghent and other towns. Although individuals have gone to the service of England, and have sold or hired ships, they are at liberty to do the like with France, for she is resolved to observe the treaties, as she informed him by Philip Dale and the Sieur de Jenly; and her officers of Hainault lately executed some men who had damaged Louis's subjects of Tournesis. Will shortly send a secretary to represent that subjects of these counties have not lately been well treated in France. The towns and countries of her nephew, to which Louis has written, will doubtless behave like good subjects of their natural prince. Brussels, ... June 1513.

	Many days have passed since receipt of his letters witnessing his magnanimity towards the Holy See and Holy League, to which Leo has deferred answering because, with the impending fears of Italy and his own distractions, he dreaded to precipitate an occasion of answering. Now that events have followed of which Henry will have been certified, and the position of Italy seems safer, it is opportune to signify to Henry (who, as he writes, proceeds in the defence of the dignity and liberty of Holy Church, and has surpassed all others of his age) the writer's intention to prove if, by any means, a common peace can be made; and to send shortly two legates, the one to Maximilian and Henry and the other to the French King, for that purpose. Is the more desirous of this because the Turk, having conquered all who took up arms against him, is threatening Christendom. Of this he will learn more fully by the letters of the Cardinal of St. Praxedes and Silvester bp. of Worcester, his ambassador, with whom the Pope has freely conferred. Rome, anno primo.
