| [Wrote last] on the 18th. Two messengers have come from the King of Aragon to his am[bassador here,] through France. One of them, who [left ? on] the 6th inst. found his fellow at Amiens, where he had been detained 16 days, and both together came to this Court; and the said ambassador was occupied in translating his letters until yesterday afternoon, when he had audience. Spinelly subsequently visited her to learn the news. She told him that the King of Aragon doubted of any accommodation between the Emperor and the Venetians; the former was obstinate, the latter would bring in the Turks, the Pope was treating suspiciously with the Swiss, and therefore he had made overture of peace. France is to give his second daughter to Don Ferdinand, and resign to her all the right he claims in Milan, and also induce the Duke of Gueldres to take a recompence for that Duchy elsewhere. My Lady will oppose his intentions as unreasonable and contrary to the treaty made with England, and, if he persist, will break with him. The ambassador told her that, at the departure of Quintana, his master was not aware the business was in so good a train between the Emperor and the Venetians. If the Emperor and England continue united, she thinks that Aragon will not dare to abandon them. The pratices of the Pope are to be attributed to the unreasonable desire of the King of Aragon touching the duchy of Milan. She wishes the King to speak with the Aragonese ambassador in England. She says that the Lord of Nassau has sent Molembeys to England to know the King's mind in the war against France. Brussels, 21 Feb. Signed. | |

2669. SIR W. TREVANYON to the EARL OF SURREY. |
| Has received his letter of the 15 Feb. stating that the King had declined to employ the writer in "this journey upon the land." Is content, therefore, according to his grace's letter, to serve at sea with 200 men. Wrote a month ago to my lord of Lincoln, then Mr. Almoner, for their conduct money and jackets to be delivered to his servant Roger Toker, and subscribed the letter with his own hand according to the King's command. Whenever he receives the money, will do his best to come to Portsmouth by the 8th April, or soon after. Has rigged out a balinger of his own at his own cost, to carry the harness. Hopes it will be hired by the King. Will appoint her well with 40 persons in her. The poor men at Fowy, John Power and others, desire that their ships, the George and the Peter, may be taken into the King's service. It were a good deed for Surrey to help the town of Fowy, as he has Dartmouth. As to the George there are few better ships in England of her burden; Surrey knows the Peter. Will follow his instructions about the Spanish ship at Fowy and the Breton. Desires that he may have two or three petty captains, as he has for two or three years been over-burdened with the wages of his company. Fowy, 24 Feb. | |

2670. MARGARET OF SAVOY to MAXIMILIAN. |
| Must give her opinion without waiting longer for what he is to send her by Loys Gilabert; and, shortly, when she goes to Malines, she hopes to assemble those whom he wishes her to speak with in this matter. Two couriers have come from Spain to the ambassador here, apparently with the same charge as Quintana had to the Emperor, viz., that the King of France offers the King Catholic the marriage of Madame Renée and the Infant Don Fernando, with Naples, the castle of Genoa and the Duchy of Milan, and (as surety) the deliverance of the lady into the King Catholic's hands. The ambassador made no mention of what concerns the Emperor, or Charles, or these countries, or the King of England; and he seemed to solicit that she should promote this matter with the Emperor, who he said, had already made a good answer therein to Quintana. Thinks that the King Catholic speaks very well for himself, whose interest is to have peace and keep what he has won, but that the Emperor and Low Countries would remain au blanc et a la fortune; for if the King of England sees that you abandon him he will make his profit of it at our expense, which he will never do unless you break your promise to him. Pour Dieu, do not let yourself be deceived, remembering that last year you consented lightly to the King Catholic's making truce to your detriment as you often complained to me. Between the King Catholic and France are great mountains, between France and England is the sea; but between these countries and France is nothing and you know the inveterate hatred the French bear to this House. These fine offers of France may be only made with a view to escape the storm which would fall on France if everyone were to do his duty like the King of England, who makes incredible preparations to continue the war; and it is to be feared that if things cool the whole discharge will fall on this country where our people are disinclined to war and ill provided for it. The King of Aragon has what he asks, and he is old; but for Monsieur and his countries this may be no such great advantage. The Emperor knows her desire for the welfare and honour of the King Catholic, seeing how she has always striven to put them together as the two fathers of one son; but no prince in the world can persuade her to counsel the Emperor otherwise than to his honour and advantage, and therefore if he gave Quintana a better despatch than his letters to her indicate, she knows not what to say except that she cannot believe it. If it be so, however, he must see to his honour and profit and have regard to his friendship and treaties with that young King (England) from whom he may be assured of aid at need both with person and money; for in him (England) is no hypocrisy. Knows there are many who desire nothing so much as to break this amity with England, and to that end can only contrive feigned speeches, touching her honour, to raise irritation between the Emperor, the King of England and her; but she assures him that they are all lies and she would die a thousand times rather than even think such things. | |

| Enrolment of inquisitions taken before Roger Hamerton, Clerk of the Market of the Household and searcher of victuals, measures and weights of the whole realm of England, showing what fines have been imposed. | |
| On 17 May [4 Hen. VIII.] Hamerton informed the Court (of Marshalsea) that 19 persons (named) declined to appear before him and the bailiff of the liberty of Westminster on 3 March 3 Hen. VIII., and so they are fined 13s. 4d. each; also that Th. Webe, late mayor, and John Skytte and John Glasier, late bailiffs, of Winchester, have not made due return to his order made by proclamation 14 March 3 Hen. VIII., thus forfeiting to the King 10l., and moreover have not complied with the Stat. of 8 Hen. VII. for a common measure, &c., thus foreiting 100l., and that two drapers (named) of Winchester are fined 3s. 4d. each for having short measures. | |

(before the deputy). At Alysbury, 17 Sept. 4 Hen. VIII. where fourteen persons are fined for declining to attend, and the sub-bailiff and constables forfeit 10l. At Bishop's Lynn, 6 Dec. 5 Hen. VIII., where nine persons declined to attend and fifteen jurors are fined each 13s. 4d. for declining to certify their verdict. At Marsyngham Magna, 8 Dec. 5 Hen. VIII., where several persons used great measures called "tubbys" in which they took of grain and malt five bushels for the half quarter. At Estderham, 12 Dec. 5 Hen. VIII., where James Stanley, bp. of Ely, being lord of the town, forfeits 100l. for non-compliance with the Statutes, and certain butchers were fined for taking fat and kidneys from the quarters of mutton. | Wrote last on the 21st from Brussels. Incloses a copy of it in case of any accident to the original. Hears this morning, from Rome, of the treaty concluded between the Emperor and the Venetians. The estates of Brabant have revoked their grant of 100,000 crowns to the Emperor till the Prince shall be put in possession of his lands. 2673. [3744.] SIR RICHARD WINGFIELD to WOLSEY. |
| Has with great difficulty "caused the King's com[mission] brought over by Foular to be left in the hands of [the] lieutenant of the Staple, where it shall remain unto [such] time as ye shall ordain either Master Treasurer of this [town,] at his return, or to such other as shall stand with the Ki[ng's] pleasure," as the said lieutenant will have nothing to do with payments. The crews must be paid within 10 or 12 days, or it will cause a murmur. On Saturday last some of the petty captains entered the Picardy pale, were attacked by 1,400 or 1,500 men, who slew four or five, and, having sent to Master Vaux and Sir Ric. Whettyll for succour, were rescued by the latter with a body of 300 men, who slew eight score and took 50 prisoners, including a captain named Nic. Martynere. Recommends that the King should write Whettill a letter of thanks. Encloses a remembrance of the new fortifications at Boulogne. Has just been told by Sir Edward Belknap that Fowler keeps the money here till he have sufficient warrant to deliver it. On Saturday last saw one of the six double curtaws, lately come from Malyns, shot twice; never was a b[etter] piece. Calais, XX[V] Feb. Signed. | |

| Fears the King of Aragon desires to evade fulfilment of the treaty last made at Lisle, by which he is bound to make actual war against France this summer, on condition of Henry's subsidising 6,000 men; for John Stile writes that he wishes Henry to send him 6,000 Germans before the 1st June, which is no part of the treaty and is impossible within so short a space. It would seem by the answer made to Spinelly by the Archduchess upon the overtures of Ferdinand's ambassador, at the coming of two Spanish messengers through France (of which [Spinelly] has done well to give notice), that Ferdinand tries every means to make peace with France this year, as he did the last. Quintana, his secretary, has passed through France to the Emperor, and returned the same way; but the Emperor has not informed Henry of his charge, nor said anything of it to Wingfield, who has made frequent inquiries about it. Has heard of these secret practices by three ways. Is to urge the Archduchess to keep the Emperor in mind, by letter, of his obligations; and also to write to the King of Aragon to keep the treaty, declaring in her letters that, at the conclusion of the treaty, she undertook to answer for the King of Aragon, and that it was openly declared that England should not be obliged to provide Germans or other soldiers, but only to furnish the money. Is to request delivery of the King's six courtaulx, which are in the Prince's countries, that Sir Sampson Norton and Sir Edward Belknap, who are at Calais, may provide for their conveyance thither. | "News brought out of France by Yselstain poursuivant, which was sent unto the French King by those of Flanders, for the recoveraunce of their ships and goods taken by the Frenchmen." | |
| Left Bloys, 21 Jan. The Frenchmen are resolved to keep the said goods as confiscate, "because of the vidimus which the greffier of Bruges made upon the King's letters patents, wherein he called his grace King of France and of England." That he left the French King sick in bed with the gout. Saw, at Blois, Pregeunt and other sea captains, who had come thither for money, to go with the Duke of Albany into Scotland. That the Duke was there, and it was reported he should shortly set out for Scotland with a band of Almains. The French are in great fear of the Spaniards. The commons are so depressed by exactions by their own men of war that they are grown desperate, and not only desire to be in subjection to England, but rather in the Turk's, than be so treated. The Lord of Angoulesme is gone into Guienne. At Hunflette, on the 26th, he saw three galleys and ten ... ships making ready to accompany the Duke of Albany. The French Queen's death "is underly (wonderfully) lamented." On his return was taken at Abbeville and St. Quentin, and searched for letters. There are few men of war in those towns. | |
