Preface

The present volume, including the remainder of the Lateran Registers of Eugenius IV, viz. Regg. CCCLIX to CCCCXXXI, embraces the period from the eighth year of his pontificate to its closing year, the sixteenth, i.e. 1437–1447. It is thus the sequel to and completes Vol. VIII of this Calendar, which contained the Lateran Registers of the first seven years of Pope Eugenius. One Register, however, viz. Reg. CCCLXIV (pp. 38–45 of the present volume), contains letters both earlier and later than the eighth year, viz. from the first to the eleventh year. It consequently extends backwards the posterior limit of this volume to the year 1431, so that the volume actually embraces the period 1431–1447.

The Editor again desires to acknowledge many useful suggestions upon points of Irish topography and history from Dr. W. H. Grattan Flood, M.R.I.A., who has kindly read the increasingly numerous Irish entries as the sheets passed through the press.

July, 1912.
