Grant, as follows, for the province of Rouen, at the petition of Henry, king of England, set forth by his orator John, bishop of Coutances:— (i) As to collations of benefices by way of expectation. Immediately after his accession the pope resolved to observe the ordinance made in the Council of Constance, namely that six months shall belong to [papal] expectants and six months to the ordinaries, with the addition that one of the months of the expectants and a month of the ordinaries shall be reserved to universities, lest students, whose increase the pope very greatly desires, be deprived of the hope of the reward of their studies and abandon them. The months of January, March. July, September and November shall belong to expectants, the other months [April, May, June, October and December] to the ordinaries, those of February (fn. 2) and August being left to the universities. (ii) As to the mode of making provision. The students in the university of Caen shall draw up their roll and send it to the pope, who will give them letters according to the order given by them, so that the way to litigation shall be closed, and with the nullifying decree (fn. 3), so that none other but they shall be admitted to benefices which become void in the said two months, in virtue of any other provision. The pope will also take care that they shall not be burdened with costs (fn. 4) (iii) As to reservations of benefices At the beginning of his pontificate the pope decreed the reservations hitherto made by his predecessors, undertaking to use such moderation (fn. 5) in future that there shall be no ground for complaint, etc. (e.g. about annates etc.) Ad fut.rei mem.
