To Francis bishop of Terni (Interamnen.), the pope's nuncio and orator [and] collector of the apostolic see of the tenths of all ecclesiastics in the realms of England, Scotland and Ireland. Appointing him receiver, collector and exactor in the said realms of the tenth for one year of all ecclesiastical benefices imposed by the pope at Mantua with consent of the cardinals etc. for the preparation of a fleet against the Turks, as is contained more fully in the pope's letters on the subject; with mandate to betake himself in person to the said realms, and exact, levy and collect the said tenths from all benefices whatsoever, and also with faculty to do so, give acquittances, compel the disobedient by ecclesiastical censure and deprivation, appoint preachers in order to exhort the people to contribute to this sacred work, etc. Cum pro apparatu. Appointing him, in addition to his recent appointment as collector of the tenth, as is contained more fully in other letters of the pope [see the preceding], collector, exactor and receiver of all moneys, goods and oblations howsoever arising for this sacred [work], with the necessary faculties, including faculty to appoint preachers in order to induce the faithful to contribute, such preachers to be entirely obedient to him. Faculty, as below. The pope lately at Mantua proclaimed a three years’ war against the Turks, and imposed a tenth of all ecclesiastical benefices for three years, as is more fully contained in certain letters of his drawn up on the subject and published in the session at Mantua. Seeing that on account of certain impediments the said letters have not yet been published [in the said parts] nor brought to the knowledge of the persons of those parts, (fn. 2) and considering also the wars and other calamities with which in times past the said parts of England, Scotland and Ireland have been disturbed and are at present afflicted, the pope grants faculty, if the nuncio do not see the possibility of doing otherwise, to impose in the said parts the said triennial imposition of tenths for one year, and reduce the three years to one, fix the term of payment of such year as the whole month of September next to come, prorogue the said three years if he think expedient, and do whatever else in the matter he knows to be expedient; the pope hereby decreeing that the censures and pains promulgated in the letters of the [said] tenths and in other letters of the pope shall not be binding except for the said one year and for the term of September or other, as it shall seem good to him to change, just as if the publication made at Mantua etc. had not been made as far as regards England, Scotland and Ireland. To the bishops of Glasgow and Whiteherne and the archdeacon of Glasgow. Mandate, as below. The recent petition of James and Mary, king and queen of Scots, contained that the minister and friars of the Trinitarian house of Fale in the diocese of Glasgow, instead of the redemption of captives and hospitality engage in uncleanness etc., so publicly and notoriously that there is a great rumour among all the inhabitants of the realm; that on account of exemption from the ordinaries and the dangers of sea and land and the negligence of their superiors, their enormities and shameful life are not corrected, and that they are so much involved in evil that they cannot be brought back to decency and the observance of their rule; and that the said queen has built and erected a certain great hospital, with church, houses, etc., and a number of dignities etc. therein, and has endowed the same. At the said petition, the pope hereby orders the above three, if they find the statements made therein to be true, to remove the said minister and friars, place them in other houses of the same order in the realm, suppress the said order in the said house, and unite and appropriate the said house, value with its annexes not exceeding 70l. sterling, to the said church and hospital in perpetuity, so that the rectors thereof may take possession of the said house etc., without requiring the licence [of the ordinary or] of any other, etc. Ad ea ex apostolice servitutis. Mandate, at the petition of Nemias and Richard de Ibernia, of the order of friars minors of the Observance (containing that although there are in the province of Ireland many places of the said order, there is only one in which the due observance is kept according to the rite of the order of the Observants, but (fn. 5) that all the said places are ruled by conventual or non-observant friars) if the facts be as stated, to grant to the said two friars licence and faculty to reform four places of the said friars conventual, and to reduce them, with consent of the friars dwelling therein, to the Observance, keep therein the regular observance according to the order, rule and rite of the Observants, and live and remain under the obedience of the ultramontane vicar-general of the Observance, etc. Sedis apostolice. To Peter and John de Medicis and their fellows (sociis), merchants of Florence, following the Roman court. Acknowledgment of a loan by them in ready money of 2,000 florins of gold of the Camera to the pope and the Camera and of the price of a tapistry worked in gold and silver (fn. 6) sold by them to the pope for 1,250 florins; with assignment to them hereby, for the more speedy payment, of all moneys from annates due to the Camera on account of any voidances of cathedral or metropolitan churches and monasteries, the expedition of which or the payment of such annates shall be committed to them by the society of the above Peter de Medicis and Gerocius de Piglis and the society of the heirs of James de Salviatis and their fellows dwelling in the city of London, and by the same society of the said Peter and Gerocius and that of Peter de Rabacta and their fellows of Bruges, (fn. 7) so that whenever any sums become due to the Camera through such voidances, they may retain them until the said sum has been wholly paid, putting them down to the account of the pope and the said Camera. Reservation and assignment to him (who has this day resigned to the pope the secular priories of Grèzes (de Gradanis) and [de] Decanatis without cure in the diocese of Carcassonne, provision whereof the pope has ordered to be made to John Guasqueti, a member of the papal household; who is a valetudinarian, and whom the pope knows to have undergone great labours and perils for the defence of ecclesiastical liberty and the papal jurisdiction) of a yearly pension for life of 30 old écus of gold of France, of which 64 are worth a mark of gold, on the fruits etc. of the said priories, to be paid by the said John, who has consented, and by his successors, in the city of Avignon in the chapter-house (in loco capitulari) of the convent of the Celestines or in the Roman court, if he happen to be there dwelling, on All Saints'; with mandate executory hereby to Peter bishop of Albano and the bishop of Orange (Auraycen.) and Sisteron. To the abbot of St. Mary's, Kilbeggan (de Flumine dei) and the prior of St. John's of Jerusalem, Kyllkeneayd, in the diocese of Meath. Mandate (the pope having been informed by William Offergayll, clerk, of the diocese of Ardagh, that John Omochan, rector of the lands de Termto or of the parish church of Cluoncorpi, in the diocese of Elphin, (fn. 12) an open and notorious fornicator, has dilapidated etc. the goods of the rectory and committed simony) if and after William, who is illegitimate, being the son of unmarried parents related in the fourth and fourth degrees of kindred and the double third and fourth degrees of affinity, accuses John before the above abbot and prior, to summon John, and if they find the aforesaid, or anything thereof sufficient for the purpose to be true, to deprive him, and in that event to collate and assign the said rectory, value not exceeding 8 marks sterling, to William; whether it become void by such deprivation, or be void by the death of John Macgilli, or in any other way.
