To Alexander Inglis, a canon of Dunkeld, bachelor in decrees. Dispensation to him, who is of noble birth and is present in the Roman court, holds a canonry and prebend of Dunkeld, and is litigating in the apostolic palace about the parish church of Lundeff in the diocese of Dunkeld, of which he is in possession, value not exceeding 4l. and 20l. sterling respectively, to receive and retain together with the said church, if he win it, any one other benefice, or without such church or if he resign it any two other benefices, with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if two parish churches or their perpetual vicarages or dignities etc., namely, for five years in the case of parish churches or perpetual vicarages, or such mixed, or for life in the case of other incompatible benefices, and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases, etc. Nobilitas generis, litterarum sciencia, vite etc. (P. and G. To George Lidel, rector of the parish church of Forest in the diocese of Glasgow, bachelor in decrees. Dispensation to him (who is of noble birth by both parents, (fn. 2) and holds the said church and a canonry of Dombar in the diocese of St. Andrews and the prebend de Petcokis [therein], (fn. 3) and to whom the present pope lately made provision of the archdeaconry of Brechin, a non-major elective dignity with cure, of which he is not in possession, values not exceeding 10l., 15l., and 20l. sterling respectively) to receive together with the said church of Forest the said archdeaconry, if he obtain it in virtue of the said letters, or without the archdeaconry (vel absque illo) any one other benefice, or if he resign them (aut illis per te dimissis) any two other benefices, with cure or otherwise incompatible with one another, even if parish churches or their perpetual vicarages, or dignities etc., even if major or principal dignities, or such mixed etc., and to retain them for five years only if parish churches or perpetual vicarages, or for life if other incompatible benefices, and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases, etc. Nobilitas generis, litterarum sciencia, vite etc. (P. and A. de Cortesiis. | P. xxxviii.de Varris.) To the bishops (sic) of Coventry and Lichfield. (fn. 4) Mandate as below. The recent petition of Elisabeth countess of Shrewsbury, of the diocese of Coventry and Lichfield. Contained that formerly, when, by the instigation of the enemy of the peace of the human race, very great wars were raging in those parts, and when she, who is a powerful woman, was without the help of kinsmen, and therefore feared to lose her lands and goods, she, in order to avoid the perils which threatened her, feigned to be willing to contract espousals with Walter Blont, esquire, of the said diocese, although unequal and inferior to her in nobility and wealth, if he would defend her lands and goods from the attacks of her enemies and the perils which threatened; and that thus, for the said reasons. and without the least intention of accepting him as her betrothed or as her husband. she feignedly and with simulation promised the said esquire to accept him as her future husband, and contracted feigned espousals with him. Seeing however that, as the said petition added, it was not and is not her intention to contract espousals or marriage with the said esquire, nevertheless, in order that it may not be alleged that such espousals were contracted between them, and that she is bound on account of the foregoing to contract marriage with him, the pope has been petitioned on behalf of the said countess (fn. 5) to declare that she is not bound by reason of the said feigned espousals to contract such marriage with the said esquire, but may freely contract such marriage with any other man, unmarried and not related to her in any degree, and to decree the offspring to be born therefrom legitimate. The pope therefore orders the above bishop to summon the said esquire and others concerned, hear both sides, and decide what is canonical, causing his decision to be observed by ecclesiastical censure. To Andrew Kilqhous, priest, of the diocese of Aberdeen, bachelor in decrees. Decree etc., as below. His recent petition contained that he was formerly dispensed in virtue of letters of the major penitentiary of the apostolic see, in which he was described as of the diocese of Ross, to be, notwithstanding his illegitimacy as the son of a priest and an unmarried woman, promoted to all even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure, after which he was so promoted and ministered several times in the said orders. At the said petition, adding that although at the time of the said letters he was living in the diocese of Ross, he is a native, not of that diocese, but of the diocese of Aberdeen, wherefore he fears lest the said letters may be held surreptitious, the pope, hereby decreeing that the said letters and any consequences thereof shall hold good from the date of these presents, as if the said error did not occur, dispenses him to minister in all his orders received, and receive and retain any benefices compatible with one another and with the aforesaid benefice, of any number and kind, with or without cure, even if canonries and prebends, dignities etc., and resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases.Litterarum sciencia, vite etc. (B. and G.
