To the abbot of St. Peters, Shrewsbury (Salopie), in the diocese of Coventry and Lichfield. Mandate, at the recent petition of Richard Fitzjohn, a Friar Minor (containing that lately the present general of the said order, considering that Richard had lived laudably and religiously for many years in the convent of Shrewsbury, of the said order, and had been fruitful thereto, and considering that he was broken with age (fn. 2) and very weak in sight, granted and assigned to him for life a certain chamber with a cell, fireplace (camino), garden and other places for his use and habitation, and granted to him a number of other privileges (munera), even spiritual, as is contained in the letters of the said general, sealed with his seal) to summon the guardian and brethren of the said convent, and if he find the foregoing to be true, to confirm the said grant etc. by papal authority. To the bishop of Cloyne (Clonen.). Mandate (the pope having been informed by Thady Okeallay, a canon of the Augustinian monastery of St. Mary, Clontuascrart (sic) Omane, in the diocese of Clonfert, wont to be governed by a prior, that John Okeallay, prior thereof, an open and notorious fornicator, has committed perjury and has simonically received, in return for a sum of money, a certain [person], now a religious, then a secular, as a canon of the monastery, and, having incurred sentence of excommunication for such simony, has celebrated masses and other divine offices in contempt of the Keys (fn. 3) ) if and after Thady (who was lately dispensed by papal authority, on account of illegitimacy as the son of a prior of the said order and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure, and who from fear of John's power has no hope of obtaining justice in the city and diocese of Clonfert) accuses John before the above bishop, to summon John and others concerned, and if he find the foregoing to be true, to deprive and remove John, and in that event to collate and assign the said priory, conventual and with cure, value not exceeding 54 marks sterling, to Thady, if found fit, first receiving from him the usual oath, according to the form enclosed. To the archbishop of Tuam. Mandate, at the recent petition of Maurice Micdonnchaydi, a canon of the Augustinian monastery of Inchmacnerin (de Insula macnere) in the diocese of Elphin, of noble birth (containing that for the defence of his country, parents, brethren, kinsmen and friends he took part in arms in several conflicts, in which homicides and mutilations of limbs were committed, without however killing anybody himself, and without approving the same, but lamenting them, as he still does at present; and that he desires to be absolved from the guilt of homicide etc., and to be dispensed on account of any irregularity contracted, and to minister in the orders which he has received, and be promoted to higher even holy orders and minister therein, even in the ministry of the altar, and to receive and retain any benefices, even if dignities, of his order) to dispense the said Maurice as shall seem good to the archbishop. To the bishop of Clonfert. Mandate as below. The recent petition of Maurus Vncattanayn (fn. 4) (? recte Micattanayn, i.e. Macattanayn), a canon of the Augustinian monastery of St. Mary, Cluantaiasceart Omane, in the diocese of Clonfert, contained that whereas a discord had arisen between him and Thady Occallay (recte Oceallay), layman, nobleman, of the said diocese, and whereas in order to settle it they had appeared before a certain temporal lord of those parts, the said Thady struck Maurus with a sheathed sword and then, drawing the sword from the sheath, so gravely wounded with the sword itself a certain layman, a very special friend of Maurus, that he almost cut off his hand, and, not content with this, filled with greater fury, attacked Maurus's mother's husband, and struck him twice on the head, so hard that he fell on the floor, (fn. 5) wherefore Maurus, over provoked to anger and unable to restrain himself, threw at Thady a certain knife which he had, and accidentally hit him with it on the foot, in such wise that a few days after he died of the blow. The said petition adding that Maurus did not strike the said blow on purpose, and lamented and still laments Thady's death, of which he was not otherwise guilty, and asking the pope to absolve him from the guilt of homicide, and to rehabilitate him and dispense him to minister in the orders which he has received, even in the ministry of the altar, etc., the pope hereby orders the above bishop to dispense and absolve him in regard to the foregoing as shall seem good to the bishop. To Edmund Kyrton, a monk of the Benedictine monastery of Westminster in the diocese of London. Reservation and assignment to him, who is a priest and in about his eightieth year (seeing that he has this day by his proctor ceded to the pope the rule and administration of the said monastery, immediately subject to the Roman church, and seeing that the pope, admitting such cession, has made provision of the monastery to George, [now] abbot) of a yearly life pension of 200 marks sterling on the fruits etc. of the monastery, to be paid to him by abbot George, who has consented, and by his successors, half on the Nativity of St. John Baptist and half at Christmas; with the usual penalties for delay in payment, etc. Religionis zelus, litterarum sciencia, (fn. 7)vite etc. Concurrent mandate to the bishops of Exeter and Oviedo (Oueten.) and Vincent Clementis, archdeacon of Wil[t]shire in the church of Salisbury.
