Exemption etc., as below. The pope recites his late erection, at the petition of James king of Scots and the provost, bailies, consuls and commonalty of the town of Edynburg in the diocese of St. Andrews, of the parish church of St. Giles therein into a collegiate church, with a provostship, being a principal. dignity, and divers canonries and prebends and offices etc. At the petition of the same king and provost etc. (containing that the said king, who usually resides in the said town, intends to enrich the said church and the persons thereof with several immunities and privileges), for its immunity from Patrick bishop of St. Andrews and his successors, after the manner of a number of other collegiate churches of the realm, the pope hereby exempts the said church and its provost, canons, chaplains, vicars-choral, priests, (fn. 2) and all its other clergy, and their servants etc., present and future, from all jurisdiction etc. of the said bishop and his successors, and their officials etc., and takes it and them under the protection of St. Peter and of the pope and the apostolic see, etc. In token of the said exemption the provost and chapter are to pay to the papal Camera a yearly cess of one ounce of pure gold on the eve of the feast of SS. To the bishop of Whiteherne (Candide casse [sic]) and the abbot of Neobottyll’ in the diocese of St. Andrews. Mandate, at the recent petition of George Seton, lord of the place of Seton in the diocese of St. Andrews (containing that the parish church of that place is notable amongst the parish churches of the said diocese, and has abundant fruits etc., and that he, who is the lay patron, is ready to augment them and desires the said church to be erected into a collegiate church, and a provostship to be erected therein and a number of canonries and prebends) if they find the foregoing to be true, to erect the said church, on its voidance by the resignation etc. of the present rector, into a collegiate church, its value not exceeding 20l. sterling before, and 40l. sterling after such erection, and to create in it a provostship, being a principal dignity, and six canonries and as many prebends, etc. and to ordain that the provost and canons may keep two boys and a clerk to be instructed by them in the rite of the said church, and that they and such boys and clerk may continually reside therein, and that they may exercise the cure of souls of the parishioners and serve the church in divine offices both by day and by night, etc. Romanus pontifex beati Petri … successor. To the abbot of Paisley (de Pasleto) in the diocese of Glasgow, the chancellor of Glasgow and the dean of Reims. Mandate, at the recent petition of William Narne, priest, of the diocese of St. Andrews (containing that on the voidance of the perpetual vicarage of the parish church of Mulyne in the diocese of Dunkeld by the death of Duncan de Athelia (recte Atholia), the abbot and convent of the Benedictine monastery of Dunfermeline in the diocese of St. Andrews, the ancient patrons, presented the said William to Thomas bishop of Dunkeld, who unduly refused to institute him, from which refusal he has appealed to the apostolic see; and adding that he doubts whether the said presentation holds good) to collate and assign to him the said vicarage, value not exceeding 6l. sterling. Mandate to collate and assign to William Fergusii, priest, of the diocese of St. Andrews, bachelor in decrees, the archdeaconry of Lothian (Loudonie) in the Augustinian church of St. Andrews, a non-major dignity, wont to be assigned to secular clerks, value not exceeding 60l. sterling, void by the death of Nicholas Graham; whether it be so void, or by the death of William Crosar or of James Lynsay or by the resignation of the said Nicholas or William Crosar or James, or in any other way.Litterarum sciencia, vite etc. (L. To Thomas Winterborne, archdeacon of Canterbury, doctor of laws. Indult to him, who is auditor of the archiepiscopal court of Thomas cardinal priest of St. Ciriac's in Termis (who is also by papal grant and dispensation archbishop of Canterbury), and commissary of all other causes committed to the said cardinal, that the confessor of his choice, secular or regular, may once only, after hearing his confession, grant him absolution from all his excesses and sins, even in cases reserved to the apostolic see (except cases of offence against ecclesiastical liberty, and other cases named), and enjoin penance, absolve him from all sentences of excommunication etc., enjoining penance etc., dispense him on account of any irregularity contracted, dispense him to minister in his orders, and rehabilitate him. He is to make satisfaction to whom it is due within a term appointed by his confessor; if not, he is eo ipso, on the lapse of such term, to fall again under such sentences. Benigno sunt tibi. (L.
