To the bishop of Derry (Deren.). Mandate, as below. The recent petition of Michael, archbishop of Dublin, contained that at the time of his appointment to that church he promised by oath to visit in person or by deputy every two years the shrines of the Apostles, and added that he, who is in his seventieth year and more, and has been twice imprisoned by his enemies and grievously beaten, (fn. 2) has not been able to visit the said shrines, and that he has meanwhile exercised pontifical offices and celebrated masses and other divine offices, and taken part therein, but not in contempt of the Keys. The pope therefore orders the above bishop to absolve the said archbishop from the crime of perjury etc., enjoining a salutary penance etc., and rehabilitate him, and to grant that for ten years next to come he shall not be bound to visit the said shrines, etc. Ad ea ex apostolice.
