Boniface IX.—at the petition of the abbess and convent of St. Mary's, Brusyerde, of the order of St. Clare, in the diocese of Norwich, containing that their monastery, in which were twenty-two nuns, besides their servants, on account of floods, pestilences, the burning of divers of its goods and other mishaps, had become so poor that the whole of it, and especially its refectory and dormitory, were soon likely to fall to ruin; and that Roger Wlverstone and John Stoneham (or Stoueham), laymen, of the said diocese, proposed to give them, for purpose of appropriation, their patronage of the parish church of Sitton in the said diocese—ordered the abbot of St. Mary's, Leyston, in the said diocese, to appropriate to the monastery, value not exceeding 60 marks, the said church, value not exceeding 8, so that on the resignation or death of the rector they might take possession, a portion for a perpetual vicar being reserved. Their recent petition contained that the said abbot made the appropriation, and added that they took possession on voidance in a certain way, the said portion being reserved, and that they are still in possession, but that they fear lest the appropriation be comprehended under pope Boniface's general annulment made on 11 Kal. Jan. anno 14 [1402, Cal. Lett. V, p. 599] of appropriations, and lest they be molested by Alexander Colewe (or Colowe or Colebre or Colobre), priest, of the said diocese, who is said to have impetrated the church from the apostolic see as void under the said annulment. The pope therefore confirms the appropriation, and grants that it shall hold good from the date of pope Boniface's letters, even if the said Alexander have had such papal provision. Ad perp, rei mem. Grant—at his recent petition, containing that on the voidance of the above abbey by the death without the Roman court of abbot Laurence, provision was made to him thereof, it being said to be void by the death of abbot Thomas, by letters of Angelus Corario, called Gregory XII, [dated] in the city of Rimini, where that pope was residing with his court, after the departure of the cardinals from the city of Lucca, and before the council of Pisa, in which the said Angelus Corario and Peter de Luna, called Benedict XIII, were condemned, by virtue of which provision he obtained possession of the rule and administration of the goods of the monastery; and adding that on account of the error in the name of his predecessor, and because the provision was made after the said departure, he doubts whether he may not be molested—that the said provision shall hold good as if it had been made before the said departure and as though the said error had not occurred.
