Fox, esq., Receiver General and Cashier of Customs, to pay 37l. 10s. 0d. to John Taylour, gent., for making an accompt of the receipts of the Customs and of the distinct and particular application thereof ; and for divers other services by Treasury direction in the quarter ended 1689, Lady day. Same, dormant, to Edward Nicholas, esq., Receiver General in the Alienation Office, to pay the fees or salaries' bills and incidents' bills of said Office : viz. 40l. per term each to Peregrine Bertie, Sir Edmund Turner and James Saunderson, esq., as the Treasury Lords' deputies and Commissioners therein ; the like fee to himself as Receiver General ; 20l. per term to George Morley, esq., [as] Master of Chancery [in said Office] ; 5l. each per term to Henry Clerk and Saml. Same to the officers of the Ordnance. I have paid 600l. to Charles Bertie, Treasurer of the Ordnance, in pursuance of the order of the Lords Committee[s] for the Affairs of Ireland of Mar. 27 last, same being to be distributed among the armourers and gunsmiths who are employed in making arms for his Majesty's stores. Treasury letters patent appointing John Thompson to be solicitor for bringing in taxes in the cities of London and Westminster and co. Middlesex for any supply granted to their Majesties by any Act or Acts passed or to be passed in this present session of Parliament : he to attend the Commissioners for putting the said Acts in execution and to see the said moneys thereof duly assessed and collected ; in order whereto he is to inspect the books of receipt of the Receivers General as often as he shall find occasion and in case of defaults to apply to the said Commissioners for redress thereof : and in all cases to give an account of his proceedings to the Treasury Lords. April 3. Royal warrant to the Attorney or Solicitor General for a great seal to grant to John Berkeley and William Shaw, esqrs., the office of one of the two searchers at Gravesend, to wit the office they have lately enjoyed : during pleasure and as amply as Edward Godfrey or they themselves have heretofore enjoyed same and as amply as Henry, Earl of Clarendon, William Chiffinch and Martin Fowkes, the trustees for Thomas Chiffinch, the other searcher there. Royal warrant to the Attorney or Solicitor General for a great seal to grant to Sir Robert Cotton of Combermere, co. Chester, kt. and bart., the office of steward and keeper of the Courts leet etc. of the lordship, manor and lands of Denbigh, alias Denbigh Lands, in North Wales and of all the hundreds etc. in said lordship : with power to constitute and depute to the office of Recorder of said lordship and manor and lands : which said office was lately granted by James II to William, Marquess of Powys, by a patent now determined and become void. The present grant to be during pleasure with the wages or fee of 40l. per an. for the office of steward and 6s. 8d. per an. for the office of Recorder : all as amply as said Marquess or as William Wynn, gent., or any other predecessor therein. Same to same for a same to grant to Thomas Fox the office of Receiver General and Cashier of Customs and subsidies, new impositions, Four and a Half per cent Duty and Coinage Duty : with duties and powers as in the case of his predecessor Richard Kent therein, whose grant is now void [by the abdication of James II] : to be during pleasure and with the salary of 1,000l. per an. Further, as the said Fox has lent and hereafter may lend to the King several considerable sums on the credit of Customs tallies it is to be herein declared that same shall be repaid out of the Customs with 6 per cent interest: and to the end that the King may retain in his hands 30,000l. of said Fox's money (or so much thereof as the King shall think fit) the said Fox is herein to covenant to allow said sum to so remain in the King's hands at the simple interest of 6 per cent : and the King does hereby declare that said Fox shall not be removed from said office (save for fraud or misfeasance) until he be fully paid all such his loan money with the interest of the same. Treasury warrant to Sir William Godolphin, Auditor of Wales, and to the Receiver of Crown Revenues of South Wales to allow and pay what is due to Christmas last on the fee of 26l. 13s. 4d. per an. to John, Earl of Carbery, for his office of Governor of Milford Haven. Ibid.
Same to Thomas Fox, Customs Cashier, to pay to Henry Ayloffe, the King's Remembrancer, 45l. 12s. 0d. for the year ending Christmas last on the fees usually paid him by the customers of the several [out]ports of England and Wales for passing their accounts. Ibid, p. 124.
Same to same to pay 340l. 14s. 4d. to same for parchment and other necessaries, detailed, for the blank books for the customers, comptrollers and searchers in all the [out]ports of England, Wales and Berwick for the above year.

Treasury warrant to the Customs Commissioners to employ Mr. Eustick as collector of Penzance in accordance with the warrant of Nov. 3 last, supra, he being no otherwise disqualified for same by being an inhabitant of or related to the place than by having been for some time deputy to the customer there. April 4. Henry Guy to the Commissioners of the Great Seal. The Treasury Lords have passed a fiat for re-granting to Anthony Meeke and Robert Cowley their office of one of the five undersearchers of London port. My Lords therefore desire that it may pass the seal. Out Letters (General) XI, p. 482.
Same to Mr. Anderton [collector of Chester port], enclosing a copy [missing] of an order of Council of this day. You are to lay out 1,000l. in such provisions as Mr. Harbord shall direct and to take care that same be forthwith shipped at Liverpool for Londonderry. Draw a bill for said 1,000l. on said Harbord. This sum does not relate to the 2,000l. which the Earl of Ranelagh by the last post directed you to pay to Col. Conningham. Ibid, p. 483.
April 5. Henry Guy to the Customs Commissioners, enclosing papers as follows from Marshal Schombergh concerning some goods belonging to Mris. Elizabeth Gigou, who is fled from France. You are to deliver said goods.
Appending : three notes of said goods seized Oct. 30, Nov. 15 and 27 last (gloves, Jessamin etc.), being imported in Mr. Haslewood's vessel, in the Bachellier of London, Tho. Bancks master, the Fortune of London and the Charity of Margate, Hum. Pudner master, from Bordeaux, and seized by Mr. Rafford, Mr. Conner, Tho. White and Mr. Hunt, Customs officers.

Same to Mr. Hall to examine the proposed securities of Henry Maynard as a Teller of the Exchequer ; viz. himself in 3,000l. ; Lord Maynard in 700l. ; Banniter Maynard, Sir John Bramston of Skreens in Essex, Jo. Wroth of Loughton in Essex, William Scawen, merchant in London, and James Smith, woollen draper on Ludgate Hill, in 600l. each : total security, 7,300l. Ibid, p. 484.
Same to the Customs Commissioners to deliver to bearer William Welshe, Customs free, his Majesty's horses, coaches, harness and furniture and hounds arrived from Holland in the Rotterdam, Demyater, Prince of Orange and two other ships. Ibid.
The Treasury Lords to the respective and several bodies of Commissioners of Assessments for the present Aid, viz. in each county and place, detailed, in which such Commissioners are established by the Act for the said Aid. We directed the Agents for Taxes to send to the coroners of your county or place a certain number of the printed copies of the said Act and also of the Act for the late Seventeen Months' Assessment [29 Car. II, c. 1] to which the said present Act doth refer, desiring the said coroners to immediately deliver them to you in order to your putting same in execution. We doubt not of your zeal therein. At your first meeting you are to appoint an honest and responsible Receiver General and take security from him in the King's name. Send us an account of such securities and from time to time of your proceedings in assessing and levying the said assessment. Ibid, pp. 485-7.

Same to same of the petition of Sutton Oglethorp for a new grant of the office of searcher in Carlisle port granted him by Charles II for petitioner's long sufferings by imprisonment and perpetual banishment. Ibid.
Treasury reference to the Customs Commissioners of the petition of Mr. Frontin, shewing that he has imported from France five tuns of wine in uncertain cask which he would enter according to contents, but the officers insist on their being entered as tearses whereby petitioner would lose 36 gallons in every tun : therefore praying that his casks may be gauged according to law. April 6. Henry Guy to same, enclosing an order of Council [missing] concerning the sending of tin from Cornwall into France. You are to permit the vessels mentioned therein to transport same.
As to Mr. Sansom's letter concerning your attending the Treasury Lords this afternoon, I am to tell you that my Lords cannot meet because the King has signed a warrant for a new Treasury Commission. But they think it absolutely necessary that you attend the [Privy] Council on Monday afternoon.
