Royal warrant to the Clerk of the Signet for a privy
seal to authorise Elias Ashmole to put in execution
his office (of or as Comptroller of Excise to which
he was appointed 1661, April 3) not only [as far as
concerns the Excise] within the city of London
and Bills of Mortality, but also to the Country
[Excise] vouchers as by the royal warrant of 1674,
Dec. 23, which so enlarged his said office : which
power has since been renewed and continued to
the present time and the King thinks it fit and
necessary that same be so continued. Ashmole is
therefore hereby to put his said office in execution
upon the vouchers which are or shall be transmitted
to the Excise Commissioners from all the counties
of England and likewise upon their books of accounts
relating to that [Country Excise] Duty. For the
better carrying on of this service four extraordinary
deputies or clerks are to be continued with an
additional allowance of 100l. per an. to him and
400l. per an. to said deputies : and payments
hitherto made on such additional allowances are

Same to same for a same for allowances as follows
to be made in the account of Sir John Guise, kt.,
late Colonel of a Regiment which was raised for
the King's service at his first landing in the West
of England. In his said account Guise voluntarily
charges himself with several sums received on
account of said Regiment between 1688, Nov. 12,
and Jan. 6 following, viz. 232l. 12s. 0d. from Jacob
Vander Esch ; 50l. from Sir Jo[h]n Trenchard ;
1,006l. from Richard Tooth, collector of Excise
at Bristol and Gloucester ; 76l. 10s. 0d. from Richard
Cox, Receiver General of Hearthmoney in co.
Gloucester ; and 15l. out of the revenue of the
Wine Licence Office. The total charge amounts to
1,380l. 2s. 0d., and against this he craves allowance
of 1,388l. 6s. 8d. by him paid to the officers and
soldiers of said Regiment for 56 days, 1688, Nov. 12,
to Jan. 6 following. Thereupon the Earl of Ranelagh
has certified that the pay of said Regiment (consisting
of a Col., Lieut. Col., Major, five Captains,
eight Lieutenants, 8 Ensigns, 16 Serjeants, 24
corporals, 16 drummers and 400 soldiers, chaplain,
adjutant, quarter master, chirurgeon and mate)
for said time amounts to said 1,388l. 6s. 8d. and
that said Regiment was placed on the establishment
of the Army from 1688-9, Jan. 1, from which time
they have been paid by the Paymaster of the Forces :
so that said Guise has paid to said Regiment six
days' more pay than ought to have been paid,
amounting to 148l. 15s. 0d. ; the same having been
paid by him before he knew they were to be placed
on the establishment, and it is impossible for him
to deduct the same, having long since quitted the
Regiment and several of the officers and soldiers
being changed. The King being well satisfied of
the truth of said allegations hereby allows the
whole of said 1,388l. 6s. 8d., notwithstanding nonproduction
of such formal warrants, receipts or
other vouchers as are requisite by the strict rules
of the Exchequer. Further, Guise is hereby to
be allowed 45l. for his charges in passing the said
account. Further, the respective receivers and
others who paid sums as above to said Guise are
hereby to be pro tanto discharged in their respective
accounts. |

moneys as shall be necessary for the settlement,
maintenance and carrying on of the service thereof. |

that their full pay be paid them from time to time
as the rest of the Army shall receive their subsistence.
