Ireland. By petition John Osgood, Isaac Davis
and John Carew, of London and Bristol, merchants,
have represented that some goods were shipped at
Rotterdam on the Friend's Adventure, John Madox
master, bound from [sic for to] Bristol, who ran
away with the said ship and cargo to Waterford
in the time of the late King James's residence in
Ireland, and lodged the goods in the custody of
Edward Brown of Waterford, pretending they
were his own property, and same are now under
seizure as the goods of the said Madox ; therefore
praying that same may be discharged. On reference
from you to the collector of Waterford port, it
appears by the oaths of said Brown and Benjamin
Lamb of Waterford that the facts appear as above
and that the importation to Ireland was contrary to
petitioners' orders. You are to restore the goods
to the petitioners on payment of the duties and
the charges of storing and keeping : all in accordance
with your report. |

belonging to Edward Davies, John Hinson and
Lionel Delawafer (which were seized as pirates'
goods in 1688 by Capt. Rowe, captain of the Dunbarton
frigate in Virginia) be restored to them,
except only the sum or value of 300l. ; which,
together with the fourth part of what remains in the
hands of said Capt. Rowe or his executors, or which
shall be recovered from them, is to be disposed of
towards the erecting a free school or college in
Virginia, in case the same shall be founded by
grant from their Majesties ; and if the same shall
not be so founded, then to be to such other pious
or charitable uses as their Majesties shall direct :
it appearing by the Treasury Lords' report on the
petition of the said Davies et al. that the petitioners
by writing under their hands had owned themselves
to be pirates and had claimed the benefit of a
Proclamation issued by the late King James for
the suppressing of pirates and privateers in America
by force or by assurance of pardon, but had not
strictly complied with the conditions of the said
Proclamation, and that they are willing that said

of pepper, part of a larger quantity which they
entered inwards in July and September, 1690, and
re-shipped for export on the Society, George Giles
master, for Leghorn Dec. 23 following (being within
the time allowed for drawing back the half subsidy) ;
the said ship being disabled and forced into
Plymouth, where the pepper was landed, and by
leave of the Customs officers was put into warehouse
pending the opportunity for export, and
afterwards in February, 1690-1 (being still within
the said time allowance) part thereof (236 bags),
was laden on the Armes of Poland, Jacob Peiters
master, being all the ship could take, the remaining
84 bags being left in possession of the Customs
officers till 22 Jan., 1691-2, when they were laden
on the James, Capt. Bishop commander, being the
first opportunity that presented itself for shipment
at Plymouth for same. |
