Relaxation in perpetuity of two years and two quarantines of enjoined penance to all faithful whenever they visit the church of St. Mary and SS. George the Martyr and Edward the Confessor of the castle royal of Wyndesore in the diocese of Salisbury, and say therein the Lord's Prayer and an Ave Maria (fn. 2) for the exaltation of the holy Roman church and the pope's safety, and the prosperity of Edward king of England, his mother, wife and children, and for the souls of his father and other his predecessors, and after death for the souls of the said king, mother, wife and children. To the abbot of SS. Peter and Paul's, Cluayneys, in the diocese of Clogher, the dean of Clogher, and Charles Macmagnuassa, a canon of the same. Mandate, as below. The recent petition of Nellanus Magrath, clerk, of the diocese of Clogher, contained that although at a time immemorial the rectory of Carna in the said diocese was by authority of the ordinary united in perpetuity to the priory of Lochdearg, O.S.A., in the said diocese, there is at present no rector and no prior or convent in the said monastery, divine offices are not celebrated there, and the fruits of the said monastery are in the possession of divers clerks; and added that if the said union, if any, were dissolved, and the said rectory collated to some fit person who would celebrate masses and other divine offices by himself or by another, it would be to the increase of divine worship and the welfare of the souls of the parishioners of the said church. The pope, therefore, hereby orders the above three to summon the said clerks, etc., and if they find the foregoing to be true, to dissolve the said union, if any, and in that event to collate and assign the said rectory, value 4 marks sterling, to the said Nellanus, who, notwithstanding his illegitimacy or the son of a priest and an unmarried woman, has by authority of the ordinary been made a clerk, and whom the pope hereby dispenses to be promoted to all [even holy] orders, and receive and retain the said rectory, notwithstanding the said defect, etc. Vite etc. (N. Union, as below. Upon its being lately set forth to the pope by James Cantwel, clerk, of the diocese of Lismore, that when holding the treasurership of Cashel, a dignity, he obtained by canonical collation the chancellorship of the same church, which is also a dignity, and which has cure, and detained it and the said treasurership together for more than a month against Execrabilis, without dispensation, thereby contracting disability, the pope rehabilitated him, and ordered provision to be made to him of the archdeaconry of Cashel, a non-major dignity, which was held by John, [now] bishop of Ossory, and was to become void by the promotion of the said John to the said church, and by his consecration, the pope's will being that the said James, who had given up the said treasurership, should give up the said chancellorship. At the recent petition of the said James (whom, after he had been made a clerk, notwithstanding his illegitimacy as the son of a priest and an unmarried woman, nobles, the pope dispensed to be promoted to all even holy orders, and receive and retain for life the said treasurership of Cashel and that of Lismore, provision of which the pope successively ordered to be made to him, and with one of them any one other benefice, and without them any two [other] benefices, with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if parish churches etc., and to resign them, etc.), containing that the fruits, etc., of the said archdeaconry (provision of which was afterwards made to him, on its voidance by the consecration of the said bishop at the Roman court) are insufficient for his maintenance, etc., and that if the said chancellorship, which he has duly given up in accordance with the pope's said will, were united thereto for as long as he holds the latter, he could more easily maintain himself, etc., the pope hereby unites the said chancellorship of Cashel, a non-major dignity, value 10 marks sterling, void and reserved by the said constitution, to the said archdeaconry for as long as the said James shall hold the latter. To the bishop of Salisbury and the abbot of Stanlai in the diocese of Salisbury. Mandate to grant to John, abbot of the monastery of Malmesburi, O.S.B., immediately belonging to the Roman church, in the diocese of Salisbury, who on account of old age and bodily weakness, loss of sight and grave infirmities, is no longer able to rule the said monastery, etc., that in the event of his resigning, and provision being made of it to another person, he may enjoy and use for life all the insignia etc. which he at present enjoys and uses, and moreover to reserve and assign to him a yearly life pension of a third of the fruits etc. of the said monastery, to be paid to him by such person (provided that the latter consent) and by his successors. To Richard, bishop of Salisbury. Dispensation for him, who is of the privy council of king Edward, to receive and retain for life with his church of Salisbury, or with any other cathedral, even a metropolitan church, a canonry and prebend of the church called the chapel of St. Stephen the Martyr near the royal palace at Vestmoster, in the diocese of London, to which canonry and prebend belong certain houses contiguous to the said palace, and which canonry and prebend are in the patronage of the king of England, so that he may the more conveniently attend the said council; and also similarly to receive and retain for life the deanery called the wardenship of the chapel called the chapel royal of St. George the Martyr, Windsor (de Vindesora), in the diocese of Salisbury, which is also of the patronage of the said king, and in which is a certain military order, called the order of the Garter (Galterii), of which he is chancellor. To Ralph Bothe, rector of Long Newton in the diocese of Durham, bachelor of laws. Dispensation, as below. The pope lately dispensed him to receive and retain for life with the said church any one other benefice, or if he resigned the said church any two other benefices, with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if parish churches, etc., and to resign them, etc. The pope now dispenses him, who by virtue of the said dispensation holds the archdeaconry of York, a non-major dignity, collated to him by authority of the ordinary, to receive and retain for life with the said church and archdeaconry, even if it be elective and have cure, or with such other two incompatible benefices, any other benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if a parish church, etc., and to resign it, etc., provided that of such three incompatible benefices not more than two be parish churches, etc. Litterarum scientia, vite etc. [2½ pp. +] |
