To Richard Aleyn, a monk of the priory of Sela alias Sele, O.S.A. [sic], in the diocese of Chichester. Dispensation, as below. The pope dispensed him to receive and retain for life, etc., as in the preceding, and upon its being subsequently set forth to the pope on his behalf that no mention was made in the said dispensation of the priory of Sela alias Sele, O.S.B., in the diocese of Chichester, which he was then holding, wherefore he doubted whether it held good, and whether it might not be held surreptitious, the pope granted that the said dispensation should hold good, notwithstanding the said omission, and willed that as soon as he obtained such a benefice he should, as he himself offered, resign the said priory. The pope now dispenses him, who alleges that he has since resigned the said priory, to receive and retain for life in commendam with such secular benefice any other benefice with or without cure wont to be held by the same secular clerks, even if it be a parish church, etc., and to resign it, etc. The pope further dispenses him, in the event of his being elected to any monastery of the said [sic] order, (fn. 2) and his being appointed abbot thereof, to retain therewith in commendam for life one only of the said secular benefices. Eugenius IV granted that the late abbot William and his successors might hear the confessions of all their monks and lay brothers and household servants, and of the parishioners of the said monastery, and that any monk of the said monastery, a priest, might hear the confessions of the said abbot William and his successors, etc., grant absolution, and enjoin penance, except in cases reserved to the apostolic see [Cal. Papal Lett., Vol. VIII, p. 348]. At the recent petition of the above abbot Thomas, containing that he and the abbot for the time being cannot always be present in person, the pope hereby grants indult for him and his successors to appoint in their stead, whenever they think fit, one or two of the monks, masters in theology or doctors of decrees, who shall have the same power as they have by the said grant. To the abbots of Bermondesey and Stratford, in the diocese, of Winchester and London, and the prior of Christchurch, London. Mandate, as below. The recent petition of Cristina Baker of Intewode, mulier, of the diocese of Norwich, contained that upon Henry Grey, knight, of the said diocese, falsely relating to John Selot, official of Norwich, that she had defamed him, the said official, proceeding without lawful form, declared by an unjust definitive sentence that she had incurred the sentence of excommunication contained in a certain provincial constitution of the province of Canterbury [constitutiones Johannis Peckham, in Wilkins, Concilia, tom. II, p. 35], ordered her to be publicly proclaimed excommunicate, and afterwards procured her imprisonment; that although she repeatedly requested James, bishop of Norwich, and the said official to absolve her from the said sentence and give her justice, they refused to do so, wherefore she has appealed to the apostolic see, and has petitioned the pope to order her to be conditionally (ad cautelam) absolved from the said sentence, and to commit the cause of the said appeal, etc., and that of the principal matter to some upright men of those parts. The pope, therefore, hereby orders the above three to summon the said Henry and others concerned, grant the said Cristina conditional absolution, hear both sides and, taking cognizance of the principal matter also, decide what is just, without appeal, causing their decision to be observed by ecclesiastical censure.
