	Membrane 39.
Aug. 1. Westminster.	To William Eyremyn the king's clerk, treasurer of Calais. Order to survey the works done by William de Risceby upon the repair of Oye castle, and to account with him for his expenses, paying what shall in presence of the controller of Calais be found due to him, or making a bill of the same. By C.
July 26. Westminster.	To John Herlyng constable of Rysyng castle co. Norffolk, John de Pynchun the king's receiver there, and to their representatives. Order, upon petition of the prior and convent of Westacre of the patronage of Thomas de Bello Campo earl of Warrewyk and founded by his forefathers, if they be not tenants of the said castle nor bound to do such service thereto, to stay the demand made upon them to keep watches or do other service therein, releasing any distress made for that cause; as the king has learned that, by colour of the king's commission to compel the tenants of the castle to perform the services due from them, the constable etc. have distrained the prior and convent to keep watches of ten men in the castle every night at their cost, though they hold no lands of the king or castle or of the king's lordship there, and ought not to do any service towards the ward thereof.
Aug. 6. Westminster.	To the steward, mayor and bailiffs of Droghda in Ireland for the time being. Order henceforward of the farm of the town to pay to Nicholas Gernoun or his attorney as well 20l. a year of rent granted to him for life for his good service by letters patent of the late king on 22 February in the 16th year of his reign as 46l. 13s. 4d. a year likewise granted him for life or until provision of lands to that yearly value in Mith and Uriel should be made him by the king, namely on 28th August in the 19th year after taking on him the order of knighthood, the former rent previously held for life of the said king's grant by Simon filz Richard and seized as forfeit into the said king's hand; as both rents were taken as forfeit into the late king's hand for that with assent of the prelates, lords and others of the council order was made that every lord and other of England having or claiming lands etc. in Ireland should under pain of forfeiture thereof be there before Easter in the 43rd year of that reign or send his quota of men according to the value of the same in aid of the defence of Ireland, and because the said Nicholas abiding in England came not in person nor sent men there by that feast; and on 11th July in the 47th year the late king pardoned him that forfeiture, granting him both rents as aforesaid, and granting him all the issues of the former and arrears of the latter rent since the forfeiture, and licence to make his abode in England during his life the order aforesaid or any other orders to the contrary notwithstanding, provided he should do and support what should be incumbent upon him for defence of Ireland by reason of the said rents.

Aug. 18. Westminster.	To Robert Hulle escheator in Devon. Order to deliver to William de Latymer and to Edward heir of Hugh de Courtenay earl of Devon all the lands of the said earl and the issues thereof taken since his death, except lands which the earl held jointly with Margaret his wife and Elizabeth de Veer, and lands assigned by the king in dower to the said Margaret; as the late king granted to the said William and Edward for a yearly farm to be rendered at the exchequer the wardship of all the earl's lands taken into his land by the earl's death and by reason of the said heir's nonage.

Aug. 12. Westminster.	To Robert Hulle escheator in Devon. Order to take the fealty of Elizabeth de Veer, and to remove the king's hand and meddle no further with the manor of Whitfeld and a moiety of the hundred of Coliton taken into the king's hand by the death of Hugh de Courtenay earl of Devon, delivering to her and Margaret late his wife any issues thereof taken; as it was found by inquisition, by the escheator taken at the late king's command, that by fine the said earl held the premises jointly with the said Margaret and Elizabeth in chief by knight service, and the king has commanded Henry Percehay to take the said Margaret's fealty.
	To the same. Like order to remove the king's hand from the manors of Whitewell, Huntebere and Nywenham Courtenay, the advowsons of Stoke Daumarle and Wodele, a messuage and 20 acres of land at le More, a messuage, a garden containing 1 acre, 100 acres of land, 30 acres of meadow and a meadow called Sporemede in Stotecombe, Milham and Loneclif, a corn mill (molendinum blaereticum) and 20 acres of land within the manor of Mousbery, a messuage, 100 acres of land, 12 acres of meadow and 20s. of rent in Broklond Tril and Smalcombe, 1 acre of meadow and 1 acre of moor and alder wood in the hundred of Coliton and Yurdebery, the manor of Tousanyston and 12 acres of land within the manor of Exmynstre thereto adjacent, a messuage, a garden containing one rood, 30 acres of land and 60s. of rent in Holdham, 40s. of rent at Cotteford within the manor of Sydebery, 20s. of rent in Boklond Chaylowe, 13d. of rent in Lokkesore, 34s. of rent in Midelton, the manor of Norton by Stokeflemyng, and divers messuages, lands etc. in Clifton, Dertemuth and Herdenesse, 8l. of rent in Holbegheton, the manor of Northpole, 30s. of rent at Pole Antony by Tiverton, 60s. of rent at Pontesford by Colompton and the advowsons of the churches of All Saints and St. Leonard in the city of Exeter, all held jointly by the said earl and Margaret his wife, the said manors of Whitwell, Huntebere and Nywenham, which are held in chief, and the advowsons of Stoke Daumerle and Wodele by divers fines, the residue of the premises, which are held of others than the king, by gift of Robert de Veer knight and others.
	To Robert James escheator in Somerset and Dorset. Like order, mutatis mutandis, to remove the king's hand from a moiety of the manor of Crukerne and the knights' fees thereto pertaining, a messuage, 100 acres of land and 10 acres of meadow in Burelesmulle within the manor of Westcoker co. Somerset, and the manors of Hulle by Ywermynstre and Brodewynsore co. Dorset with the hundred thereof, all held in chief, which by divers fines the said earl held jointly with the said Margaret, also from a messuage, 120 acres of land and 24s. of rent in Crukerne, the moiety of a messuage, one virgate and one 'ferdell' of land in Hemyngton, the manors of Sampford Brit and Torveston, 4l. of rent in Wachet, Wiliton and Stokegoumery, the manor of Styvelegh, eight messuages, one carucate of land and 20 acres of meadow in Jevelchestre and the soke, and the advowson of Jevelchestre co. Somerset, and the manor of Corfton co. Dorset and the advowson of the chapel, all held of others than the king, which he likewise held jointly with her by gift of John atte Halle and others.
Aug. 14. Westminster.	To Robert atte Hulle escheator in Devon. Order to deliver to Margaret who was wife of Hugh de Courtenay earl of Devon, of whom the king has commanded Henry de Percehay to take an oath that she will not marry without his licence, the manor of Coliton called Colecombe with a moiety of the hundred of Coliton and the borough of Coliford thereto adjacent, the manor of Chalvelegh, the manor and borough of Chilmelegh, the manor and hundred of Exmynstre with certain lands etc. in Tengmouth thereto pertaining, and the manor of Ken, which with the assent of Edward cousin and heir of the earl and William de Latymer knight to whom (quibus) the late king committed the wardship of the earl's lands the king has assigned to her in dower of his castles, lands etc. the manors of Sutton Courteney and Woddesden excepted, assigning also the manor of Westcoker and hundred of Coker, a moiety of the manor of Crukerne co. Somerset and the hundred thereof, the manor of Ebrighton co. Dorset, and 34s. of rent in Cranwell co. Oxford, rendering yearly 7l. 5s. 4d., the excess of her dower, to the king or his said farmers until the lawful age of the heir and then to the said heir, and saving to them sufficient wood and underwood for repair of the mills and weirs of Exilonde, Westyate, Shipeshead and Toppesham in the manors of Exmynstre and Ken.
	To Robert James escheator in Somerset and Dorset. Like order to deliver in dower to the said Margaret the manor of Westcoker, the hundred of Coker, a moiety of the manor of Crukerne co. Somerset and the hundred, and the manor of Ebrighton co. Dorset.
	The like to Nicholas de Somerton escheator in Oxfordshire concerning 34s. of rent in Cranwell.
Aug. 14. Westminster.	To John Parker of Olneye escheator in Bukinghamshire. Order in her presence and in the presence of Edward cousin and heir of Hugh de Courteney earl of Devon and William Latymer or of their attorneys to assign to Margaret who was the earl's wife dower of the manor and advowson of Woddesdon.
	The like to Nicholas de Somerton escheator in Berkshire concerning the manor and advowson of Sutton Courteney.
Sept. 14. Westminster.	To Robert James escheator in Somerset. Order to remove the king's hand and meddle no further with a moiety of the manor of Crukerne, and the advowsons of the portion of the rectory of Crukerne, the portion of the deacon of that church, the portion of the subdeacon, the portion of Mynstreton chapel thereto annexed, the chantry of St. Mary in the said church, and the chantry of St. Mary in the churchyard, delivering to the said Margaret any issues taken of the said moiety; as the king has learned by inquisition that by fine the said moiety held in chief, whereto pertain those advowsons, was held by the earl at his death jointly with the said Margaret by gift and feoffment of William Chebesey and John Horncastell.

Aug. 20. Westminster.	To the collectors of customs in the port of Newcastle upon Tyne. Order to publish among the merchants there an order made by the king and council, with the advice of certain merchants of the realm, that all wool, woolfells and hides passing out of the realm before Christmas next shall pass between the Exaltation of Holy Cross and the quinzaine of Michaelmas, and that every merchant willing then to lade the same shall have in hand a moiety of the custom and subsidy for the same ready to be paid in the receipt of the exchequer at London on the eve of the Exaltation aforesaid, and shall have security of merchants of London to take to the staple of Calais so much as he shall so pay the moiety of the custom and subsidy upon, and no merchant shall take any over before Christmas if the moiety thereupon shall not then be paid, that the other moiety shall be paid when the same be laded in ships, and that no ship and no person under pain of forfeiture shall pass out with that or other merchandise before the said feast without special command and licence of the king; and order to suffer all merchants native and alien between the said dates to take over to the staple of Calais all wool etc. whereupon they shall be assured by certificate or letter of the treasurer that a moiety of the custom and subsidy is so paid, first paying the other moiety as aforesaid, and not to suffer any on which the same is not paid to pass on any pretence.

Aug. 20. Westminster.	To the sheriff of Northumberland. Order on sight of these presents to make proclamation of the order (as above) and publish it in all cities, seaports etc. where merchants are, that all merchants may have warning thereof.

Sept. 10. Westminster.	To Nicholas Somerton escheator in Wiltesir. Order to remove the king's hand and meddle no further with two messuages, one carucate and 30 acres of land, 1½ acre of meadow, one piece of ground whereon a water mill was sometime built, and 4l. of rent in Shawe, Wytheton by Dounton and Cherleton by Dounton taken into the king's hand by death of Thomas de la Ryvere, delivering up any issues thereof taken; as the king has learned by inquisition, taken by the escheator by command of the late king, that deceased held no lands in that county in chief in his demesne as of fee, but held the premises by the courtesy after the death of Joan his wife, daughter and heir of John de Grymestede the younger and Joan his wife, of others than the king.
	The like to the same escheator concerning the manor of Grymestede, one croft therein called Southokrys excepted.

July 20. Westminster.	To John de Catesby steward of the manor of Cheylesmore, and to Simon de Notyngham the king's receiver and Richard de Hampton his feodary there. Order to deliver to the said John (sic) a water mill and pond in Cheylesmore park in Coventre taken into the late king's hand by the death of Robert Fouler the younger, and the profits thereof taken; as Edward prince of Wales to farm let the said mill and the meadows, pastures, pond, watercourse, fisheries etc. adjacent which John Moldrithe and Joan his wife took of the prince to farm and surrendered, to the said Robert and Joan his wife (yet living), their heirs and assigns, for 36 years at a yearly rent of 30s.; and the king lately ordered the steward etc. to certify in chancery whether the said Joan at any time surrendered her estate in the premises, and whether the same were taken out of her possession into the hands of the said prince or of the king or no, and if so why, when and how, who certified that she made no surrender thereof.
July 20. Westminster.	To the bailiffs of Herewyche and the keepers of the passage in that port. Order to deliver to Hugh de Calvyle captain of Calais or his attorney a galliot lately taken at sea by men of Herewyche and brought thither, the gear thereof and any property therein found at the time of capture, suffering him or his attorney to pass therewith whither he will; as it is witnessed before the council that the same belongs to the said captain.
July 28. Kennington.	To the abbess and convent of Wilton. Order at the king's nomination to admit Joan de Eketon (fn. 1) to that abbey of the foundation of the king's forefathers and of his patronage; as he is informed that by the custom of the crown it pertains to him to nominate a nun there after his coronation. July 20. Westminster.	To the abbot of St. Edmund. Licence to abide with his household in his manor of Elmeswell co. Suffolk, any proclamations or orders that lords and others should make their abode in their manors and places nearest the sea notwithstanding; as his manor of Wirlyngworth without the liberty of St. Edmund is nearest the sea of all his manors, and the way between that manor and the sea is strait, miry and difficult for speedy passage, and the manor of Elmeswell within the said liberty is but three leagues further from the sea by a way more fit to ride with a great company, and the abbot may there suddenly assemble, if need be, a much greater number of men at arms, armed men and archers as well of his retinue as of men of his abbey and town, his tenants and others dwelling within the liberty than at Wirlyngworth, and come more speedily to the sea in greater force. The king has commanded the arrayers of men at arms etc. in that county and the sheriff not to trouble the abbot by reason of the premises. By C.

Order, upon petition of Thomas de Chaunterell, Henry Launce, Adam Chaunderell, John Camer, John Dawson, John Payncher, William Gose, John Borlond, John Brand, Thomas de Lanark, Simon de Fullwell, Thomas de Cronay, Robert Gray, John de Throghford, Richard Fynche, Simon de Blakeneye, John Raymond, Simon de Gorston, Thomas de Wermouth, Roger de Blakenay, Thomas de le Seler, Richard Colman, John Wardayll, Hugh de Byker, Henry de Tychewell and Robert Turnebole seamen of that town arrested to sail on the king's service and yet under arrest in the port of London, to stay altogether while on such service the distress made upon them with other men there dwelling to abide at Newcastle, or in their absence to find other men there for safe guard of the town, releasing any distress so taken; as Michael de la Pole admiral of the fleet from the mouth of the Thames northward has certified by bill under his seal that they are all abiding in the port of London on that service. Aug. 6. Westminster.	To the arrayers of men at arms etc. in Essex. Order, upon petition of the abbess and convent of Berkyng, to suffer them to be quit of finding men this season for defence of the realm by reason of their tenure of the hundred of Bekentre with appurtenances in the manor of Westbery, Estbery, Dakenham etc. and divers other lands in Essex as parcel of the abbey founded by the king's forefathers, according to assessment now or hereafter made, this time of the king's favour releasing any distress thereupon made; as they hold the premises in almoin free of every secular service and demand, and the king is informed of a surety that by flooding of the Thames they have lost great part of the profit of their possessions at Berkyng and elsewhere in Essex, and have spent and are spending great part of their goods in repair of dikes broken, stopping (opilacionem) of trenches and thrusting back the water there, wherefore they may not bear the charge. Licence, upon petition of Arnald Gernerii licentiate in laws, nuncio and collector of the papal chamber in England, to make letters of exchange payable to him in foreign parts or in the said chamber for 4,000l. now or hereafter received by the collector, his deputy or representative, the residue of the emoluments of the said chamber in England; as although the late king granted licence to the said Augustine and Roger and to John Francisci merchant of Pistoja to make a letter of exchange up to 6,000l., the nuncio has yet sent but 2,000l.

Aug. 16. Westminster.	To the sheriff of Kent. Order, upon petition of the men and tenants of the hundreds of Midelton, Hoo, Shamele and Toltyngtrowe, not to compel them or suffer them to be compelled to guard the sea coast save where appointed and assessed by the arrayers of men at arms etc. in Kent, namely the men of the first hundred in the isle of Shepeye, the others in a place called Yentelee in the hundred of Hoo; as their petition shews that they of the hundred of Midelton, as well armed men as hobblers and archers, ought to be quit of all such guard save in the said island when need be, and they of the other hundreds used of old time to guard the coast at the said place and nowhere else, and are so appointed and assessed by the arrayers, but are being now newly compelled by the sheriff and others to keep guard elsewhere.

Aug. 7. Windsor Castle.	To the sheriff of Kent for the time being. Order to pay to Adam de Epeswyche hermit 3d. a day which for good service done to the prince his father and to the king before the said Adam was in this estate the king has granted him for his maintenance until provision shall be made him of a hermitage or other property to the value of 3d. a day for life.

Aug. 20. Westminster.	To the collectors of customs in the port of Newcastle upon Tyne. Order to cause all cockets of wool, hides and woolfells and of other merchandise which have passed out of that port since the parliament holden in 50 Edward III until now to come before the treasurer and the barons of the exchequer in the octaves of Michaelmas next.
