To the mayor of the city of Exeter for the time being. Order to pay to Master Paul de la Mounte the king's clerk, his physician, 20l. a year for life, and the arrears since 20 August last, on which date the king granted him for life 20l. a year for good service, to be taken of the fee farm of that city.

Order to suffer William Brampton of London merchant by his deputies or servants to lade in a ship in that port and, after payment of customs, subsidies etc. thereupon due, to take over to Calais ten tuns of wine of Gascony, any former command of the king to the contrary notwithstanding.

To the treasurer and the barons of the exchequer. Order to account with Ralph de Neville knight, keeper of the king's forest beyond Trent, for his receipts, for his wages and wages of the launders of the said forest, and for all other things for which by reason of his office he is bound to account from Michaelmas 14 Richard II to Michaelmas last, allowing him for himself and the launders such wages and fees as used to be allowed to other keepers and launders, and otherwise dealing as the nature of the account requires.
To the same. Order to account with Master Ralph de Selby, warden of the hall of the king's scholars of his alms maintained in the university of Cantebrigge, for his wages and the wages of the scholars, their gowns and other expenses, and for repairs of the houses whatsoever by him made, making him such allowances as they shall see ought to be made, and dealing further as the nature of the account requires.

To William Rikhille and William Brenchesley justices of assize in Dorset. Order to postpone for one year the taking of any assize of novel disseisin before them now or hereafter arraigned against Matthew de Gournay knight, now abiding on the king's service in Aquitaine (fn. 1) upon the safe guard of those parts; as the king has granted him that none shall be taken in his absence, while upon the service aforesaid. To William Herry clerk. Notice that he may pass over to foreign parts, or send another thither, for lawful and honest cause which may not tend to prejudice of the king and crown, the king's prohibition notwithstanding; as lately upon information that the said clerk was minded to pass thither in order to prosecute suits to the prejudice of the king and many of the people, the king forbade him under pain of forfeiture to depart without special licence; but brother Richard Alrede master of St. Thomas the Martyr of Acoun in the city of London and William 'Jonesson Castelle,' of Hereforde of Herefordshire have mainperned in chancery under a pain of 40l. that he shall there make no suit or attempt which may tend to contempt or prejudice of the king, or to impair the laws or ordinances of the realm, nor send any man thither for the purpose.

Order not to trouble William Beaumont for his homage, releasing any distress upon him made; as for a fine paid in the hanaper the king respited to a day past the homage of the said William, who took to wife Isabel one of the sisters and heirs of John brother and heir of Ralph son and heir of John de Welyngton knight, she being of full age, for her purparty of the lands of her said father which came to the king's hands by his death and by reason of the nonage of the said Ralph, who died within age in ward of the king, and were in the king's hand by reason of his nonage and of the idiocy of John his brother, who likewise died within age in ward of the king, commanding livery of that purparty to be given to the said William and Isabel; and the king has taken the homage of the said William, due by reason of issue between them begotten. To the mayor and sheriffs of London. Order with assent of certain merchants of Lenne to deliver to John Pape and Richard Gulcrope three thousand fish called 'halfwaxen' and a thousand called 'croplyng,' price 38l., suffering them to make their advantage thereof, although for particular causes laid before the king and council by the said merchants the king ordered the mayor and sheriffs to cause John Cousfeld merchant, an alien, when he might be found within their bailiwick, to come straightway before the king and council at a day now past in order to answer touching what should be laid before him on behalf of the king and of the said merchants and other lieges, and to put all goods and merchandise brought with him under honest keeping until further order; as the said merchants have borne true witness in chancery that, among goods so brought to the city of London and in the keeping of the mayor and sheriffs, the said fish belonged to the said John Pape and Richard, and not to John Cousfeld, and that they are not of the fellowship or allegiance of the men of Lubyke.

To the bailiffs of the town of Oxford for the time being. Writ de intendendo in favour of John de Faryngton, son of Nicholas de Faryngton of Mellynge, and order to pay him 9l. 2s. 6d. a year for life, and the arrears since Easter 19 Richard II; as by letters patent of 21 July last the king granted him for life from Easter aforesaid 6d. a day of the fee farm of that town, which amounts to 9l. 2s. 6d. a year.

To the collectors, farmers and approwers of the subsidy upon cloth for sale in Wiltesir, and other the king's officers or ministers whatsoever who shall receive the said subsidy for the time being. Order to pay to John de Roche the king's knight 100 marks a year, and the arrears since Easter 17 Richard II; as by letters patent of 8 July last for good service the king granted him for life 100 marks a year of the said subsidy from Easter aforesaid.

To the chief butler for the time being. Order to deliver to the said Robert one tun of wine a year of the king's prise in the port of Suthampton which the king has granted him for life.

To the collectors of the customs and subsidies upon wool, hides and woolfells in the port of London. Order to take of merchants whatsoever, native and alien, before they export wool etc. from that port, security for which the collectors will answer at their peril that they shall bring to the king's bullion one ounce of gold of foreign coinage for every sack of wool, every half last of hides, and every 240 fells, certifying the warden and master of the king's mint in the Tower of London from time to time of the security so taken, the merchants' names, and the number of sacks etc. exported; as in the last parlia to suffer him to lade in a ship of Richard Elys of London in that port called 'la George' and, first paying the customs, subsidies etc. thereupon due, to take over to Calais thirty tuns of wine, any former command of the king to the contrary notwithstanding; as John Hadlegh citizen of London has mainperned for him in chancery that he shall take the same to Calais and nowhere else, and shall within half a year bring into chancery letters under seal of the captain or treasurer of Calais witnessing the unlading thereof.

To the sheriff of Bukingham. Order to levy of the men of Great Merlawe all moneys pertaining to the king for the escapes of William Gobyoun and Lawrence Coun felons out of the town prison, and deliver them to Thomas Mewe the king's serjeant, one of the yeomen of his chamber, to whom the king lately granted the same of his gift; as it is after found by inquisition, taken before John Longevylle the escheator, that the prisoners were by the constables and other ministers of the town taken for felony and put in prison there, namely in the town stocks, but for lack of good guarding of the whole town broke prison and escaped to the church thereof, and there acknowledged before John atte Brooke one of the county coroners that they are thieves and have committed divers felonies, for which they abjured the realm, and so the town is bound to answer for their escape.

To the collectors of the custom upon wool, hides and woolfells in the port of Great Jernemuth for the time being. Order of the custom of that subsidy to pay every year to John Hacon 6d. a day, and to pay him the arrears since 16 July 15 Richard II, on which date at the prayer of John duke of Aquitaine and Lancastre the king granted him for life 6d. a day thereof.

To the collectors of customs in the port of Sandewich and the keepers of the passage in that port. Order to take of Michael Scotte of Calais security that he shall take the same to Calais and nowhere else under pain of forfeiture thereof. and to suffer him in the port of Sandewich to lade in a ship 24 tuns of wine of la Rochelle and 4 butts of 'Malvesye' and, first paying the customs, subsidies etc. thereupon due, to take them to Calais, any former command of the king to the contrary notwithstanding, certifying under their seals in chancery the security so taken.

To the escheator in Kent. Order to deliver in dower to Anne who was wife of Thomas late earl of Stafford a third part of Tonebrugge castle and the members thereof, namely the manors of Dacheherst and Hadelo, which the king has assigned to her with assent of Thomas duke of Gloucestre, to whom he has granted the ward of all the earl's lands until the lawful age of William his brother and heir, and assent of William archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas earl of Warrewyk, Nicholas de Stafford knight and Nicholas Bradshawe friends of the heir, and of John de Burton, Thomas de Feriby clerks and William Naffreton guardians of the said Anne who is within age, having granted her licence to marry whom she shall please, and deliver the issues thereof taken since the earl's death, which the king has granted her, assigning to her also the manor of Thornbury with the members, namely Oldebury, Kyngton, Morton, Falefeld, Mars and Oldelond, that manor and the members being extended at 99l. 16s. 1d. a year, a court at Thornbury called the court of the fees of the honour of Gloucestre at 10s., a yearly rent of 10s. in the town of Gloucestre, a court there every three weeks extended at 6s. 8d., and the manor of Rendecombe with certain tenements in Sarney at 104s. 8d., all in Gloucestershire, the manor of Desenynge at 25l. 18s., 14 acres of land in Gayesle at 4s. 8d., and the manor of Haverhill called 'Castel' at 103s. 6d. in Suffolk, the manor of Welles at 14l. 5s. 9d. and certain lands in Wyveton at 50s. 6d. in Norffolk, the manors of Castle Aungre (ad Castrum) at 6l. 5s. 8d. and Horsham in Haverhill at 4l. 17s. in Essex, of Tyso at 26l. 16s. 8d. and a yearly rent of 4l. in Waweyneswotton in Warwickshire, a yearly quit rent of 101s. 4d. issuing from certain tenements in London, the manor of Esyngton at 73s. 4d., a yearly rent of 13s. 4d. issuing from the manor of Ludgarshale, and another of 2s. from the manor of Blecchele in Bukinghamshire, the manor of Burbache co. Wiltesir at 100s., parcel of the hamlet of Upclatford at 106s. 8d., the borough of Petresfelde with a market and two fairs there at 6l. 10s., the hamlets of Mapuldurham, Weston, Nutstede and Shete at 7l. 3s. 4d. and the manor of Cornhampton at 106s. 8d. in the county of Suthampton, the manor of Glapthorn co. Norhampton extended at 7l. 10s. a year over and above the third part and rent aforesaid, and a yearly rent of 4l. 18s. 10¾d. issuing from the manor of Rothewelle co. Norhampton.
To Robert Whityngton escheator in Gloucestershire. Order to give the said Anne livery of the manor of Thornbury with the members (above mentioned), the (said) court there, the rent in Gloucestre and the court there, and the manor of Rendecombe with tenements in Sarney, extended severally (as above).
To Simon Baret escheator in Norffolk and Suffolk. Like order, mutatis mutandis, concerning the manor of Desenynge, the (said) land in Gayesle, the manor of Haverhill called 'Castel' in Suffolk, the manor of Welles and lands in Wyveton co. Norfolk, extended (as above).
To William Gildriche escheator in Essex. Like order, mutatis mutandis, concerning the manors of Castle Aungre and of Horsham in Haverhill extended (as above). the janitor 3d. a day, of a groom under him 1½d., the janitor and groom having the keeping of the warren, for wages of the artiller 6d. a day, and of the watchman 3d. a day by the hands of the said Roger and John, to be taken of the extent of the castle, town and forest so far as that will go, and the residue over and above such extent of the issues of the county of Suthampton by the sheriff's hands; and the castle etc. are extended at 10l. 11s. 7½d. a year, as appears by certificate of the treasurer and the barons of the exchequer sent into chancery by command of the king.

To the justice of Ireland for the time being, and to his representative there. Order, upon the instant petition of the prior of Bath, if he has no lands, rents, possessions, benefices or offices in Ireland save a certain priory and lands etc. thereto belonging, and if he shall find a prior therein, and other fencible men there and upon the lands etc. thereto belonging in proportion to the quantity and value thereof for support of the charges incumbent upon the same, not to trouble him for his absence, or to send thither other fencible men, by colour of the ordinance made in parliament at Westminster in 3 Richard II, and order to release any distress upon him made; as thereby it was ordered that all men of whatsoever estate or condition having lands etc. in Ireland whatsoever should before Midsummer then next draw thither and thenceforward dwell there to aid and reinforce the king's lieges in those parts and defend Ireland against the rebel Irish, and that in case any should be absent after that date, he should be bound under a pain in the ordinance contained to bring and find there fencible men in his room as need should demand, respect being had to the quantity and value of his lands etc.; and now the complaint of the prior shews that he dwells continually in his priory upon the cure and governance thereof, so that without detriment to the same he may not come in person to Ireland, but must needs be absent for reasonable cause, and that the justice etc. are minded to trouble him for absence, although he has no lands etc. in Ireland save the priory and lands above mentioned, and although he is finding a prior and other men as aforesaid to bear the said charges.

To the guardians of the peace and justices of oyer and terminer in the county of Suthampton, and to the sheriff. Order from time to time, when by the abbots of Waverley and Rewley required, to remove and abolish all lieges of the county who are gathered within the abbey of Bewley Regis in order to hold the same with the strong hand, and hinder the said abbots from dealing as they are bound to do by virtue of the power hereinafter mentioned; as the king is informed that great number of such lieges have heretofore gathered at divers times and are now gathered within the said abbey, which is of the foundation of former kings and of the king's patronage, spending the goods thereof, and holding the same as aforesaid, so that William abbot of Waverley and John abbot of Rewley, both of the Cistercian order, who are deputed to institute, create and provide an abbot of Bewley it is said according to ancient statutes and the customs of the order, dare not for their lives repair thither to deal as by virtue of that power they are bound to do for the glory of God, the increase of his worship and the safety of the said goods, in breach of the peace, to the ruin it is like of the abbey, and the scandal of the whole order; and the king's will is that the divine services which used to be there performed for the health of the king and the souls of his forefathers be not by such unlawful assemblies withdrawn, nor the said abbots hindered as aforesaid; and order to the pretended abbot of Bewley, all the monks, their servants, and other the king's lieges whatsoever to be obedient to the justices and sheriff in executing the premises, as meet it is.

To the steward and marshal of the household, or the steward's representative. Order by mainprise of Thomas Bowet of Cumberland, John Lynton of Yorkshire, Richard Hampton of Herefordshire and Richard Barbour of Middlesex to set free Nicholas de Wynyngton, arrested by order of the steward and marshal, and imprisoned in the marshalsea prison at suit of John Green and Stephen Wilkyn averring threats.
To the collectors of the subsidy of 3s. upon every tun of wine in the port of Hull. Order without taking custom or subsidy to suffer fifteen tuns one pipe of red wine of Gascony, bought and purveyed in Gascony by servants of Edmund duke of York for consumption of his household and brought to that port, to be carried to the duke's use, any former command of the king to the contrary notwithstanding.

To the mayor and bailiffs of Suthampton, and the keepers of the passage in that port. Order to cause a ship for the passage of John Perant serjeant at arms, John Selby, Henry Ryder and others in their company, who by command of the king are sailing to the islands of Jeresey, Gernesey, Serke and Aurney for furtherance and execution of certain business there, to be purveyed for their money, delivering the same to them or one of them.

To Alan de Kirketon escheator in Bukinghamshire. Order in presence of the next friends of Richard son and heir of Henry Grey of Wilton knight, a minor in ward of the king, or of their attorneys, to assign dower to Elizabeth who was the said Henry's wife, of whom the king has taken an oath etc.

To the escheator in Berkshire. Order to give William de Monte Acuto earl of Salisbury, who is of full age, seisin of a third part of a toft, one carucate of land, 12 acres of wood, pasture for 200 sheep and 100s. of rent in Chepynglambourne held of others than the king; as the king has learned by inquisition, taken by Reynold Sheffelde late escheator, that Margaret who was wife of Thomas Graunsoun at her death held that third part in dower by endowment of her husband and assignment of the said earl, with reversion to the earl and his heirs.
